Chapter 687 - The Silent South

The next day dawned without any sign of attack. The light mist covering the field gradually dissipated, revealing a scene far too calm for what we were living through. That tranquility brought no comfort; it only reinforced the feeling that something was out of place.

I had been standing since early morning, watching the horizon as the first movements of the camp began to emerge. Some adventurers were already awake, organizing their equipment, while others were only just waking up, but all of them carried the same caution in their eyes.

Scarlett was the first to approach, with her usual firm stride.

"No movement during the night."

"I figured," I replied.

"That doesn't make you feel better, does it?"

"No."

She crossed her arms.

"You still think they're preparing something bigger?"

"I'm certain of it."

Elara appeared shortly afterward, adjusting her glove slightly.

"Lyannis and Vespera are back from reconnaissance."

"Call them over," I said.

It didn't take long for the two of them to approach, their expressions serious but not urgent.

"The south is still... empty," Lyannis said.

"No signs of advancement," Vespera added.

I frowned slightly.

"Nothing?"

"Nothing significant," Lyannis replied. "A few minor presences, but nothing that suggests an attack."

Elara crossed her arms.

"So the other front simply... stopped."

"Or it was never a real front to begin with," Liriel said, approaching as well.

I looked at her.

"You think it was a distraction?"

"It's possible," she answered calmly. "Moving forces to create doubt."

Scarlett let out a small sigh.

"That matches what you said at the meeting."

Rai'kanna joined the group, looking directly at me.

"So the real threat is still here."

"Yes," I replied. "And that hasn't changed."

Lyannis tilted her head slightly.

"Then why not advance now?"

"Because that's exactly what they might want," I answered.

The group fell silent for a moment.

Vespera was the first to speak.

"Advancing without confirmation could expose us."

"Exactly," I added.

Elara nodded.

"If there's a trap... attacking now would mean walking right into it."

Scarlett still looked thoughtful.

"But standing still isn't ideal either."

"We're not standing still," I replied. "We're controlling the pace."

Liriel kept her eyes fixed on me.

"And waiting for them to reveal their next move."

"Yes."

Silence returned, but this time with a slight sense of alignment. Everyone understood the reasoning. It wasn't about acting quickly; it was about acting correctly.

I took a few steps forward, observing the terrain once again. The wind blew steadily, carrying small particles of dust. Nothing else moved.

"We'll maintain our position," I said.

Scarlett nodded.

"I'll reinforce the patrols."

"Do that."

Elara added,

"I'll take responsibility for the magical defense of the perimeter."

"Liriel can assist with that," Rai'kanna said.

Liriel nodded.

"I can maintain a light barrier and monitor any fluctuations."

Lyannis gave a small smile.

"So that leaves us to keep spying."

"Not just spying," I corrected. "I want patterns."

Vespera understood immediately.

"Movement, frequency, direction... everything."

"Exactly."

The group began to disperse to their assignments, each taking on their role naturally. That was something that already worked well between us. We didn't need detailed orders. Just direction.

I remained there for a few more minutes, observing the empty landscape.

The absence of action was almost harder to deal with than direct combat. During a battle, everything was clear. Attack, defense, decision.

But at that moment...

It was waiting.

And waiting required control.

After some time, I began walking through the camp, observing the adventurers. Some were practicing basic movements, others were checking their equipment, but all of them remained attentive. Their confidence had increased—that was obvious. The recent victories had made an impact.

But I knew.

Too much confidence could become carelessness.

Scarlett approached again after organizing her division.

"They're confident."

"I noticed."

"That can be good... or bad."

"Depends on how we use it."

She nodded slightly.

"Are you going to keep them occupied?"

"Yes."

Elara joined us.

"Light training and constant readiness?"

"Exactly."

Liriel added,

"That keeps their minds active."

Lyannis appeared shortly afterward with a small smile.

"And keeps them from getting bored."

Vespera added,

"Or becoming too relaxed."

Rai'kanna observed everything silently before speaking.

"You're controlling the pace of the war."

I looked at her.

"Someone has to."

Time passed slowly throughout the day. Small activities, adjustments, inspections. Nothing out of the ordinary. No new threats.

And that only reinforced the same conclusion.

Something was being prepared.

When the sun began to descend on the horizon, the landscape once again took on that softer tone, though still heavy with tension. The shadows stretched longer, and silence began to take over once more.

"Another day without an attack," Scarlett said.

"Yes."

Elara crossed her arms.

"This is getting far too strange."

"It's already beyond strange," Lyannis said.

Vespera nodded.

"Now it's confirmation."

Liriel kept her eyes on the horizon.

"Something is going to happen."

Rai'kanna looked at me.

"The question is when."

I took a deep breath.

"Soon."

The group remained silent for a few seconds.

"Then we'll be ready," Scarlett said.

"Yes," I replied.

Night fell once again, covering everything in a calm but deceptive darkness. The campfires were lit again, and the watch rotations were organized.

I stayed awake longer, watching the horizon.

Nothing moved.

But the feeling...

Remained.

And this time, stronger than before.

I closed my eyes for a brief moment.

And thought.

If they were waiting for the right moment...

Then so would I.

Because when that moment arrived...

There would be no room for error.

And I had no intention of making any.
