Chapter 287 - Risk and Reward

Kael ducked beneath the bent iron bars and entered the sewer.

The first few steps took him down a sloped passage of old stone, slick in patches and cracked in others. The tunnel was wide enough that three people could have walked through it side by side, though Kael doubted anyone sane would have wanted to. The walls were damp, but not with water that moved. Moisture clung to them in black stains, thick and old, collecting between the stone blocks like rot that had forgotten how to smell properly. There was no proper sewer stench, no flood of waste, no running channel of filth beneath his feet. That made the place worse. A sewer without sewage felt like a throat without breath.
