Chapter 68 - No One Touches Those Documents

It had been exactly one week since William's jet had disappeared into the gray New York skyline, and the silence on the executive floor was starting to feel like a physical weight.

Surprisingly, the world hadn't ended. 

In fact, I'd been forced to step out of my comfort zone just to keep from losing my mind in the quiet. By the time I forced myself to have lunch in the company's café twice in a row, I had successfully made a total of three actual friends. 

There was Britney from IT, who spoke almost exclusively in sarcasm; Trent from Legal, who was surprisingly funny for someone who spent his life in fine print; and Amy from HR, who was the only person in the building who could match my pace when it came to a morning coffee run. 

It was nice, honestly—having people to relate with outside the heavy, high-stakes confines of my desk.

But while the social side of my life was expanding, the professional side was becoming a battlefield.
