Luke was paralyzed, locked in a vice grip of absolute, primordial terror. He could feel the entity approaching from the deep dark behind him, a presence so crushing that it defied the very laws of reality. His muscles refused to obey him, frozen in place. All he could do was hold his breath, a desperate prayer echoing in his mind that he would be bypassed, left untouched by whatever nightmare had manifested.
Then, the being who had spoke, rested it's hand upon his shoulder.
The moment physical contact was made, the mental lock shattered. The ice in his veins receded just enough for him to jerk his head backward, turning to face the source of the pressure.
It was August.
Not the young, shifting boy who had violently invaded his mind and left him reeling, but the stern, indifferent patriarch he had grown to know within the cold walls of reality. Yet, seeing him up close inside this space, stripped of mortal limitations, Luke's breath hitched. August looked less like a man and more like a mythic god carved from ancient marble. His eyes blazed with a brilliant, blinding golden light, casting an overbearing, god-like atmosphere that bore down on Luke's soul like an anvil.
*Is this the man I swore to surpass?*
The thought crashed against Luke's mind, heavy and nauseating. He had witnessed Cerci and Zayne unleash their power; even while heavily suppressing their true might, the sheer devastation they could cause was terrifying. They were widely regarded as the unreachable pinnacle of human strength. But standing here, Luke realized their apex was nothing more than a foothill compared to August. This man casually exuded an overbearing, crushing pressure that even Cerci and Zayne would likely buckle beneath.
Who was he? Was this entity even a mortal being?
August stared down at him, his gaze piercing straight through the layers of Luke's consciousness, sending shivers cascading down his spine.
"So you were the one all along. Watching me through Kaiser's eyes," August murmured, letting out a soft, low chuckle. A fleeting, wistful expression crossed the patriarch's impossibly composed features—gone in a fraction of a second, leaving only a bottomless void.
Reading the frantic storm of thoughts crashing behind Luke's wide eyes, August answered the unvoiced question. "If you're wondering, I brought you to my soul world to save your life." He paused, letting the crushing gravity of his words sink into Luke's core. "Had I not intervened, you and your bond would have been obliterated. It would have been difficult, but since our minds had already been linked, I was able to pull you out just in time."
August withdrew his hand from Luke's shoulder, shifting his index and thumb to press firmly against Luke's forehead.
"Didn't Zayne tell you not to mess with forces you don't understand?"
As August lifted his hand, speech violently returned to Luke. He gasped, choking out the words as he fought against the invisible weight crushing his windpipe. "I... I have to go save my bird."
"Your bird's alright... for now, at least," August assured him calmly, though the dispassionate tone did nothing to alleviate the frantic panic tearing at Luke's chest. "Since you are so eager to run to your death, then fine. Do as you wish. I'm going to sever our link the moment you leave, but I'll grant you a parting gift."
High above them, the colossal, burning eye in the sky twitched.
"Instilled in your memory is an ancient library filled with lost texts on runic sorcery. Go to the coordinates you will see there."
The space beneath Luke's feet began to fracture, dissolving into gray mist as the edges of his consciousness frayed, dragging him toward the abyss of forced unconsciousness.
"Try not to cast any runic spells just yet," was the last thing August's voice whispered into his fading mind.
When Luke's eyes violently snapped open, reality rushed back in—and with it, a blinding, incandescent rage.
Before him, Ignis was broken. The magnificent phoenix lay battered, bleeding, and utterly helpless, being strangled to death by three massive, slick tentacles that coiled tightly around her throat. Surrounding her, the remaining five tentacles lashed through the air with breakneck, lethal speed, preparing to deliver the final, executioner's blow before she could ever draw breath again.
*Crack.*
Seconds before impact, Luke exploded forward, a streak of desperate motion. He materialized beside his bond, his hands carving through the air with a razor-sharp edge that instantly severed two of the crushing tentacles.
The remaining appendages recoiled backward in screeching pain. From the center of the carnage, the maddened, abyssal eyes of the leviathan fixed entirely on Luke, burning with a primal, bloodthirsty rage.
"What have you gotten yourself into now?" Luke muttered, his voice dropping into a cold, matter-of-fact register that left no room for hesitation, even as his chest heaved. "You have a lot of explaining to do later. For now... get back into my core and focus on healing."
Ignis refused to meet his gaze, her pride shattered as she dissolved into a flash of light, retreating deep into the safety of his core.
Luke stood alone, slowly turning his full, terrifying attention toward the leviathan.
When he spoke, his voice wasn't loud; it was flat, seething with a dark, suffocating bloodlust that turned the surrounding air to ice. The ambient mana didn't just gather—it condensed into a crushing weight, and the winds abruptly shifted, screaming with a ferocity far surpassing anything that came before.
With a low hum of displaced air, a blade of pure destruction wove itself into Luke's outstretched palm. The fabric of his robes violently tore away, reshaping themselves into an intricate, combat-ready armor.
His golden hair bled of all color, transforming into a ghostly, spectral white tipped with vibrant emerald green. His eyes glowed a blinding, toxic emerald. Etched across his bare arms and face, ancient, glowing runes burned into his flesh, bleeding raw power.
Beneath them, the dark waters of the lake suddenly began to boil, churning violently as a thick, scalding steam hissed into the freezing air.
"How dare you..." Luke whispered, his voice echoing with the absolute finality of a death sentence as the world around them ground to a complete, unnatural halt for a single, terrifying fraction of a second. "...lay a finger on what belongs to me."
Then, mayhem descended.
