Chapter 40 - THE ASCENT OF AN 8TH-CIRCLE

Kyle impaled himself directly upon the razor-sharp mandibles, welcoming the agonizing bite of the beast not out of despair, but as a calculated gamble. He knew with absolute, chilling certainty that he could never bridge the gap to strike the Nightmare directly while a sea of thralls shielded its body. This was the terrifying reality of facing a true Nightmare—a creature of nightmare domains that mocked mortal limitations.

He gritted his teeth, his jaw locking so hard he nearly cracked his molars as he absorbed the dual torment of physical impalement and the insidious whispers of corruption eating away at the edges of his consciousness. At first, the contamination was no more than a distant, seductive hiss in the back of his mind, but now it swelled into a deafening, eerie chorus, commanding him to yield, to embrace the rot and surrender his soul.

With veins bulging, he forced his bloodshot eyes wide open, glaring up with a menacing, defiant fury at the towering monstrosity.

Lifting a trembling hand, he brought Azula's sword crashing down against the creature's impenetrable exoskeleton. Not even a single scratch marred its surface. Again and again, he hammered the blade down in a frenzy of desperate strikes, and again and again, nothing happened. The thick, chitinous armor treated his assault like falling rain. Down below, the swarming ghouls finally began to register the intrusion, their hollow eyes locking onto him as they realized what he was trying to achieve.

*Damn it.*

His plan had failed. He was standing on the precipice of a gruesome, agonizing death, destined to become just another carcass picked clean in this sunless wasteland.

*No.*

A fierce, desperate refusal surged from the depths of his core. He would not die here. Locking eyes with the colossal beast hovering above him, a mad, brilliant idea sparked in the dark corners of his mind. His unique blood—defiant and potent—held the intrinsic property to purge toxins, neutralize corruption, and slowly heal his own flesh given enough time.

Without a shred of hesitation, Kyle released his grip on the sword, letting it clatter away, and drove both of his bare hands straight into the weeping, unprotected sockets of the scorpion's eyes.

Instantly, the creature's acidic blood detonated across his skin, eating away at his flesh in a sizzling wave of blistering agony. He ignored the melting skin, enduring the hellfire as he waited for the precise moment his own anomalous blood mixed and surged deep into the internal pathways of the Nightmare.

Gathering every last, microscopic drop of mana he had left, he forced it past his core, funneling the raw, volatile energy directly into the beast's vitals, and screamed as he ignited the internal inferno, setting the monster's insides ablaze.

The Nightmare shrieked—a soul-rending, ear-splitting sound of pure agony as it realized the parasite within was tearing its organs to ash. Sensing their master's mortal peril, the horde of thralls instantly went berserk, scrambling up the gargantuan carapace in a frenzied wave of claws and teeth to eliminate the threat.

Kyle doubled his efforts, pouring fuel onto the fire burning deep within the beast.

As the seconds dragged into an eternity, a creeping, suffocating doubt clawed at his chest. *Will this actually work? Is my mana enough to burn a creature of this magnitude, or am I just accelerating my own execution?*

The Nightmare was on its final breath, thrashing in its death throes. Did he possess the remaining strength to deliver the final push needed to plunge the abomination deep into the abyss of the afterlife, or would he perish first, his broken body hijacked to become just another mindless thrall?

A Dust Crusher was the first to breach his defense, driving its massive, jagged claws deep into Kyle's side. The protective mana coat he desperately tried to maintain offered zero resistance against the sheer kinetic mass, tearing through his flesh like wet paper. Another Dust Crusher lunged, bringing its massive fangs down to crush his shoulder.

By then, Kyle realized the sheer futility of wasting what little focus he had left on defense. More ghouls piled on, tearing into his flesh. Yet, despite his body being reduced to a butcher's canvas of ghastly, bleeding wounds, his iron will refused to buckle, stubbornly driving him to see his gamble through to the absolute end.

The staggering amount of blood loss began to drag him toward the velvet abyss of unconsciousness. He fought against the encroaching darkness with every ounce of his remaining soul, fully aware that if he closed his eyes now, it would spell his final, irreversible end.

Channeling every shred of mana, every drop of willpower, every memory of his training, he dialed the internal fire to its absolute maximum. He wasn't the only one suffering in this mutual destruction. He could feel it through the visceral link of his blood—the monster shrieked in unadulterated torment as Kyle's toxic, burning blood ravaged its core.

A dark, blood-stained smirk cracked across Kyle's pale lips. *"Now... let's see who burns in hell first."*

Before the thought could even finish echoing in his mind, the ground violently erupted. A massive sandworm shot upward from the subterranean dark, snapping its colossal maw shut around Kyle's legs and violently dragging him down toward the crushing earth.

He screamed, a raw, throat-tearing sound as he felt his muscles stretching and tearing under the monstrous torque. *"To hell with all of you!"*

With a final, catastrophic spike of mana, the Nightmare's carapace turned blindingly white, glowing with a fierce, unstable intensity before violently swallowing the cavern in a sphere of pure, incandescent light.

*BOOM.*

Chunks of smoking, charred flesh flew in every imaginable direction. The catastrophic shockwave caught Kyle mid-drag, slamming his battered body violently into the jagged stone wall of the cave entrance. Gasping for air, he staggered back to his feet, leaning heavily against the cold rock as he caught hold of something with his charred, burnt hand. He wrenched a broken, blood-soaked mandible out of his torso with a wet tearing sound.

Across the cavern, the surviving ghouls shuddered, their glowing eyes dimming as they dropped dead one by one, robbed of the hive-mind connection now that the Nightmare was well and truly slain.

The cavern spun wildly on its axis. His vision fragmented into blurred, watercolor strokes of gray and crimson. Letting out a long, ragged sigh that rattled in his blood-filled lungs, his knees finally gave out.

"Looks like a god can die after all..."

The cavern dissolved into an absolute, suffocating blackout. As the edges of his consciousness frayed and he drifted helplessly toward the velvet abyss of unconsciousness, a sudden, foreign warmth bloomed from deep within his core.

It wasn't the searing, agonizing heat of the battle, but a deep, resonant furnace of raw, unclaimed energy. The residual mana of the slain Nightmare—harvested and filtered through the brutal exchange of their blood—surged violently into him, flooding his depleted channels like an unstoppable tide.

The roaring torrent of energy coalesced, spinning tighter and tighter within his soul until it shattered a long-standing barrier. With a silent, seismic shockwave that echoed only within his spirit, the condensed mana locked into place, forging his **8th circle** and violently elevating him to the terrifying rank of an 8th-circle mage, even as darkness finally claimed him.
