Later, on the plane, Ray said cheerfully:
"I know what you were trying to do, but it won't work."
"You only say that because you can't see her. Believe me, there's something to see and something to hold onto."
"I don't doubt it. Even my clouded vision doesn't stop me from seeing that. But we both clearly heard that she's far more interested in you," Ray chuckled.
"I'm sure that if you seriously went after her, you'd have no trouble bringing her back to the light side."
"I know what you're trying to do, but I don't need it. Yes, I was interested, but no more than that. Now I have you. Besides, I don't want to expand my social circle unnecessarily."
From Ray's tone, Lily understood he was serious. Thinking for a moment, she said:
"Okay, I guess I got a little carried away. I was a bad girl, but Daddy can always punish me."
Hearing this, Ray flicked her on the forehead. At her offended look, he replied:
"That was your just punishment."
After dropping off their bags, Ray and Lily headed to the hospital.
Seeing the guests, Rosie was very happy. Even though the old woman had insisted they not be told about her hospitalization, Amy had called anyway. Ray decided to give them some time alone and stepped out so they could talk.
Gently hugging her great-granddaughter, Rosie said:
"I don't have much time left, but you shouldn't be sad. I've lived a long life, with both joys and sorrows. But I'm very proud of the person you've become. My only regret is that I won't see your children."
"You have the same good taste as your mother. Even though your father's relatives were against their relationship, he himself turned out to be a very good man."
"Call Ray, I have something to say to him."
Entering the room, Ray sat beside the bed. Smiling tenderly at him, the old woman said:
"I know you're tormented by fears, but I have no doubt: you'll be a good father, and Lily will be happy with you. Honestly, I don't know how to express my gratitude for everything you've done for our family."
"You don't need to thank me. Lily's family is my family, so there's no need."
"I'll die soon, but now she has you and your mother. So I'm sure she'll be able to cope with it."
