Chapter 688 - Hunting Demons

The following days stopped being marked by major single confrontations and began to turn into a continuous sequence of movements and small battles. The silence in the south still remained, but in the north and the intermediate regions, scattered pockets of demons began to appear, as if the enemy army had fragmented itself on purpose.

I did not see that as disorganization.

It was adjustment.

Early in the morning, we gathered the main group to define the day's actions. The map was spread out over an improvised table, secured with small stones so it would not move with the wind.

"The sightings have increased," Vespera said, pointing to several marked locations. "But they remain separated."

Lyannis crossed her arms. "Small hordes, twenty, thirty, sometimes fifty."

Scarlett carefully analyzed the marked points. "If we let this grow, it becomes a problem."

"Exactly," I replied. "That's why we're going to eliminate them before they can regroup."

Elara tilted her head slightly. "Split into teams?"

"Yes."

Liriel looked at me. "With magical support?"

"Constantly."

Rai'kanna remained silent for a few seconds before speaking. "No deep advances."

"No advances," I confirmed. "The idea is control, not pursuit."

The group nodded.

The division was made naturally. Scarlett took charge of one wing with some of the more experienced adventurers. Lyannis and Vespera were assigned reconnaissance and the rapid elimination of smaller groups. Elara and Liriel provided direct support, maintaining protection and energy control. Rai'kanna remained with me on the main line.

We moved out immediately afterward.

The first contact came quickly. A group of just over thirty demons was advancing through an open area without any defined formation. There was no need for a complex strategy.

"I'll handle it," Lyannis said, already moving before she had even finished speaking.

Vespera disappeared right after.

The two advanced with precision. Quick movements, clean strikes, no hesitation. Within moments, the entire group had been eliminated.

"Clear," Vespera said upon returning.

I nodded.

We continued.

The pattern repeated itself. Small groups appeared from different directions, always separated, always moving. There was no attempt at a direct attack, only a constant presence.

Scarlett encountered the second group with her team. Around forty demons, slightly more resilient. She did not retreat.

"Advance," she said firmly.

The battle was direct but organized. The adventurers followed her pace, while Elara reinforced their defense with precise magic, blocking attacks and creating openings for counterattacks.

"Right side!" Elara shouted at one point, creating a barrier that stopped an unexpected advance.

Scarlett took advantage of the opening and finished off the remaining group.

When we regrouped, she simply commented, "Nothing out of the ordinary."

"But more coordinated already," Liriel said.

"Yes," Scarlett confirmed.

We moved on once again.

The third encounter came differently. A smaller group, but with denser creatures whose resilience was above average.

Rai'kanna was the first to advance.

Her movements were direct, without waste. Every strike carried precision and strength, eliminating targets efficiently. There was no need for words.

I followed the advance, ensuring none escaped.

When it was over, silence quickly returned.

"They're varying their approach," Rai'kanna said.

"Yes," I replied. "Testing."

The day progressed like that. Constant movement, quick battles, no long breaks. With every confrontation, the pattern became clearer.

They were not trying to win.

They were trying to understand.

During a brief stop, the group gathered again.

Lyannis ran a hand through her hair, slightly tired but still energetic. "We've already lost count of how many groups."

"More than ten," Vespera said.

Scarlett crossed her arms. "And not a single direct advance."

Elara looked at me. "This isn't an offensive."

"No," I replied. "It's active observation."

Liriel kept her eyes fixed on the map. "They're measuring our response."

Rai'kanna added, "And our limits."

I remained silent for a few seconds.

"Then we're not going to show everything," I said.

Scarlett slightly raised an eyebrow. "You've already shown quite a lot."

"Not everything."

Lyannis smiled faintly. "Now that's interesting."

Vespera nodded. "Controlled exposure."

Elara agreed. "That prevents rapid adaptation."

Liriel added, "And preserves our advantage."

The group nodded.

We moved out again, but this time with an adjustment. We reduced the amount of force used in some encounters, maintaining efficiency without unleashing our full potential.

It was a game now.

And we were playing it too.

The rest of the day continued at the same pace, but with greater control. Every movement was calculated, every attack measured. The demons kept appearing, but they no longer seemed so random.

When the sun began to set, the number of encounters decreased until they disappeared entirely.

We stopped on elevated ground, observing the surrounding fields.

"That's it for today," Scarlett said.

"Yes," I replied.

Lyannis let out a small sigh. "Finally."

Vespera remained alert. "Silence again."

Elara crossed her arms. "But different from before."

Liriel nodded. "Now we know why."

Rai'kanna looked at me. "They learned something today."

I looked toward the horizon.

"Yes."

The wind blew stronger at that moment, lifting dust from the dry ground. The scene looked calm, but the feeling was clear.

This was not repetition.

It was preparation.

Scarlett stepped forward. "And us?"

I thought for a moment.

"We learned too."

The group fell silent.

And for the first time since the beginning of those confrontations...

The war stopped feeling like a simple advance against demons.

And became something more calculated.

More strategic.

More dangerous.

I took a deep breath, keeping my eyes fixed on the horizon.

If this continued at this pace...

Then the next move would not be a small one.

And when it came...

It would be decisive.
