Chapter 72 - Chapter 72 – The Body Without a Soul

The scroll remained open.

The words did not change.

The vessel cannot be freed until the Voice is given a body.

Nobody spoke.

Hana sat against the base of the pedestal.

Her breathing had steadied—

but one hand remained pressed against the faded mark on her neck.

Kushina stayed beside her.

Close enough to catch her if the connection returned.

Far beneath them—

the Voice was silent.

That did not make it feel gone.

Only patient.

Minato read the sentence again.

"A body."

Daichi's gaze remained fixed on the scroll.

"That could mean another vessel."

Hana's fingers tightened against her skin.

"No."

Kushina looked at him sharply.

"We are not moving it into someone else."

"I didn't say we should."

"You were thinking it."

"I was considering what the words mean."

"They mean we find another way."

Daichi met her eyes.

"Then let the archive explain it."

Kushina looked down at the open scroll.

"How?"

No answer came from the sanctuary.

She raised her voice.

"You recognized me as the primary heir."

The blue lights continued to glow.

"You showed us the First Seal."

Silence.

"And now Hana's life is connected to something trapped beneath this place."

A pause.

"So stop speaking in riddles."

Minato glanced toward the ceiling.

"I think you're arguing with the building again."

"It worked last time."

The sanctuary finally responded.

"Clarification requires Guardian authorization."

Kushina crossed her arms.

"I used the Guardian Binding."

"Correct."

"Then authorize me."

"Guardian trial incomplete."

Her eyes narrowed.

"What trial?"

The stone beneath the pedestal shifted.

A narrow compartment opened.

Inside it rested a small silver blade.

Kushina stared at it.

"…no."

Daichi stepped closer.

"It may only need blood."

"That is always what mysterious ancient knives need."

The blade was thin.

Shorter than a kunai.

Uzumaki spirals covered the handle.

No rust touched the metal.

Minato examined it without lifting it.

"It isn't a weapon."

Daichi nodded.

"A seal key."

Hana looked at Kushina.

"You don't have to do it."

Kushina glanced at the mark on her neck.

"Yes."

A pause.

"I do."

She picked up the blade.

Kurama shifted inside her.

"…careful…"

Kushina almost laughed.

"You've said that a lot lately."

"…and you continue to ignore me…"

"Then give better warnings."

He growled.

But he did not tell her to stop.

Kushina pressed the blade lightly against her palm.

A thin line opened across her skin.

One drop of blood fell onto the scroll.

The parchment absorbed it immediately.

Red light spread through the ancient symbols.

The entire chamber pulsed.

A circle formed beneath Kushina's feet.

Golden chains appeared around her—

faint.

Transparent.

Not created by her chakra.

Memories.

Guardians standing where she stood now.

Red-haired men and women.

Young.

Old.

Wounded.

Afraid.

Each one holding the same blade.

Each one offering the same blood.

The sanctuary spoke.

"State the Guardian oath."

Kushina stared upward.

"I don't know it."

The scroll shifted.

Words appeared across the page.

Not written in ink.

Carved in light.

She read them silently.

Then once more.

Daichi watched her.

"What does it say?"

Kushina lifted her head.

Her voice carried through the chamber.

"I will not confuse possession with protection."

The lights brightened.

"I will not turn the suffering of another into a weapon."

The chains surrounding her became clearer.

"I will carry what must be carried."

A pause.

"But I will not carry it alone."

Minato looked toward her.

Hana's eyes filled with quiet recognition.

Kushina continued.

"Power will answer to purpose."

"Seals will answer to life."

"And no prisoner will be forgotten simply because the prison remains closed."

The chamber shook gently.

Not from danger.

Acceptance.

Kushina closed her bleeding hand.

"I accept the burden."

A pause.

"But I reject the cruelty that created it."

Silence.

Then—

"Guardian authorization confirmed."

The scroll opened farther.

Several pages unfolded across the pedestal.

Diagrams appeared.

Human shapes.

Chakra networks.

Seal structures.

But the figures were hollow.

No organs.

No bones.

No faces.

Kushina leaned closer.

"What are those?"

The sanctuary answered.

"Constructed vessels."

Minato studied the diagrams.

"They aren't human."

"Correct."

Daichi's gaze moved across the seals.

"Artificial bodies."

Hana looked between them.

"You can create a body?"

Daichi's expression remained serious.

"The Uzumaki could create temporary chakra forms."

"Clones?" Kushina asked.

"No."

Minato pointed toward the hollow center of the diagram.

"A clone copies a living chakra network."

A pause.

"This has none."

The image changed.

A body formed from layers of seal paper.

Mineral dust.

Chakra-infused threads.

At its center—

a dark, empty sphere.

"A constructed vessel contains no independent consciousness."

The sanctuary continued.

"It cannot desire."

"It cannot fear."

"It cannot be influenced."

Kushina looked at Hana.

"So the Voice can be moved into one of these."

"Correct."

"And Hana will be free?"

A pause.

Too long.

Kushina's expression hardened.

"Answer."

"If extraction succeeds."

Hana looked away.

Kushina tightened her jaw.

"What happens if it fails?"

"The Voice may divide again."

Minato's eyes narrowed.

"Creating another fragment."

"Correct."

Daichi studied the body's central seal.

"Or it could remain connected to Hana."

"Correct."

"And if the artificial vessel cannot contain it?"

The sanctuary's voice remained calm.

"Manifestation will occur."

The dark presence beneath the sanctuary shifted.

One slow impact struck the barriers.

The pedestal trembled.

Hana pressed her hand against her neck.

Kushina immediately turned toward her.

"Can you hear it?"

Hana hesitated.

"No."

Another impact.

Her expression tightened.

"Not words."

"What, then?"

Hana closed her eyes.

"Hunger."

Kurama growled within Kushina.

"…it knows you are discussing extraction…"

Kushina looked inward.

"Can it hear us?"

"…not through the walls…"

A pause.

"…through her…"

Kushina stared at the faded seal.

"So as long as Hana carries the link—"

"…the Voice knows what she knows…"

Hana opened her eyes.

Fear passed across her face.

"It knows about the artificial body."

"Yes," Kushina said quietly.

"It does."

The scroll revealed another page.

A list of required materials appeared.

Minato read each symbol carefully.

"Chakra-conductive paper."

"Binding thread."

"Powdered stone from the original seal."

Daichi pointed toward the final line.

"And a vessel core."

Kushina frowned.

"What is that?"

The sanctuary projected an image above the pedestal.

A small sphere.

White.

Smooth.

Covered in thousands of tiny seal markings.

"A vessel core stabilizes identity during transfer."

Hana stared at it.

"Whose identity?"

"Yours," Kushina said.

The sanctuary corrected her.

"Both."

Silence.

Daichi looked up.

"The core separates Hana's consciousness from the fragment."

"Correct."

Minato continued studying the diagram.

"Without it, the extraction could pull parts of her memories into the artificial vessel."

Hana's face went pale.

"Parts?"

The sanctuary displayed fragments of light moving from one human outline into another.

Memories.

Emotions.

Pieces of identity.

"Separation without stabilization may result in loss."

Kushina's voice lowered.

"What kind of loss?"

"Memory."

A pause.

"Chakra function."

Another.

"Self-recognition."

Hana's breathing became uneven again.

Kushina reached for her hand.

"We won't do it without the core."

Daichi looked toward the projected sphere.

"Where is it?"

The sanctuary went silent.

Kushina waited.

No answer.

"Where is the vessel core?"

Blue symbols appeared above them.

"Storage chamber seven."

A section of the wall illuminated.

Kushina stood.

"Good."

"Storage chamber seven is empty."

She stopped.

The light above the wall changed.

A record appeared.

An open chamber.

Broken seals.

An empty stone cradle.

Daichi approached the image.

"When was it taken?"

"Exact date unavailable."

Minato studied the damaged formulas.

"Before the sanctuary closed?"

"Correct."

"By the organization?" Kushina asked.

"Unknown."

Hana stared at the empty cradle.

"They knew about the vessel."

Everyone turned toward her.

Hana swallowed.

"I heard them discussing something."

"While you were imprisoned?" Daichi asked.

She nodded.

"They called it the shell."

Minato's expression changed.

"What did they say?"

"That it was incomplete."

A pause.

"That it could hold chakra…"

Her voice weakened.

"…but not a soul."

Kushina looked toward the hollow body in the diagram.

"A body without a consciousness."

Hana nodded slowly.

"They said the shell kept rejecting every subject."

Daichi's gaze hardened.

"Because they were putting living people inside it."

A memory passed behind Hana's eyes.

Kushina saw the change immediately.

"What else?"

Hana shook her head.

"I don't know."

"Hana."

"I only heard pieces."

She pressed her fingers against her temple.

"One of them said they had finally found a compatible source."

The Voice struck the barriers below again.

Harder.

The lights flickered.

Kushina held Hana's hand tighter.

"What source?"

Hana looked at her.

"Bijuu chakra."

Kurama went still.

Minato turned toward Kushina.

"The stranger at the meeting."

She remembered him.

The impossible pressure.

The way Kurama had fallen silent.

The way the hunters themselves had retreated.

He had not attacked them immediately.

He had looked at Kushina—

as though searching for something inside her.

"He wanted Kurama," she whispered.

Daichi's eyes moved toward the projected vessel core.

"What if he wasn't searching for Kurama?"

Kushina looked at him.

"What else would he want?"

"The second signature."

Silence.

The scroll displayed the three marks again.

Uzumaki chakra.

Bijuu chakra.

A compatible vessel.

Minato spoke quietly.

"The organization created Hana as the third signature."

Daichi nodded.

"They may have used the stolen core to create the body."

Kushina's stomach tightened.

"And the stranger carries Bijuu chakra?"

"Perhaps not naturally."

Hana looked toward the diagram.

"They put it inside him."

A low growl rolled through Kushina's mind.

"…not mine…"

She closed her eyes.

"What?"

Kurama's chakra shifted behind the seal.

"…the presence on him was familiar…"

A pause.

"…but it was not my chakra…"

Kushina's breath slowed.

"One of the others?"

Kurama did not answer immediately.

"…pieces…"

"What pieces?"

His voice became lower.

"…stolen from more than one…"

Kushina repeated the words aloud.

"The stranger carries chakra taken from multiple Bijuu."

The chamber fell silent.

Minato's expression remained calm—

but his eyes sharpened.

"That would explain why his presence felt unstable."

Daichi looked toward the empty storage record.

"And why the artificial body accepted him."

Hana stared at the hollow figure projected above the scroll.

"He is the shell."

The sanctuary immediately responded.

"Statement requires verification."

Kushina raised an eyebrow.

"Can you verify it?"

"Searching archived signatures."

Light moved through the chamber walls.

Across old formulas.

Through records that had remained asleep for decades.

Then—

the image of the empty vessel core changed.

A chakra pattern appeared beside it.

Dark lines.

Multiple colors twisted together.

Red.

Blue.

Purple.

Gold.

Unstable.

Familiar.

Kushina had felt that exact pressure at the meeting.

The sanctuary spoke.

"Vessel core signature located."

Everyone froze.

"Where?" Daichi asked.

A map formed above the pedestal.

Not the ancient map of the First Seal.

A current one.

The mountain.

The sanctuary.

The surrounding forest.

A single dark point pulsed near the sealed entrance.

Close.

Far too close.

Hana slowly stood.

"He followed us."

Daichi drew his kunai.

Minato placed one hand near his seal tags.

Kushina felt Kurama rise behind the bars.

Every tail lifted.

Every trace of exhaustion disappeared.

"…he did not follow…"

Kushina stared at the dark point.

"What do you mean?"

Kurama's growl filled her mind.

"…he was waiting…"

A heavy knock echoed from the entrance.

The sanctuary lights turned crimson.

Another knock.

Slow.

Controlled.

Then a third.

The same rhythm as the Voice below.

Hana's faded mark began to burn.

She gasped.

Kushina caught her.

The sanctuary spoke.

"Constructed vessel detected."

Stone cracked around the main entrance.

"Vessel core confirmed."

The dark point on the map stopped moving.

Directly outside the door.

A familiar voice passed through the mountain.

Calm.

Patient.

Almost human.

"You found what I need."

Kushina's chains burst into existence.

The ancient entrance began to open.

And beneath their feet—

the Voice laughed.
