"Where the hell am I?"
I stood frozen on a narrow wooden bridge suspended over an endless black void.
At least, I thought it was a bridge.
The planks beneath my boots looked old enough to crumble if I breathed too hard. The ropes on either side swayed gently despite the complete absence of wind.
I stared downward.
There was no bottom, no ground, no water, and no darkness, even. Just emptiness.
My stomach twisted.
The bridge stretched ahead, disappearing into a thick gray fog. Then I noticed something that made my skin crawl. There wasn't just one bridge—there were thousands. Some crossed above me, others hung below, some twisted upside down, and some appeared to lead nowhere at all.
An endless web of suspended bridges stretched across the void like veins inside the body of something enormous.
"What the hell..."
I turned around.
The bridge behind me was gone.
A second ago, I could've sworn it had been there. Now there was only empty space.
