Chapter 689 - Field Domination

The rhythm of the war changed definitively in the following days. There was no longer that expectation of an immediate large-scale confrontation, nor the constant weight of a massive attack coming from a single direction. Instead, the entire field had turned into a zone of control, where every movement was calculated and every response had to be precise.

I could feel it in every step.

We positioned ourselves on higher ground early in the morning, with a wide view of the surrounding terrain. The map was no longer just a guide—it was a living representation of what was happening. Points appeared and disappeared constantly as demon groups emerged and were eliminated.

"Two more groups to the west," Vespera said, looking into the distance.

Lyannis nodded. "Small, but close to each other."

Scarlett crossed her arms. "If they merge, they become a problem."

"Then they won't merge," I replied.

Elara looked at me. "You want to intercept before that."

"Yes."

Liriel added, "Fast movement, no room for gaps."

Rai'kanna simply nodded. "Then let's go."

The split was immediate. Scarlett took part of the adventurers toward one of the points, while Lyannis and Vespera advanced toward the other. I remained on the central line with Rai'kanna, ready to intervene if necessary.

The first group was eliminated quickly. There was no significant resistance. The second tried to retreat upon noticing our approach, but they did not have time.

Lyannis appeared first, cutting off their escape route, while Vespera emerged from behind, eliminating the remaining ones before they could react.

"Clear," Vespera said upon returning.

I nodded.

We continued with the same pattern throughout the day. Small clusters appeared, were identified, and eliminated before they could grow. There was no room for error. None of those hordes were allowed to gain enough form to become a real threat.

Scarlett led her wing with precision, keeping the adventurers organized and efficient. Every order she gave was direct, with no room for doubt.

"Advance. Right flank. Don't let them escape."

The movements followed her rhythm, and that made a difference.

Elara and Liriel maintained constant support. Barriers appeared at the right moments, attacks were blocked before becoming dangerous, and energy control prevented any buildup of miasma in the most affected areas.

"Be more careful on the left," Elara said at one point, adjusting the defense before the attack even arrived.

Liriel followed suit, purifying the terrain whenever necessary, preventing demonic influence from spreading.

Rai'kanna stayed with me most of the time, joining battles when needed. Her movements were direct, efficient, always focused on quickly eliminating any major threat.

"They're trying to buy time," she said during one of the pauses.

"Yes," I replied.

"For what?"

I thought for a moment.

"For something bigger."

The day went on, and the pattern repeated itself. Quick battles, clean victories, no significant enemy progress. The sense of control was clear.

But that was not victory.

It was domination.

At one point, a larger group appeared to the north, around a hundred demons. Unlike the previous ones, they attempted to form a defensive line, as if trying to hold position.

"Now that's new," Lyannis said.

Vespera nodded. "An attempt at containment."

Scarlett was already moving. "Then we'll break it."

I did not need to intervene directly. I observed the group's movement.

Scarlett led the frontal advance, while Lyannis and Vespera flanked from the sides. Elara opened a path with precise magic, breaking the initial formation, and Liriel maintained active protection.

Rai'kanna entered at the right moment, breaking the center of the enemy line.

The group had no chance.

Within minutes, everything was over.

"That was… efficient," Lyannis commented.

"Coordination," Vespera said.

Scarlett simply looked at the empty field. "They're trying to learn… but so are we."

I nodded.

That was exactly it.

The control we had at that moment did not come only from individual strength, but from how we were operating together.

Every movement was connected.

Every action had a response.

And that made all the difference.

When the sun began to set, the number of encounters decreased again. The pattern held. Activity during the day, silence at dusk.

We gathered once more on elevated ground, observing the field that now looked almost empty.

"Another day without losses," Liriel said.

"Yes," I replied.

Elara crossed her arms. "This is no longer just an advantage."

"It's superiority," Lyannis said.

Vespera nodded. "Total area domination."

Scarlett looked at me. "And now?"

I thought for a moment.

"We maintain."

Rai'kanna added, "Without advancing beyond necessity."

"Exactly."

The group fell silent for a few seconds, absorbing the situation.

It was strange.

We were winning.

Without real difficulty.

Without losses.

Without direct pressure.

But this… did not feel like the end.

I took a deep breath, keeping my eyes on the horizon.

"This isn't everything," I said.

Scarlett nodded slightly. "I think so too."

Elara added, "It's too easy."

Liriel kept her eyes fixed ahead. "And that's never a good sign."

Lyannis gave a faint smile, but without humor. "Then let's enjoy it while it lasts."

Vespera concluded. "Because it won't last."

Rai'kanna said nothing, only kept her gaze fixed on the horizon.

Night began to fall once again, covering the field in long shadows and a heavy silence.

But this time… the silence was not empty.

It was loaded.

Loaded with expectation.

With preparation.

With something that had not yet shown its form.

I closed my eyes for a brief moment.

Then opened them again.

If this was domination…

Then the enemy's next move would be to break it.

And when that happened…

The war would stop being controlled.

And it would become real.
