Kade did not suspect a single thing. He was still far too overwhelmed by the revelation of the Lady's betrayal to notice the General's tiny slip of the tongue.
Kade finally closed his open mouth. He swallowed hard.
He looked at Damon. Kade's eyes were full of confusion and sadness. He had grown to respect the Lady very much over the past week. He had seen her smile, and he had seen her fight for the General.
"But..." Kade spoke softly, his voice full of quiet pain. "But why did the lady betray you, General? Why would she do something so terrible?"
Damon stood silently by the fireplace. He listened to Kade's sad question.
He thought to himself, his mind reaching back into the dark, cold past.
"Why did she do it?" Damon asked himself internally.
He remembered the first year of their marriage. He remembered how he had treated her. He had ignored her and let her felt like she was all alone. He had been a cold, unfeeling tyrant.
