Chapter 16 - Chapter 16 – A Rival in the Library

Logan believed his current magical reserves already satisfied the basic requirements for learning the Shield Charm.

As for talent and comprehension—

Those were hardly problems under Sage Mode.

He did not expect to master the spell instantly, but merely learning the fundamentals should not prove difficult.

More importantly, Protego possessed direct relevance to the forbidden spell he intended to create later.

In fact, barring unexpected complications, that future spell would likely become Logan's first true defensive forbidden spell.

Unfortunately, there was one small issue.

According to the original story, the Shield Charm only appeared much later during higher-level lessons and the Triwizard Tournament period.

Meaning first-year students technically should not even encounter this spell yet.

So the real problem became:

How exactly was he supposed to locate advanced spellbooks without attracting suspicion?

After thinking briefly, Logan walked directly toward Madam Pince at the library desk.

The librarian looked up sharply from her paperwork as he approached.

Logan politely explained what he needed.

After hearing the request, Madam Pince stared at him strangely for several seconds.

"The Shield Charm is located within the upper-year spell section," she said slowly.

"If you insist, I can retrieve the material for you."

Then her expression became slightly more complicated.

"However, Mr Anderson, don't you think you are rushing yourself somewhat?"

Logan remained silent.

Madam Pince continued calmly:

"You are a first-year student who has barely arrived at Hogwarts. Even if you discovered the name of the Shield Charm somewhere, your current focus should probably remain elsewhere."

She folded her hands together.

"I have worked in this library for many years. I've watched countless talented young wizards attempt magic beyond their level."

"Most of them eventually collide with reality rather painfully."

Despite her warning, Madam Pince still rose from her seat and disappeared briefly between the shelves.

Several minutes later, she returned carrying a thick spellbook regarding advanced defensive charms and handed it directly to Logan.

The moment Logan accepted the book, his eyes lit up immediately.

Excellent.

Then he asked politely:

"And where can I find books regarding Transfiguration theory?"

Madam Pince stared at him again.

This child wanted advanced defensive charms and Transfiguration research simultaneously?

Did he think he was Merlin reborn?

Still, she merely pointed toward another distant section without commenting further.

Watching Logan leave, Madam Pince sighed inwardly.

Ambitious.

Far too ambitious.

Even older students required considerable effort merely to understand the basics of the Shield Charm.

Yet this first-year wanted to study advanced defensive magic while simultaneously researching Transfiguration.

Honestly, modern students became stranger every year.

....

Logan soon arrived before another massive shelf section.

His eyes immediately brightened.

Titles stretched endlessly across the shelves:

Advanced Magical Theory.

Practical Potion Enhancement Techniques.

Counter-Curse Fundamentals.

A Comprehensive Study of Defensive Magic.

The Legendary Life of Gilderoy Lockhart.

The Secret Relationship Between Dumbledore and Grindelwald.

Logan paused briefly.

Something extremely suspicious had clearly infiltrated these shelves.

Still, he ignored the nonsense instantly and began collecting every useful Transfiguration-related book he could find.

His plan was simple.

Attend classes.

Sleep occasionally.

Spend every remaining moment inside the library.

Honestly, perfect lifestyle.

Just as Logan prepared to carry the books toward a study table—

BANG.

He collided directly with someone turning the corner.

"Ow—!"

Logan immediately sat down hard on the floor while rubbing his forehead painfully.

"What kind of iron wall is that?"

A familiar irritated voice answered instantly.

"Hmph. Of course it's you."

Logan looked up.

Hermione Granger stood opposite him with an annoyed expression while clutching several books against her chest.

"I should've guessed the person carrying half the library around would be you."

Logan blinked several times before realising the situation.

Honestly, this encounter made complete sense.

At the beginning of term, almost nobody voluntarily visited the library besides Hermione.

Still…

Logan felt deeply confused about one thing.

Why did Hermione seem completely unaffected by their collision?

Did she secretly train Iron Head Kung Fu at Shaolin Temple before arriving at Hogwarts?

Was she actually cultivating both martial arts and magic simultaneously?

Terrifying.

Logan immediately decided he did not wish to provoke her further.

"I'm sorry, Hermione," he said sincerely. "I genuinely didn't notice you."

Unfortunately, reasoning with girls often produced highly questionable results.

Hermione interpreted his apology entirely differently.

Didn't notice her?

So now Logan Anderson believed he could ignore her completely simply because he was talented, handsome, academically superior, and capable of wandless casting?

Outrageous.

Hermione silently swore vengeance internally.

One day she would surpass him completely.

"Hmph."

Without another word, Hermione brushed past him and walked toward the bookshelves.

Logan watched her leave with visible confusion.

He already apologised.

Why was she still angry?

Girls truly were mysterious creatures.

Shaking his head helplessly, Logan finally carried his books toward a quiet study table before opening the Shield Charm text eagerly.

[Ding.]

[Sage Mode Activated.]

[Learning Efficiency Greatly Increased.]

[Comprehension and Analytical Ability Enhanced.]

Instantly, Logan immersed himself completely within the sea of magical theory.

Meanwhile—

Not far away—

Hermione secretly peeked toward him from behind another shelf.

Originally, she had merely finished gathering the books she personally needed.

But after noticing Logan already studying seriously at a nearby table, an inexplicable thought suddenly appeared inside her mind.

What exactly is he reading?

Naturally, Hermione immediately justified her curiosity.

This was perfectly reasonable.

They were classmates.

Checking what books another excellent student studied was entirely normal.

Yes.

Completely normal.

Thus, Hermione quietly approached from behind.

Fortunately for her, Logan remained entirely absorbed in Sage Mode and failed to notice her sneaking closer.

Carefully, Hermione leaned slightly sideways and looked down toward the open books through Logan's profile.

Then she froze briefly.

Sunlight streamed through the library windows onto Logan's face, illuminating his calm expression softly. Combined with the quiet atmosphere of the library, the entire scene looked strangely peaceful.

For several seconds, Hermione simply stared blankly at his profile.

Then—

Her cheeks suddenly turned bright red.

What are you doing, Hermione Granger?!

This is not the time to admire somebody's face!

He's your rival!

Snapping herself awake mentally, Hermione immediately forced her attention downward toward the books Logan was studying instead.
