The day began differently even before any movement happened. There was no pressure in the air, nor that constant sense of enemy presence that had become common. The field seemed empty in a way that didn't match everything that had happened over the past few days.
I was already awake when the first adventurers began moving around the camp. The sky was still painted in soft tones, and the wind blew gently, without carrying that weight that had always accompanied the demons' advance before.
Scarlett approached, watching the horizon.
"Nothing."
"I know," I replied.
She crossed her arms.
"Not even a sign of movement."
"Not even a recent trace," I added.
Elara appeared shortly afterward, her eyes alert.
"Lyannis and Vespera are back from reconnaissance."
"Call them," I said.
It didn't take long for the two of them to appear, but this time there was something different in their expressions. It wasn't tension or urgency.
It was uncertainty.
"They disappeared," Lyannis said.
I frowned slightly.
"Explain."
Vespera answered.
"We didn't find any active groups in the areas that were occupied yesterday."
"Not even signs of recent movement," Lyannis added. "They... simply retreated."
Silence fell between us.
Scarlett was the first to react.
"They retreated?"
"Yes," Vespera replied.
Elara crossed her arms thoughtfully.
"That doesn't make sense."
"It does," Liriel said calmly as she approached. "If it's intentional."
I looked at her.
"You think this is part of the plan?"
"Yes."
Rai'kanna joined the group, her gaze firm.
"Then it isn't a withdrawal because of losses."
"No," I replied. "It's repositioning."
Lyannis tilted her head slightly.
"But where to?"
That was the question.
I remained silent for a few seconds, mentally reviewing everything that had happened so far. The patterns, the movements, the small variations.
Nothing pointed to a retreat born of fear.
Everything pointed to control.
"Continue reconnaissance," I finally said. "I want to know how far this retreat goes."
Lyannis nodded.
"We're already on it."
Vespera simply confirmed with a slight nod before disappearing alongside her.
Scarlett still looked suspicious.
"You don't think this could be an opportunity?"
"No."
The answer came immediately.
Elara looked at me.
"Why?"
"Because it's too clean," I replied. "They wouldn't leave this much space if they didn't have control over what they're doing."
Liriel nodded.
"I agree."
Rai'kanna crossed her arms.
"So advancing now would be a mistake."
"Yes."
Scarlett let out a quiet sigh.
"I hate it when the enemy plays with our heads."
"That means he's thinking," I replied.
The morning passed slowly.
No new signs appeared.
No presence.
No movement.
Nothing.
It was as if the field had been emptied.
And that only increased the tension.
Lyannis and Vespera returned a few hours later, this time with more information.
"Confirmed," Lyannis said. "A general retreat."
"Not just here," Vespera added. "Other areas are empty too."
Elara frowned.
"That's far too widespread to be random."
"Yes," I replied. "It's total coordination."
Scarlett looked at me.
"So what's the objective?"
I took a deep breath.
"To buy time."
Liriel added,
"Or prepare something beyond our current reach."
Rai'kanna nodded.
"Or make us lower our guard."
"We're not going to do that," I replied.
The group fell silent for a few moments.
Lyannis broke the mood with a slight smile.
"So we just stay here staring at nothing?"
"No," I replied. "We hold position and expand reconnaissance."
Vespera agreed.
"If anything changes, we'll detect it early."
Elara added,
"And we'll keep active defenses."
Scarlett nodded.
"No relaxing."
The rest of the day followed the same rhythm.
Nothing.
No battles.
No threats.
The absence of action was starting to weigh more heavily than any recent fight. It was a different kind of pressure, quieter, but just as dangerous.
I walked across the field several times, observing the places where battles had taken place before. Now they were empty, as if nothing had ever happened.
But I knew.
This wasn't the end.
When the sun began to descend, the group gathered once more on elevated ground. The scenery seemed far too calm.
"So that's it," Scarlett said. "They just disappeared."
"For now," I replied.
Elara crossed her arms.
"You don't believe it's over."
"No."
Liriel kept her eyes on the horizon.
"Neither do I."
Lyannis shrugged.
"I preferred it when they came straight at us."
Vespera added,
"At least it was predictable."
Rai'kanna looked at me.
"And now?"
I thought for a moment.
"Now we wait."
Scarlett raised an eyebrow slightly.
"Wait?"
"Yes."
Elara understood first.
"No advancing."
"No advancing."
Liriel nodded.
"That keeps our position strong."
Lyannis let out a small sigh.
"And keeps the tension alive."
Vespera concluded,
"But avoids mistakes."
The group agreed.
Night slowly began to fall, bringing once again that heavy silence that was becoming familiar. The campfires were lit, and the watch rotations were organized.
But no one relaxed.
I remained standing, watching the horizon once more.
The field was empty.
But the feeling... wasn't.
I closed my eyes for a brief moment.
And then I understood.
This wasn't a retreat.
It was preparation.
And when the next move came...
It wouldn't be small.
I opened my eyes again, keeping my gaze fixed ahead.
"Get ready," I said quietly.
Because deep down...
I knew.
The game had changed.
And the next move...
Wouldn't be ours.
