Chapter 73 - Chapter 73 – The Man Without a Name

The entrance continued to open.

Stone dragged across stone.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Cold air entered the sanctuary—

followed by something heavier.

Chakra.

Too many kinds.

Twisted together inside a single body.

Kushina's chains spread around her.

Golden links filled the chamber.

Minato moved beside Hana.

Daichi stood between the pedestal and the opening.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody needed to.

A figure appeared beyond the doorway.

Tall.

Wrapped in a dark travelling cloak.

The same mask concealed his face.

Smooth.

Pale.

Without a symbol.

He did not step inside immediately.

He stood at the threshold—

watching them.

Waiting.

The sanctuary's voice echoed through the chamber.

"Constructed vessel detected."

A crimson barrier formed across the entrance.

"Foreign core identified."

The masked stranger tilted his head.

"So it still remembers me."

Daichi raised his kunai.

"Do not move."

The stranger looked toward him.

"You said that the last time."

A pause.

"It did not help."

The barrier flashed.

Hundreds of seal markings spread across the doorway.

The sanctuary spoke again.

"Unauthorized vessel."

"Return stolen core."

The stranger's cloak shifted in the cold air.

"I cannot."

Kushina's chains tightened around the entrance.

"You mean you won't."

His masked face turned toward her.

"No."

A pause.

"I mean it would kill me."

The sanctuary attacked.

Crimson chains erupted from the walls.

Not Kushina's.

Older.

Sharper.

Created to restrain whatever crossed the threshold.

They wrapped around the stranger's arms and chest.

For a moment—

he did not resist.

Then the air changed.

Red chakra appeared first.

Hot.

Violent.

A second presence followed.

Blue fire moved across his shoulder.

Then purple chakra crackled around one hand.

Gold flashed beneath his skin.

The sanctuary chains trembled.

One after another—

they shattered.

The force struck the chamber like a wave.

Kushina planted her feet.

Her own chains drove into the floor to keep her upright.

Hana cried out.

The faded mark on her neck burned black.

Minato caught her before she fell.

Kurama rose behind the bars.

Every tail lifted.

His growl filled Kushina's mind.

"…those fragments…"

She felt his rage.

Not directed at the stranger.

At what had been done to him.

"They belong to your siblings."

A long silence.

Then—

"…yes…"

The word carried more pain than anger.

The stranger stepped through the broken barrier.

The sanctuary lights turned crimson.

"Containment threat confirmed."

Stone panels opened across the ceiling.

Seal weapons pointed toward him.

Kushina moved before they fired.

Her chains shot upward—

wrapping around the mechanisms.

"Stop!"

Daichi looked at her.

"What are you doing?"

"I'm stopping the sanctuary from killing him before we know what he is."

"He broke through its barrier."

"It attacked first."

The stranger studied her.

"You defend quickly."

Kushina glared at him.

"I'm not defending you."

A pause.

"I'm delaying your execution."

"Generous."

The sanctuary attempted to move the weapons again.

Kushina's chains held them in place.

"I am the Guardian."

"Confirmed."

"Then suspend elimination."

A pause followed.

"Constructed vessel presents critical risk."

"So does everything in this mountain."

Minato glanced toward her.

"She has a point."

Daichi looked at him.

"That does not help."

Kushina tightened her chains.

"Suspend it."

The lights flickered.

Then slowly—

the stone weapons withdrew.

"Elimination suspended by Guardian authority."

"Threat status remains active."

The stranger stepped farther into the chamber.

"Reasonable."

Daichi did not lower his kunai.

"Remove the mask."

The stranger remained still.

"No."

Kushina raised one chain.

"That wasn't a request."

His attention shifted toward the golden link hovering beside his throat.

For the first time—

his chakra changed.

Not rising.

Not threatening.

Uneasy.

"You may regret seeing what they made."

Hana looked up sharply.

"They."

The stranger turned toward her.

The black mark at the base of her neck pulsed again.

His mask followed the movement.

"You survived."

Hana's breathing stopped.

"You know me?"

"No."

A pause.

"But I know your seal."

Hana pushed herself away from Minato.

"You were there."

The stranger remained silent.

"In the facility."

Her voice shook.

"There was a room beneath the laboratory."

A memory moved behind her eyes.

Glass.

Water.

A human shape suspended in darkness.

Masked researchers standing outside the chamber.

Hana stared at him.

"You were inside the tank."

The stranger's hands slowly curled.

"You should not remember that."

"They thought I was unconscious."

"They usually did."

Kushina looked between them.

"What did they call him?"

Hana swallowed.

"The shell."

The word echoed through the sanctuary.

The Voice laughed beneath the floor.

Softly.

The stranger's entire body stiffened.

He looked toward the stone.

"Do not listen to it."

Kushina's eyes narrowed.

"You can hear it?"

"I have heard it for years."

The Voice whispered through the mountain.

"My empty body."

The stranger's chakra surged.

The floor cracked beneath his feet.

"Be silent."

"You came home."

"I said be silent."

Blue fire erupted along his arm.

It burned without heat—

then vanished as quickly as it had appeared.

Kushina watched him carefully.

The Voice was affecting him.

Not controlling him.

Not yet.

Daichi moved slightly closer.

"Why are you here?"

The stranger looked toward the inheritance scroll.

"For the same reason you are."

"To free Hana?" Kushina asked.

"No."

Her chains shifted toward him.

He continued before she could attack.

"I came to stop the fragment from using her."

Hana touched the faded seal.

"You knew about me?"

"I knew they had created a compatible vessel."

"But not who."

"No."

His voice remained calm.

"They never gave subjects names in the records."

Hana flinched.

Kushina saw it.

So did he.

For the first time—

his voice changed.

Barely.

"I am sorry."

Daichi's expression remained hard.

"You expect us to believe the organization's weapon came here to help?"

The stranger looked at him.

"I am not their weapon."

"Your body carries stolen Bijuu chakra."

"My body carries whatever they forced into it."

"You worked with them."

"They built me."

Silence filled the chamber.

The stranger reached toward his mask.

Slowly.

Kushina's chains remained raised.

He unfastened the straps.

Then removed it.

Hana inhaled sharply.

The face beneath it was human—

but only at first glance.

His skin was pale.

Too smooth in some places.

Covered by dark seal lines in others.

They ran from his temples—

beneath his eyes—

down his throat.

One eye was grey.

The other held no single color.

Red shifted into blue.

Blue into gold.

Never settling.

There were no scars from injury.

Only seams.

Places where seal-crafted flesh had been joined together.

Kushina's chains lowered slightly.

Not from trust.

From shock.

The stranger watched her reaction.

"They attempted to create a body that could contain any chakra."

Kushina stared at the lines across his face.

"An artificial body."

"Yes."

Minato studied him.

"But the sanctuary said a constructed vessel has no consciousness."

"It should not."

Daichi's grip tightened around his kunai.

"Then what are you?"

The stranger looked toward the empty mask in his hand.

"A failure."

The Voice whispered beneath them.

"A door."

The stranger's mixed eye darkened.

"No."

"A hollow shape."

"No."

"Waiting to be filled."

"I am not empty."

The final words struck the chamber harder than a shout.

The dark seal lines across his face began to glow.

Several different chakra signatures fought beneath his skin.

His body trembled.

Kushina felt Kurama move.

Not fear.

Recognition.

"…he is losing control…"

Kushina's chains rose again.

"Can you stop it?"

Kurama growled.

"…not without tearing those fragments apart…"

"And him?"

Silence.

That was answer enough.

Kushina stepped closer to the stranger.

"Look at me."

He did not.

"Look at me."

His mismatched eyes finally met hers.

"The Voice is amplifying whatever you already feel."

"I know."

"Then stop listening."

A humourless smile touched his face.

"You make that sound simple."

"It isn't."

Another step.

"But it is possible."

"You know nothing about me."

Kushina's chains moved slowly around him.

Not binding.

Surrounding.

"I know what it feels like to have something inside you that everyone else fears."

Kurama growled.

"…rude…"

She ignored him.

"I know what it feels like when people decide what you are before you speak."

The stranger's chakra flickered.

"I was not born."

"That doesn't mean you aren't alive."

The sanctuary lights changed.

Crimson symbols appeared above the stranger.

Scanning.

Searching.

"Constructed structure confirmed."

"Independent consciousness detected."

Everyone looked upward.

The stranger froze.

The sanctuary continued.

"Identity formation inconsistent with original vessel design."

Kushina looked at him.

"You heard it."

His expression did not change.

But his chakra did.

For one moment—

the chaos inside him became still.

Hana whispered:

"You're not empty."

The Voice struck the barriers beneath them.

The entire sanctuary shook.

The stranger dropped his mask.

His hand moved to his chest.

Directly above his heart.

"No…"

A white light appeared beneath his clothing.

Round.

Covered in tiny seal markings.

The vessel core.

Hana's mark answered immediately.

Black lines spread across her neck.

She screamed.

Minato caught her.

The stranger staggered backward.

The white light in his chest grew brighter.

The inheritance scroll opened by itself.

The three symbols appeared above the pedestal.

Uzumaki.

Bijuu.

Vessel.

All three began to glow.

Daichi looked toward Kushina.

"The signatures."

She understood.

Her Uzumaki chakra.

The stolen Bijuu fragments inside the stranger.

Hana's vessel seal.

All of them were now inside the sanctuary.

Together.

Exactly what the First Seal required.

The ancient voice spoke.

"Complete verification detected."

Kushina stared upward.

"I did not authorize anything."

"Verification is automatic."

Stone moved behind the pillars.

The hidden passage began to appear.

"No."

Kushina sent her chains toward the wall.

They wrapped around the moving stones.

The mechanisms continued beneath them.

Her chains strained.

"Stop opening it!"

"Guardian authorization not required after complete signature verification."

"Then change the rules!"

"Unable."

"Useless building!"

The stranger fell to one knee.

The core's light burned through his cloak.

Hana collapsed beside the pedestal.

A line of black chakra formed between them.

Thin.

Almost invisible.

It ran from Hana's seal—

to the core inside his chest—

then downward.

Toward the Voice.

Minato pressed a seal tag against the connection.

The paper turned black instantly.

"It's using both of them."

Daichi joined him.

"To complete the transfer."

The stranger looked toward Kushina.

"Separate us."

"How?"

"Destroy the core."

Hana's eyes widened.

"No."

Kushina stared at him.

"You said that would kill you."

"Yes."

"Then no."

"The fragment cannot take a body if the core no longer exists."

Kushina's voice hardened.

"I said no."

The passage opened another hand's width.

Cold darkness appeared behind the stone.

The Voice spoke through it.

"You cannot save both."

Kushina's chains shook.

The words entered her mind—

searching for doubt.

Finding it.

Hana or the stranger.

Break the core—

save Hana.

Keep it intact—

risk the Voice escaping.

The same choice.

Again.

One life against another.

The Voice whispered:

"Choose."

Kushina closed her eyes.

"No."

"One vessel must remain."

"No."

"One will belong to me."

Golden chakra erupted through the chamber.

Kushina's chains slammed into the walls.

The floor.

The pedestal.

Every seal surrounding them.

"I am done accepting choices made by monsters."

The stranger looked at her.

"You do not have another option."

"You sound like Daichi."

Daichi did not look away from the dark connection.

"This is not the time."

"It's never the time."

Kushina reached for the inheritance scroll.

The parchment moved violently beneath her hand.

Pages turned.

Diagrams flashed past.

Guardian bindings.

Constructed bodies.

Core structures.

Nothing stayed long enough to read.

"Show me how to divide the core."

The sanctuary answered.

"Core division is prohibited."

"Why?"

"Previous attempts resulted in identity collapse."

The stranger's breathing became uneven.

"There is your answer."

Kushina ignored him.

"Show me."

"Guardian request denied."

Her chains tightened around the pedestal.

"Show me."

"Denied."

Kushina's chakra surged.

The sanctuary lights flickered.

"I accepted your oath."

A pause.

"You accepted me as Guardian."

The golden chains connected to the scroll.

"So either help me protect them—"

The stone beneath them cracked.

"—or find another heir."

Silence.

The hidden passage continued opening.

Slowly.

The Voice laughed.

Then the scroll stopped moving.

A single page remained open.

Blank.

For one heartbeat—

nothing appeared.

Then crimson ink spread across it.

A new diagram formed.

One vessel core.

A line through its center.

Two smaller circles on either side.

Minato leaned closer.

"There is a division method."

Daichi studied the symbols.

"Not here."

Kushina read the script beneath the diagram.

"The original Guardian chamber."

The sanctuary spoke.

"Core division may only be performed at the First Seal."

Hana struggled to lift her head.

"The island."

Kushina nodded.

The destination on the map.

The true First Seal.

The place where the main consciousness—or whatever remained of it—was still contained.

The most dangerous place they could possibly go.

The stranger's core flashed.

The black connection thickened.

He cried out.

Not loudly.

But his artificial body began to split along the seal lines.

Light leaked through the seams in his skin.

Kushina moved toward him.

Her chains wrapped around his chest—

carefully avoiding the core.

"What is your name?"

His mismatched eyes found hers.

"What?"

"Your name."

"I do not have one."

"Then choose one."

The Voice struck the passage.

Stone exploded outward.

A dark hand appeared briefly between the barriers—

made entirely of chakra.

Daichi threw three seal tags.

Minato added his own formula.

The hand vanished.

But the opening continued to widen.

The stranger stared at Kushina.

"You are asking me to choose a name now?"

"I need something to call you while I save your life."

For the first time—

something almost human crossed his face.

Confusion.

Disbelief.

Perhaps even amusement.

"I do not know how."

"Then survive long enough to decide."

Kushina drove her chains into the floor around him.

A Guardian Binding formed.

Golden formulas connected to the core.

The black line weakened.

Not breaking.

Slowing.

Kurama's chakra rose inside her.

"…use mine…"

Kushina froze.

"What?"

"…the stolen fragments are reacting to me…"

A pause.

"…give them something stronger to hear…"

"You want me to release your chakra?"

"…only enough to drown out the Voice…"

She looked toward the opening passage.

The darkness beneath them was growing.

Hana screamed again.

The stranger's body cracked further.

There was no time.

"Do it."

Red chakra flooded Kushina's chains.

Gold became crimson.

The sanctuary shook beneath the force.

The fragments inside the stranger reacted immediately.

Blue fire.

Purple lightning.

Dense gold.

Dark red.

They surged toward Kushina—

then stopped.

Kurama roared through her.

Not at the stranger.

At the stolen pieces of his siblings.

The sound filled every chakra line in the chamber.

For one brief moment—

the fragments answered.

Not with words.

With recognition.

The chaos inside the stranger settled.

The core's light dimmed.

Hana's black mark stopped spreading.

The connection to the Voice weakened.

The stranger looked at Kushina.

His voice came out barely above a whisper.

"What did you do?"

"Kurama reminded them they aren't alone."

Inside her—

the fox became very still.

Kushina felt the meaning of her own words.

So did he.

Daichi shouted from the passage.

"We cannot hold it!"

The barrier cracked.

The dark hand returned.

Then another.

The Voice was using the opening to build itself piece by piece.

Kushina looked at the scroll.

The First Seal.

Core division.

The only way to save Hana and the stranger without freeing the fragment.

But they had to survive the sanctuary first.

"Can the transport seal take us outside?" she asked.

"Affirmative."

"Everyone?"

"Foreign core creates instability."

"Can it do it or not?"

A pause.

"Survival probability: forty-two percent."

The stranger looked toward the open passage.

"Better than remaining."

Daichi threw another seal.

The barrier splintered.

"Do it!"

Light formed beneath their feet.

The transport circle expanded.

Hana grabbed Kushina's hand.

Minato reached for Daichi.

The stranger remained outside the glowing pattern.

Kushina stared at him.

"Move."

"The seal may fail because of me."

"It will definitely fail if you stand there."

He hesitated.

Only for a second.

Then stepped into the circle.

The sanctuary spoke.

"Constructed vessel destabilizing transport."

Kushina's chains wrapped around everyone.

Hana.

Minato.

Daichi.

The stranger.

Connecting them.

Holding them as one.

"Try again."

"Survival probability recalculated."

The Voice broke through the first barrier.

Darkness poured into the chamber.

"Sixty-eight percent."

"Good enough."

The transport seal ignited.

The Voice screamed.

The stranger's core pulled toward the open passage.

Hana was dragged in the opposite direction.

Kushina's chains tightened.

She felt every connection.

Every life.

Every fear.

For one impossible moment—

she held all of them.

Not alone.

Minato placed his hand over one of the chains.

His chakra entered the seal.

Daichi did the same.

Hana's trembling fingers closed around another golden link.

Even the stranger reached toward it.

Four different chakras joined Kushina's.

The Guardian Binding blazed.

The Voice recoiled.

The sanctuary disappeared in white light.

They struck the ground outside.

Hard.

Cold morning air filled Kushina's lungs.

The mountain entrance slammed shut behind them.

Ancient seals spread across the cliff.

The earth shook once—

then became still.

Kushina pushed herself upright.

"Hana?"

"I'm here."

"Minato?"

"Fine."

"Daichi?"

A groan answered.

She looked toward the stranger.

He lay several feet away.

Motionless.

The seal lines across his face had gone dark.

For one terrifying second—

Kushina thought the transport had killed him.

Then his chest rose.

Barely.

Alive.

The sanctuary's voice passed faintly through the sealed mountain.

"Temporary containment restored."

"Estimated failure: seven days."

Daichi slowly stood.

"Seven days until the fragment escapes?"

"Correct."

Kushina looked toward the stranger.

Then at Hana's fading mark.

Then toward the direction of the distant coastline.

The First Seal waited beyond the sea.

Seven days away from disaster.

Perhaps less.

Hana sat beside the stranger.

She watched his unfamiliar face.

"What do we call him?"

Kushina looked down at him.

At the person created to be empty.

At the consciousness that should never have existed—

but did.

"We ask him when he wakes up."

Far beneath the mountain—

the Voice whispered through the restored barriers.

"Run."

A pause.

"Bring my body to the First Seal."

Kushina turned away from the cliff.

Her chains slowly disappeared.

"We're not bringing it anything."

The mountain remained silent.

But inside the unconscious stranger's chest—

the vessel core cracked.
