Chapter 26 - After the End

Three weeks later.

The city was alive again.

Not the same.

Never the same.

The old system's silence had disappeared.

No invisible commands.

No watchers hiding in the corners.

No fear of being corrected.

People were learning how to exist without someone else holding the strings.

And surprisingly—

it was messy.

Very messy.

Lucien stood in the middle of a crowded street, watching someone accidentally activate their contract ability and create a fountain of floating lights.

He stared.

Then looked at Zayden.

"Is this normal now?"

Zayden glanced at the floating lights.

"I don't know."

Lucien sighed.

"Wonderful."

A pause.

"We saved the world and nobody gave us a manual."

Zayden almost smiled.

Almost.

Aria walked beside them, looking around.

For the first time—

she wasn't watching for threats.

She was just looking.

People.

Buildings.

Life.

Simple things she had never allowed herself to notice.

Zayden noticed.

"You're quiet."

She looked at him.

"I'm thinking."

"That's dangerous."

A tiny smile appeared.

"Your jokes are getting better."

He looked offended.

"That was not a joke."

"It was."

"It wasn't."

Lucien walked ahead.

"I'm witnessing progress."

Both looked at him.

"What?"

"You two are having normal conversations."

He pointed dramatically.

"Terrifying."

Aria ignored him.

But Zayden noticed something.

She was different.

Not weaker.

Not softer.

Just…

free.

And maybe that was the biggest change.

They reached the old Order headquarters.

The building remained.

But the symbols had been removed.

The doors were open.

No guards.

No restrictions.

Kael stood outside.

Waiting.

Zayden looked at him.

"You're still here."

Kael nodded.

"Someone has to rebuild."

Zayden glanced at the empty building.

"Without the system?"

"Yes."

A pause.

"Without control."

That was the hardest part.

Kael looked at Aria.

"You were right."

She raised an eyebrow.

"About?"

"That the world needed a choice."

A quiet moment passed.

Coming from Kael—

that was almost an apology.

Almost.

Lucien looked between them.

"Everyone is becoming emotionally complicated."

Kael ignored him.

Of course.

Zayden walked inside.

The old meeting room was different.

The huge system screens were gone.

The walls were empty.

A place built for orders had become a place for discussion.

Interesting.

Aria entered behind him.

Then stopped.

There was something on the table.

A file.

Old.

Dusty.

Waiting.

Zayden noticed.

"What is that?"

Kael's expression changed.

"I don't know."

Aria stepped closer.

She opened it.

Inside—

pages.

Records.

From before the system.

Before the contracts.

Before even her.

Zayden picked up one page.

A single sentence was written:

THE FIRST CONTRACT WAS NOT THE BEGINNING.

Silence.

Aria turned another page.

More words.

THE SOURCE WAS FOUND.

Her expression changed.

Zayden looked at her.

"What?"

She didn't answer.

She kept reading.

Then—

stopped.

Her face went completely still.

"What does it say?" Zayden asked.

Slowly, she turned the page toward them.

A name.

A name written thousands of years ago.

A name that shouldn't exist.

Because it was his.

ZAYDEN CROSS.

No one spoke.

Lucien's expression finally lost its humor.

Kael stepped closer.

"That's impossible."

Zayden stared.

His own name.

In a record older than him.

Aria looked at him.

And for the first time since they met—

she didn't know the answer.

A cold feeling passed through the room.

Because they thought the mystery was over.

They were wrong.

The old system had hidden one final truth.

The contract didn't choose Zayden by accident.

It had been waiting for him.

For a very long time.
