The air inside the ancient temple-cave tasted of old copper and stale ozone, heavy with a claustrophobic dread that pressed down upon the chest like a slab of cold marble. Shadows clung to the eight towering stone pillars upholding the vaulted ceiling, twisting into grotesque, writhing shapes under the dim, sickly-green luminescence bleeding from cracks in the obsidian floor. It was a suffocating, dead place—a subterranean tomb where time had long since abandoned its post.
There was no borrowed flesh this time. No ancient warrior's soul to anchor him. Luke stood in his own skin, cold sweat prickling at his neck, while beside him, a sudden, violent tearing sensation ripped through his chest. Ingis was forcefully wrenched outward, expelled from the sanctuary of his core with a blinding flash of kinetic force, stumbling onto the stone floor with a sharp gasp.
In the dead center of the chamber loomed an altar of polished obsidian, gleaming with a slick, greasy wetness. Flanking it stood six statues carved from weeping blood-stone, while a seventh, bearing a jagged iron crown, sat enthroned upon a raised dais above them.
The voice echoed, vibrating through the cold stone and the marrow of their bones.
"This is the final trial" the voice intoned, carrying the chilling finality of a guillotine blade. "It demands a sacrifice of what you hold dear. Only one of you shall walk out of this place alive. You have one minute to make your decision."
Time fractured. The silence stretched, heavy and poisonous.
THIRTY
On the throne, the crowned statue abruptly tilted its head with a harsh, grinding scrape of stone, its hollow eye sockets locking onto Luke. The motion was unnatural, devoid of life yet pulsing with malicious intent, sending an icy spike of pure terror straight down Luke's spine.
FIFTEEN
The six statues guarding the altar began to move, their stone joints groaning with an earsplitting shriek of friction. They did not rush forward in a blind charge; they stalked, methodical and terrifying. One clutched a heavy war scythe; another, a jagged spear; a third, a massive, tower-like shield; two drew towering composite bows forged from petrified bone; and the last spun twin daggers of dull, light-absorbing obsidian. Upon the throne, the crowned ruler rose, its grip tightening around a colossal, rune-etched greatsword.
TEN
Luke's breath hitched, his mana reserves flaring in his veins.
NINE
EIGHT
A weapon materialized out of thin air, weaving itself into a tight grip around Luke's right hand with a flash of white-hot mana.
FIVE
A thick, jagged armor of living stone erupted over his skin, encasing his body in a heavy, defensive cocoon. Without missing a beat, Luke snapped a sharp hand signal toward Ingis, his tactical mind running the math at lightning speed. *The two archers. High-mage equivalents. The leader on the throne is an early-stage archmage. Move!*
ONE
"To hell with choice," Luke said.
The low, gravelly rasp of his voice carried an absolute, freezing finality that sent violent chills cascading down the spine of the cavern itself.
ZERO
Mayhem descended.
The crowned leader breached the space between them in an instant, its colossal form blurring as it vanished and reappeared directly before Luke, swinging its greatsword in a horizontal arc designed to shear his head clean from his shoulders. The rest of the statues surged forward to orchestrate the slaughter, though the scythe-wielding sentinel peeled away, intercepting Ingis in a flurry of sweeping, whistling steel.
Luke called upon the roaring furnace of his Fire Heart, his mana channels scorching with heat. He channeled a high-tier 6th-circle gravitational skill, an invisible, crushing force violently tearing the massive shield out of the broad statue's grasp, sending it clattering away.
At that exact microsecond, Luke's mana-woven sword and the leader's descending greatsword collided.
CLANG!
The shockwave blasted the stone floor into powder, throwing up a blinding veil of dust
'My arms feel like they're snapping at the elbows,' Luke thought, panic surging behind his teeth as the sheer kinetic weight of the archmage-tier statue threatened to crush his spine. 'Its mana density is suffocating. If I hold back for even a fraction of a second, I'm split in half.'
Across the bloody chamber, the battle was a symphony of visceral violence. Ingis moved with blistering, frantic grace, her wings catching the pale light as she wove through a deadly web of arrows fired by the twin bone-bow statues.
'She's taking the brunt of the ranged pressure. I have to break the line,' Luke thought, gritting his teeth as the leader's greatsword pressed down, grinding sparks against his blade.
With a roar, Luke deflected the blow just enough to sidestep, but the surrounding statues swarmed. The two archers loosed point-blank volleys of kinetic-tipped arrows. Ingis, moving with desperate prediction, intercepted a volley meant for Luke's blind spot, her wings snapping outward to deflect the projectiles—only for the sharp bone-tips to pierce straight through her primary feathers, tearing flesh and shattering bone with a sickening crunch. Ingis cried out, a sharp, ragged sound of agony that echoed off the damp walls.
Seizing the bloody opening, Luke retaliated with unbridled brutality. Channeling his remaining 6th-circle burst, he drove his stone-encased fist straight into the chest of the closest archer-statue, shattering its stone torso into a thousand flying shrapnel pieces. The first to fall.
Instantly pivoting, he hurled his mana-blade through the air, impaling the shieldless statue and causing it to collapse into a heap of rubble. The second to fall.
But the toll was catastrophic.
The remaining statues were a relentless tide of mutilation. The scythe-wielder carved a deep, bloody crescent across Ingis's back, sending her crashing into the obsidian altar with broken, bloody wings trailing uselessly behind her.
At the same time, the crowned leader exploited Luke's momentary distraction. With blinding velocity, its greatsword thrust forward, piercing straight through Luke's right leg.
A choked gasp tore from Luke's throat as the cold steel shredded muscle and pinned him to the ground. He spat a mouthful of dark, iron-tasting blood, his vision swimming violently at the edges as crimson pooled beneath him.
A few feet away, Ingis lay broken, gasping for breath, her wings mangled beyond repair, while the towering leader raised its greatsword high above her head to deliver the final, executioner's stroke.
Desperation clawed at his chest, cold and absolute. There was no more room for defiance. No more tactical escape.
As the greatsword began its downward descent toward Ingis, Luke screamed out, his voice cracking with raw, desperate agony:
"Wait!"
He paused for a fraction of a second, weighing his words as the cold dread of reality set in.
"I choose to be the sacrifice. Let Ingis go," he said, his voice trembling in the damp air as he finally accepted the agonizing futility of refusing to choose.
