Chapter 12 - The Noble Lady’s Curiosity

The atmosphere inside Moonbean Café shifted the moment the noblewoman entered.

Conversations quieted.

Chairs stopped moving.

Even Lina sat slightly straighter for once.

Well—

Straighter for about three seconds.

Then she resumed eating cookies.

Ren quietly observed the newcomer from behind the counter.

Elegant silver hair flowed over her shoulders like silk, and deep blue eyes calmly scanned the café interior.

Nothing about her expression appeared arrogant.

Curious, perhaps.

But composed.

The two guards behind her, however, looked deeply uncomfortable standing inside such a small café.

Probably because Gareth alone looked capable of starting a war inside the building.

The noblewoman's gaze eventually settled on the coffee cups scattered throughout the room.

Then toward the desserts.

And finally—

Toward Ren.

"You are the owner?" she asked politely.

Ren nodded.

"Yes."

"A pleasure."

She gave a graceful bow of her head.

"My name is Eleanor Valemont."

Several people in the café visibly reacted.

Boris nearly inhaled his cookie.

Serena adjusted her glasses immediately.

Even Gareth raised an eyebrow slightly.

Ren blinked.

"…Should I know that name?"

The café became completely silent.

Lina whispered dramatically toward him.

"Ren."

"…Hm?"

"You just accidentally attacked nobility."

"I only asked a question."

"Dangerous question."

Eleanor herself, however, suddenly laughed softly.

A quiet elegant laugh.

"It's fine," she said.

"Honestly, it's refreshing."

Serena sighed quietly into her coffee.

"Lady Eleanor is the second daughter of House Valemont."

"…Ah."

Ren still had absolutely no idea what that meant politically.

But judging by everyone's reactions—

Important.

Very important.

The noblewoman slowly approached the counter while observing the café carefully.

"This place feels different from other establishments."

"That's what everyone keeps saying."

"And they are correct."

Her eyes drifted toward:

Fina organizing cups carefully

Mira writing magical coffee research

Lina eating desserts like a battlefield reward

Gareth somehow intimidating pastries

Then back toward Ren.

"There is no tension here."

The words lingered quietly in the room.

No tension.

Ren understood immediately.

Taverns in fantasy worlds were usually loud, rough, stressful places.

But Moonbean Café was calm.

People rested here.

Talked here.

Recovered here.

Eleanor eventually sat gracefully near the window.

One of the guards immediately stepped forward.

"My lady, this establishment hasn't been inspected—"

"It smells wonderful."

"…That is not proper safety evaluation criteria."

"It should be."

The guard looked spiritually exhausted.

Ren sympathized deeply.

Then Eleanor looked toward him again.

"I would like to try this coffee everyone speaks about."

"And dessert," Lina added immediately.

Serena nodded calmly.

"The desserts are surprisingly dangerous."

"That is not reassuring," Eleanor admitted.

Ren quietly moved behind the counter.

Somehow, he felt more nervous now than before.

Adventurers were simple.

Merchants were manageable.

Nobility?

Entirely different category.

Still—

Coffee remained coffee.

And that was something he understood.

The familiar brewing process slowly calmed him again.

Grind the beans.

Heat the water.

Pour carefully.

The rich aroma spread warmly through the café once more.

Even Eleanor's guards looked slightly distracted by the smell.

Meanwhile, Ren plated several honey butter cookies beside the drink.

Simple presentation.

But warm.

Comfortable.

Homemade.

A few minutes later, he carefully placed the tray before Eleanor.

The noblewoman observed the cup curiously.

"So dark," she murmured.

"That was my reaction too," Mira admitted.

Eleanor gently lifted the cup.

Took one sip.

And froze.

Ah.

There it was again.

That exact moment.

The realization.

The warmth.

The confusion.

The immediate second sip.

Moonbean Café had claimed another victim.

Eleanor slowly lowered the cup.

"…Remarkable."

Her voice sounded genuinely surprised now.

"It's unlike anything I've tasted before."

Ren relaxed slightly.

Success.

Then Eleanor tried one of the cookies.

The result was immediate.

Her composed noblewoman expression cracked entirely.

"…Oh."

Lina pointed dramatically.

"SEE?"

Serena sighed.

"We really need to stop reacting like a cult."

"We ARE a cult," Gareth muttered while eating another cookie.

"That explains so much," Boris agreed.

The noblewoman laughed softly again.

And suddenly—

The intimidating atmosphere around her disappeared completely.

Now she simply looked like someone enjoying warm coffee in a peaceful café.

"…I understand why people keep talking about this place," Eleanor admitted.

Her gaze wandered quietly around the room.

"Most establishments separate people."

"Separate?" Ren asked.

"The wealthy from the poor. Nobles from commoners. Adventurers from merchants."

Her eyes landed briefly on Fina.

Yet there was no disgust there.

Only observation.

"But here," Eleanor continued softly, "everyone simply feels like customers."

Silence settled briefly.

Even Ren paused.

Because honestly—

He never intentionally designed it that way.

It just happened naturally.

Moonbean Café became a place where people relaxed enough to stop caring about status for a little while.

Then suddenly—

[Ding.]

A system notification appeared.

[Unique Reputation Trait Acquired.]

Moonbean Café Trait:

Neutral Ground

Description:

Customers feel less social tension while inside the café.

"…That sounds unexpectedly powerful."

"What sounds powerful?" Serena immediately asked.

"Nothing."

The entire café groaned simultaneously.

Eleanor smiled slightly into her coffee.

"You truly are mysterious, Mr. Ren."

"If I explained my life, it would sound illegal."

"That somehow makes me more curious."

"That's the wrong response."

Outside the café window, more people slowly gathered near the street again.

Rumors continued spreading.

About:

the strange black drink

magical desserts

the relaxing atmosphere

the mysterious café owner

Moonbean Café was no longer simply a hidden little shop.

It was becoming something people talked about.

Something people remembered.

And perhaps—

Something important to this town.
