Chapter 28 - The Man Who Existed Before Himself

The voice disappeared.

But the words remained.

Welcome back.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

Because everyone was thinking the same thing.

Welcome back to what?

Zayden stared at the broken contract piece floating above the box.

His reflection appeared on its surface.

But for a second—

it wasn't his reflection.

A different expression.

A different version.

Older.

Tired.

Like someone who had carried the weight of the world and lost.

Then it vanished.

Zayden stepped back.

"What was that?"

Aria didn't answer.

She looked shaken.

Actually shaken.

That scared him more.

"Aria."

Her eyes met his.

"I don't know."

Again.

The words he never expected from her.

The woman who knew secrets hidden beneath centuries.

She didn't know.

The woman who had faced the Origin.

She didn't know.

Lucien slowly approached the box.

"I have a question."

Everyone looked at him.

"How many impossible things do we have to discover before we admit the universe is just making things up?"

No one replied.

Because honestly—

it was becoming difficult to disagree.

Kael picked up the old document.

His eyes moved across the records.

"This symbol…"

He looked at Aria.

"It existed before the system."

She nodded.

"Yes."

A pause.

"But it was erased."

"Why?"

Her fingers tightened.

"Because whoever carried it disappeared."

Zayden looked at the broken piece.

"And that was me?"

Aria didn't answer.

The silence was enough.

The woman who brought the box finally spoke.

"My name is Elara."

Kael looked at her.

"Who are you?"

Elara looked at Zayden.

"A messenger."

"For who?"

A pause.

"The previous anchor."

Zayden frowned.

"You said that already."

"Yes."

She looked at the broken piece.

"But I didn't say they were gone."

The room froze.

Aria's expression changed.

"No."

Elara looked at her.

"You know."

Aria's voice became quiet.

"The anchor cannot survive after transferring the connection."

Elara nodded.

"Normally."

A pause.

"But he wasn't normal."

Zayden felt a strange pressure in his chest.

"Who was he?"

Elara looked at him.

"You."

Silence.

Again.

The same impossible answer.

Zayden clenched his jaw.

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one."

She opened another page.

A record.

A story.

Not of a hero.

Not of a ruler.

Of a person.

The first anchor rejected control.

The second rejected sacrifice.

The final choice was to be reborn without memory.

Zayden read the words.

Slowly.

His hands tightened.

"Reborn."

Aria whispered.

The pieces connected.

"The system erased you."

Zayden looked at her.

"Why?"

Her answer came slowly.

"Because you tried to change it before."

A pause.

"And failed."

The room became colder.

Lucien stopped joking.

Kael looked at the floor.

Even he understood.

The old system wasn't new.

The rebellion wasn't new.

Zayden had already fought this battle.

Before.

Zayden stared at the page.

"Why don't I remember?"

Elara answered:

"Because the system gave you a new life."

A pause.

"Without the burden."

Zayden laughed quietly.

Not happily.

"So I spent my whole life being free…"

He looked at the mark.

"Because someone decided I needed another chance."

Aria stepped closer.

"Zayden."

He looked at her.

Her expression softened.

Not pity.

Understanding.

"Does it change anything?"

He was silent.

Because that was the real question.

If he had been someone else before…

If he had failed before…

If this was his second chance…

Was his choice really his?

The mark pulsed.

The broken piece reacted.

And a memory hit him.

Not a vision.

A feeling.

Standing before the original system.

A younger Aria.

A version of himself.

And a promise.

A promise he had made.

"If I fail…"

His own voice.

From another time.

"I'll try again."

The memory vanished.

Zayden stood frozen.

Aria watched him.

"You remembered."

He nodded slowly.

"One thing."

"What?"

He looked at her.

"The promise."

A pause.

"I made one."

The room waited.

Zayden's voice lowered.

"I promised I would find another way."

Aria's eyes widened.

Because she understood.

The old Zayden hadn't been trying to destroy the system.

He had been trying to save everyone.

And failed.

The broken contract piece floated higher.

The symbol changed.

A new message appeared.

Not a command.

A warning.

THE SOURCE IS WAKING.

The lights flickered.

The city trembled.

And from somewhere beyond the world—

something answered.

Not the Origin.

Not the First Entity.

Something older.

Something that had been waiting.
