Chapter 79 - Chapter 78The Life Waiting for Me

Mian POV

The house was quiet again.

Not the painful kind of quiet I used to fear.

Just...

Quiet.

Robert had been gone for three days.

Three days.

It felt strange how someone could leave behind so much warmth in such a short time.

I walked into the kitchen expecting to hear him arguing with Kael over coffee or teasing Isle about her cooking.

Instead...

There was only the sound of the kettle beginning to boil.

For a brief second, I felt that familiar ache in my chest.

Then my phone vibrated.

Robert: Did you draw today?

I smiled before replying.

Mian: I was about to.

A second later, another message arrived.

Robert: Good. Don't make me fly back just to check.

I laughed.

The house no longer felt empty.

Because the connection hadn't ended.

It had simply changed.

---

Isle POV

Watching Mian smile at her phone would have worried me once.

Now it simply made me happy.

"Robert?" I asked.

She looked up.

"How did you know?"

"You have your 'someone said something ridiculous' smile."

"I have one of those?"

"Oh, definitely."

She rolled her eyes.

"I'll have to work on hiding it."

"No."

I smiled.

"Don't."

---

Kael POV

The company board meeting was scheduled for Monday morning.

For years, Mian had attended every meeting.

Never late.

Never absent.

Never taking a day off.

Today...

She wasn't there.

Instead, Kael stood before the board members.

One of them frowned.

"Where is Ms. Mian?"

Kael answered calmly.

"On leave."

Another director looked surprised.

"She's never taken leave."

"I know."

"Is she unwell?"

Kael smiled slightly.

"No."

"She's finally resting."

The room fell silent.

No one argued.

For the first time...

The company continued without demanding everything from Mian.

Exactly as it should.

---

Mian POV

I spent the afternoon in the sunroom.

The sketchbook that had once intimidated me was now almost half full.

Trees.

Old streets.

Coffee mugs.

Rain against windows.

The garden.

Pieces of ordinary life.

I was shading the branches of an oak tree when the Husband knocked gently.

"Busy?"

"A little."

"May I interrupt?"

I smiled.

"You already have."

He laughed before stepping inside.

He looked around at the sketches spread across the table.

"I never knew."

"Knew what?"

"That you were this talented."

Heat rose to my cheeks.

"I'm still learning again."

He picked up one drawing carefully.

It showed the family sitting together during game night.

He stared at it for a long moment.

"You drew us..."

"I wanted to remember this."

He looked at me.

"You know..."

He hesitated.

"I've spent months apologizing."

"You have."

"And I probably deserve to."

I closed the sketchbook.

"But?"

"But..."

He smiled sadly.

"I'd like to spend the rest of my life making better memories instead."

My eyes filled unexpectedly.

"I'd like that too."

Without thinking...

I hugged him.

Not because either of us needed forgiveness.

Because we had finally found peace.

---

The Husband POV

As Mian walked away, he quietly wiped at his eyes.

She hadn't called him by name.

She hadn't thanked him.

She had simply hugged him.

Some wounds healed through words.

Others...

Healed through moments like this.

---

Evening

The family gathered for dinner.

No special occasion.

Just another ordinary evening.

Kael was trying to cook.

Which turned out to be a terrible decision.

Smoke drifted from the kitchen.

Isle hurried to rescue the vegetables.

The Husband opened every window.

Mian leaned against the counter laughing.

Kael looked offended.

"I followed the recipe."

Isle looked into the pan.

"The recipe did not ask you to burn garlic."

"It was... enthusiastic garlic."

Everyone burst into laughter.

Mian laughed so hard tears formed in her eyes.

Not tears of sadness.

Just laughter.

She hadn't realized how much she had missed that feeling.

---

Late Night – Mian POV

Before going to bed, I opened the last page of my sketchbook.

Instead of drawing...

I began writing.

Not a letter.

Not a journal.

Just thoughts.

"For years, I believed healing meant forgetting."

"I was wrong."

"Healing isn't forgetting the people who hurt you."

"It's remembering that they don't get to decide who you become."

I stopped writing.

Read the words once.

Then closed the sketchbook.

Outside...

The rain had finally stopped.

The moon shone brightly over the garden.

For the first time in what felt like forever...

Tomorrow didn't frighten me.

It excited me.

---

Final Scene

Far away, in another country, Robert finished work and checked his phone before going to sleep.

A photo message waited.

It was Mian's newest sketch.

The old oak tree.

Sunlight filtering through its branches.

At the bottom she had written:

"I finished it."

Robert smiled and replied with only three words.

"I knew you would."

Thousands of miles separated them.

But neither of them felt the distance anymore.

Because true friendship...

Didn't disappear with miles.

It simply learned new ways to stay close.

As the lights went out in two different homes beneath the same night sky...

A new chapter of Mian's life quietly began.

One built not on fear.

But on hope.
