Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: The Fear of What Comes Next

The atmosphere throughout Training Sector Three had become suffocating. Nobody in the arena spoke anymore. Thousands of students remained completely focused on Platform Seven, while tension spread visibly throughout the crowd. Even instructors stationed near the battlefield had gradually become more alert because the situation unfolding before them no longer resembled a standard student combat evaluation. It resembled something spiralling out of control.

At the centre of the shattered battlefield, Rex Hao stood while breathing heavily. Violent reinforcement energy surged chaotically around his body, while cracks spread visibly throughout the spiritual layer surrounding both arms. Blood leaked slowly from the corner of his mouth, while his muscles trembled beneath the pressure of excessive reinforcement strain. Yet despite all of that, the thing destabilising Rex the most was psychological pressure.

Because no matter what he did, Huang Ming kept evolving.

The battlefield surrounding them reflected the terrifying intensity of the fight. Huge fractures stretched across Platform Seven, while shattered steel beams, broken energy conduits, and scorched reinforcement marks covered almost every remaining section of the arena floor. Emergency stabilisation barriers flickered continuously, while warning sirens echoed faintly through nearby sectors. Several support drones had already activated automatically above the battlefield, scanning structural damage as portions of the arena threatened partial collapse.

The arena itself looked moments away from complete destruction.

And standing in the middle of all that devastation, Huang remained standing. Breathing unevenly. Eyes slightly unfocused. Body trembling beneath continuous evolution.

Chaotic spiritual energy flowed violently around him, while unstable distortions spread throughout the surrounding air. Blood still dripped from his damaged arm, while faint cracks remained visible along portions of his skin. Small pulses of energy occasionally burst from his body involuntarily now, causing nearby debris to vibrate slightly every few seconds.

Yet despite those injuries, something about Huang had changed completely. His movements no longer carried hesitation. His posture no longer looked defensive. Even the chaotic energy surrounding him had started moving with strange synchronization now, almost like his body and spiritual flow had merged into one constantly adapting system.

And that terrified everyone watching.

Inside Huang's body, the autonomous evolution process continued accelerating. His muscles constantly adjusted themselves subconsciously while his nervous system processed information at frightening speeds. Every fluctuation in Rex's spiritual pressure triggered immediate optimization responses throughout Huang's body. His reflexes continued refining themselves automatically while even his spiritual circulation pathways began restructuring around combat efficiency.

Even breathing no longer felt natural anymore.

Everything had become instinctive.

Automatic.

And Huang could feel control slipping further away from him with every passing second.

"…Okay," Huang muttered quietly while staring at his own trembling hand again, "this is definitely how horror stories start."

Inside his mind, Lyra answered calmly.

"Autonomous synchronization stability continues increasing."

"…I really need you to stop making that sound terrifyingly positive."

No response came.

That silence unsettled Huang more than the words themselves because somewhere deep inside himself, he was beginning to realize something terrifying.

The system was no longer merely helping him survive.

It was changing him.

Not emotionally.

Biologically.

Spiritually.

Fundamentally.

Across the battlefield, Rex Hao slowly raised his head again while spiritual pressure exploded outward from his body violently. Dense reinforcement energy surged around both arms while nearby debris lifted into the air from the pressure alone. Cracks spread beneath his feet while unstable force distorted the air around him.

Several nearby students immediately stepped backward.

"He's still increasing output?!"

"At this rate his body won't handle the backlash…"

"His reinforcement is becoming unstable…"

Even instructors watching nearby had begun looking visibly tense. But Rex no longer cared about the damage to himself because fear had already begun replacing his pride.

At first, Rex viewed Huang as weak. Then annoying. Then abnormal.

Now—

Rex viewed him as dangerous.

"You…" Rex muttered while staring directly toward Huang. "What are you becoming?"

Huang blinked awkwardly.

"…If I knew, I would probably be panicking harder."

That answer only deepened the tension spreading throughout the arena because Huang genuinely sounded afraid. Not of Rex.

Of himself.

Far above the battlefield, the observation room remained in complete chaos as holographic combat readings flashed continuously across countless displays.

"His reflex synchronization increased again…"

"No, wait—his body adapted before Rex released pressure…"

"That isn't reaction anymore…"

"His nervous system is predicting movement chains…"

"His biological structure is reorganizing itself under stress…"

The older instructor remained completely silent while staring toward Huang's profile because the data now showed something horrifying.

Huang's body had started prioritizing combat efficiency above biological stability itself.

"…His evolution process is abandoning normal safety limitations," the older instructor muttered quietly.

Several instructors immediately turned toward him.

"What does that mean?"

The older instructor's expression darkened slightly.

"It means his body no longer cares whether adaptation damages him."

A heavy silence filled the room because everyone understood what that implied.

Huang's body had begun treating survival and evolution as more important than long-term physical stability.

Meanwhile, down below, Rex Hao finally snapped completely. Violent spiritual pressure exploded outward from his body while reinforcement energy compressed around him with overwhelming force. Cracks spread violently throughout the battlefield while nearby stabilization barriers flickered intensely under the pressure.

"I'M ENDING THIS!" Rex roared furiously.

Then he attacked.

The battlefield exploded beneath his acceleration while violent shockwaves erupted outward. Several students completely lost sight of Rex instantly while fragments of broken steel launched into the air behind him. The sheer force of his movement caused portions of the shattered platform to collapse inward entirely.

Yet before Rex even fully crossed half the battlefield—

Huang's body moved.

Automatically.

Instinctively.

Without permission.

Huang's eyes widened slightly because he didn't consciously decide to move.

His body simply acted on its own.

Chaotic spiritual energy surged violently throughout his meridians while predictive synchronization accelerated again. Every tiny detail surrounding Rex appeared instantly inside Huang's perception.

Trajectory.

Timing.

Weakness.

Impact direction.

Failure point.

Muscle strain.

Spiritual imbalance.

All of it appeared simultaneously inside Huang's mind like combat calculations unfolding faster than conscious thought itself.

And before Huang consciously understood any of it—

His body reacted.

Rex's fist descended violently toward Huang's head.

Huang stepped aside before the punch fully extended.

Rex redirected immediately.

Huang shifted first.

Rex attacked again.

Huang had already moved.

Again.

And again.

And again.

The crowd stared in complete disbelief because Rex Hao looked slower now.

Not physically.

Predictively.

Huang's body had begun operating ahead of combat itself.

Across the battlefield, panic finally appeared inside Rex's eyes because for the first time since the fight began, he could no longer touch Huang at all.

Every strike missed.

Every adjustment failed.

Every escalation became meaningless.

"You monster…" Rex muttered unconsciously while launching another desperate strike.

The moment those words left Rex's mouth, Huang froze slightly.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Because somewhere deep inside himself, a terrifying thought surfaced.

What if Rex was right?

What if this thing inside him was no longer human?

What if every second of adaptation pushed him further away from being himself?

What if the person standing here right now was already changing into something else entirely?

That momentary hesitation caused tiny instability throughout Huang's synchronization.

And for the first time in several minutes, his body reacted violently.

Pain exploded throughout Huang's entire nervous system instantly.

Chaotic spiritual energy surged uncontrollably around him while cracks spread visibly across portions of his arm and neck. Violent pressure erupted outward from his body while nearby debris shattered from the unstable energy pulse. The arena floor beneath Huang fractured instantly while unstable waves of spiritual force spread outward uncontrollably.

Several students immediately stepped backward in alarm.

"What happened?!"

"His energy just destabilized!"

"That pressure spike was insane!"

Even the instructors watching above immediately became tense because the energy erupting from Huang no longer felt merely chaotic.

It felt unstable in a dangerous way.

Inside Huang's mind, Lyra's voice echoed sharply for the first time.

"Warning. Synchronization instability detected."

Huang immediately felt cold fear spread through him because for the first time since this battle began, the evolution inside him felt unstable.

And somehow—

That felt even more dangerous than Rex Hao ever did.

Pain continued spreading violently throughout Huang's body while his vision blurred slightly. The synchronization process that previously felt smooth and automatic now felt distorted, almost like multiple conflicting adaptations were trying to occur simultaneously. His muscles twitched involuntarily while chaotic spiritual energy pulsed erratically throughout his meridians.

Then suddenly—

Huang heard it.

Not Lyra.

Something else.

A faint sound deep inside the synchronization itself.

Almost like another heartbeat.

His eyes widened slightly.

"…What… was that?"

No answer came.

But deep inside Huang's body, something responded.

A pulse.

Slow.

Heavy.

Ancient.

The chaotic spiritual energy surrounding Huang suddenly changed. The instability stopped fluctuating randomly. Instead, it began pulsing rhythmically.

Like breathing.

The moment that rhythm appeared, every instinct throughout Huang's body screamed danger.

Not external danger.

Internal danger.

And somewhere deep within the synchronization itself—

Something began waking up.

Huang suddenly felt another pulse spread throughout his body.

This one stronger.

The moment it happened, the chaotic energy around him compressed unnaturally before expanding outward again in a slow rhythmic wave. Nearby debris lifted several centimeters off the ground while cracks spread farther throughout the battlefield beneath his feet.

The entire arena felt it.

Several students immediately paled.

"…What is that feeling?"

"That pressure…"

"It feels wrong…"

Even the instructors watching above immediately became visibly alarmed because the energy radiating from Huang had changed completely.

Before, his spiritual fluctuations felt unstable. Chaotic. Evolving.

Now—

They felt alive.

The older instructor's expression darkened instantly.

"…No…"

Another pulse erupted.

THUMP.

This time the entire platform trembled slightly.

Huang's breathing became uneven while pain spread violently throughout his chest. He instinctively grabbed part of his uniform while chaotic spiritual energy continued pulsing rhythmically around him.

Inside his mind, Lyra spoke again, but for the first time, her voice no longer sounded completely calm.

"Unknown synchronization pattern detected."

Huang immediately noticed it.

"…Wait…"

His eyes widened slightly.

"…You sound nervous."

No answer came immediately.

And somehow, that terrified him more than the pain itself.

Across the battlefield, even Rex Hao had stopped attacking completely now. The rage on his face had gradually been replaced by visible uncertainty while unstable reinforcement energy continued flickering around his arms.

Because even Rex could feel it now.

Something inside Huang had changed.

The pressure radiating from Huang no longer felt like a cultivator undergoing unstable evolution.

It felt like something waking up from deep inside him.

Then suddenly—

Huang's vision blurred again.

For a split second, the battlefield disappeared entirely.

Instead—

He saw darkness.

Endless darkness.

And within that darkness—

A massive silhouette.

His breathing stopped instantly.

The figure was enormous.

Humanoid.

Motionless.

Yet despite barely being visible, Huang instinctively understood one terrifying thing.

It was looking at him.

Then the vision vanished instantly.

Huang staggered backward while breathing heavily, cold sweat running down his face.

"…What the hell was that…"

Around him, the chaotic energy pulsing from his body intensified further.

And deep inside the synchronization process—

The second heartbeat continued echoing.
