I leaned back in my chair slowly, crossing one leg over the other with deliberate ease, like I hadn't just flipped the entire mood of the table upside down.
"Well?" I pressed lightly, tapping the table once with my finger. "Don't stop now. I am really wondering how many came before this….." I raised my finger in air quotation ' who're'
A choke of laughter came from someone at the far end of the table before it was abruptly muffled.
Zelda's jaw tightened.
"Careful," she said smoothly, though the edge in her tone betrayed her. It was shaking. "You might not like what you hear."
I tilted my head, feigning innocence.
"Oh, I'm sure I won't," I replied sweetly. "But I'd still like to know. I hate being left out of important pack… history."
That did it.
A few snickers broke out this time, not even bothering to hide it.
Zelda shot them a sharp look before returning her attention to me, her smile now thin and forced.
"You talk a lot for someone who just got here," she muttered.
