Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: Autonomous Combat Evolution

The atmosphere throughout Training Sector Three had reached an almost unbearable level of tension as complete silence spread across the arena after Rex Hao staggered backward once again. Thousands of students stared toward Platform Seven with expressions ranging from disbelief to genuine fear because what they were witnessing no longer resembled a fight between students.

It resembled the birth of something abnormal.

The battlefield itself had become nearly unrecognizable. Massive fractures spread throughout the reinforced combat platform, while shattered debris covered almost every remaining section of the arena floor. Emergency stabilization barriers surrounding the battlefield flickered continuously under the overwhelming spiritual pressure radiating from both combatants. Even the air itself felt heavy now, distorted slightly by the unstable energy erupting throughout the battlefield. Portions of the arena lighting had begun flickering irregularly while warning systems quietly echoed through nearby sections.

At the center of it all, Rex Hao slowly steadied himself after Huang's latest counterattack disrupted his reinforcement structure once again. Violent spiritual energy surged chaotically around his body while visible cracks spread across portions of his reinforced layer. His breathing had become noticeably heavier now while sweat continuously dripped down his face. Every forced breath caused unstable fluctuations to spread throughout his spiritual pressure.

Yet the thing disturbing Rex the most—

Was fear.

Not fear of losing.

Fear of not understanding what stood in front of him anymore.

Across the battlefield, Huang Ming stood while breathing unevenly, his body trembling beneath the overwhelming strain surging through him. Chaotic spiritual energy flowed violently around his body while faint distortions spread through the surrounding air with every unstable pulse escaping him. Blood still dripped slowly from his arm while the skin along portions of his forearm remained visibly cracked from the earlier impact.

Yet despite the injuries—

Huang's presence continued growing stronger.

And that alone felt deeply unnatural.

Inside Huang's body, the adaptation process had accelerated to terrifying levels. Every movement from Rex triggered immediate microscopic changes throughout Huang's muscles, nervous system, spiritual pathways, reflex responses, bone density, and even spiritual circulation flow. The synchronization between instinct and physical reaction had reached a point where Huang himself no longer fully understood how his body moved.

And that terrified him.

"… Okay, no, seriously," Huang muttered nervously while staring at his trembling hands, "I feel like I'm slowly becoming a boss fight."

Inside his mind, Lyra answered calmly.

"The current combat evolution rate continues increasing."

"…WHY ARE YOU SAYING THAT LIKE IT'S GOOD NEWS?!"

Several nearby students stared toward Huang in complete confusion after hearing him apparently continue arguing with invisible voices.

But nobody laughed anymore.

Because the pressure surrounding Huang had become overwhelming.

Many first-year students had already subconsciously stepped farther away from the battlefield entirely. Even students who originally mocked Huang earlier now looked deeply unsettled while watching him.

Because they could feel it.

Something about Huang's presence no longer felt normal.

Far above the arena, the observation room had descended into complete chaos as countless warning signals flashed violently across the holographic displays surrounding Huang's combat profile.

"His nervous system keeps restructuring itself…"

"No, look at the muscle response adaptation…"

"His reaction efficiency increased again…"

"That's impossible after this amount of physical damage…"

The older instructor standing near the center of the room remained completely silent while staring toward Huang's readings. His expression had grown increasingly serious because the data now showed something even more disturbing than before.

Huang's adaptations were no longer reactive.

They were becoming proactive.

"… He's beginning to evolve before receiving external stimulus," the older instructor muttered quietly.

Several instructors immediately turned toward him.

"What does that mean?"

The older instructor continued staring toward Huang below.

"It means his body is now anticipating future combat requirements."

A heavy silence immediately spread throughout the room because that implication was horrifying.

Normal cultivators adapted after training.

After experience.

After injury.

But Huang's body had begun predicting necessary evolution in advance.

That surpassed ordinary instinct entirely.

Meanwhile, down below, Rex Hao slowly lifted his head while violent spiritual pressure erupted outward from his body again. Cracks spread beneath his feet while unstable reinforcement energy surged around both arms continuously. His reinforcement layer flickered repeatedly now from the immense strain running throughout his body.

"You…" Rex muttered coldly while staring directly toward Huang. "What exactly are you?"

Huang blinked awkwardly.

"… Currently? Confused and in pain."

"That isn't funny anymore."

"… It wasn't supposed to be funny."

The crowd remained silent because Huang genuinely sounded exhausted now.

Not emotionally.

Existentially.

Across the battlefield, Rex Hao's frustration continued growing rapidly. The longer the battle continued, the more unstable his condition became. Maintaining forced reinforcement output at this level continuously strained his muscles and meridians, while emotional instability further disrupted his combat rhythm.

Meanwhile—

Huang kept adapting.

That realization alone made Rex feel increasingly pressured.

Violent spiritual energy suddenly erupted outward from Rex's body once more while his reinforcement layer intensified again through sheer force. Several nearby students instinctively stepped backward after feeling the overwhelming pressure surge throughout the arena.

"He's pushing even further?!"

"His meridians are going to rupture…"

Even some instructors watching nearby had begun looking visibly tense now because Rex Hao was approaching dangerous levels of spiritual overexertion.

Yet Rex no longer cared.

At this point, pride had completely overtaken rational thought.

"I refuse…" Rex growled while dense reinforcement energy compressed violently around his right arm, "…to lose to something like you."

Then Rex exploded forward again.

This time—

Faster than ever before.

The battlefield shattered beneath his acceleration while violent shockwaves erupted throughout the platform. Numerous weaker students completely lost sight of him instantly while fragments of broken metal lifted into the air from the pressure alone.

Yet the moment Rex moved—

Huang's body reacted automatically again.

Not consciously.

Not strategically.

Instinctively.

Every muscle throughout Huang's body shifted before the attack even fully developed. Chaotic spiritual energy surged violently through his meridians while predictive synchronization accelerated further.

And suddenly—

Huang could see it.

Not just the attack.

The outcome.

For a brief instant, Huang's perception processed the entire sequence before it happened. Rex's movement trajectory. Reinforcement instability. Weight distribution. Timing flaws. Energy imbalance. Every detail appeared inside Huang's mind simultaneously.

His body moved immediately.

Rex's reinforced fist descended violently toward Huang's head—

But Huang stepped sideways before the punch even fully extended.

The crowd gasped instantly.

Then Rex redirected the strike toward Huang's ribs—

Yet Huang twisted away before the angle changed completely.

Shock spread visibly across Rex's face.

Because Huang wasn't reacting anymore.

He was predicting.

And not through experience.

Not through battle IQ.

His body itself had begun calculating combat outcomes instinctively before they occurred.

Inside his mind, Lyra's calm voice echoed once more.

"Predictive synchronization has surpassed standard instinctive parameters."

"… I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHAT THAT MEANS ANYMORE!"

But deep down—

Huang already understood.

His body had stopped functioning like a normal cultivator's body entirely.

Every movement now felt automatic.

Every danger triggered immediate adaptation.

Every attack accelerated another evolution.

And the more his body changed—

The less control Huang felt over where this transformation was leading him.

That realization alone sent genuine fear through him for the first time since the battle began.

Because Huang Ming was slowly beginning to understand something terrifying.

The thing evolving inside him—

Might not stop evolving at all.

Across the battlefield, Rex Hao suddenly unleashed another violent barrage of reinforced strikes, but unlike before, desperation had begun contaminating his movements. His attacks remained overwhelmingly powerful, yet small flaws now spread throughout his combat rhythm continuously. Emotional instability disrupted his timing. Anger weakened his control. Frustration corrupted his precision.

And Huang's body noticed everything.

The moment Rex shifted his shoulder slightly too early—

Huang moved.

The instant Rex's reinforcement flow destabilized near his elbow—

Huang adapted.

Every flaw Rex revealed caused Huang's body to evolve another fraction further.

And slowly—

The balance of the battle itself began changing.

For the first time since the fight started, Rex Hao looked like the one struggling to keep up.
