He had cleared the Trial of Doubt. Or Doubt and Ignorance, if he wanted to be honest about what had actually happened. Before that had been Endurance. Before that, Pain. The Tower seemed to enjoy naming misery as if giving it a title made it educational. Which meant the last Trial of Penance should be the final one.
Kael exhaled and rolled his shoulders, feeling several joints pop in protest. "Great," he muttered. "Because more penance sounds pleasant."
The white chamber remained silent. There was a door in front of him, plain and clean, nothing like the dark room he had crawled through by touch to find an exit. It looked almost merciful, which immediately made him distrust it. Still, standing around would not improve anything, and the Tower had never once rewarded hesitation with kindness.
A new notification appeared.

Kael's eyes narrowed.
