Chapter 34 - Chapter 34

Golden Memories and Heavy Shadows

The frantic pace of the Geneva mission had officially ground to a halt. Recognizing the immense physical and mental toll of what they had just survived, the Assistant Director—the second-in-command of the HSS—granted them a mandatory three-week leave. Because of their roaring success in keeping the President's son safe, they had both received major promotions, which came with a massive perk: their own private, spacious quarters within the agency complex.

Finally having a moment of absolute privacy away from the rest of the agency, they retreated to their new space. To celebrate, Hadrian decided he was going to cook a grand celebratory dish. However, the kitchen quickly turned into a chaotic battlefield of flour and flying utensils.

As Hadrian fumbled with the ingredients, they began reminiscing about the early days of their training at the HSS, laughing about how far they had come. They vividly remembered the time they had landed themselves in massive trouble, earning a grueling punishment that forced them to climb a steep, brutal mountain. At the time, they had cursed every step, but reaching the peak and witnessing that breathtaking, endless view had made it all worth it.

Stella—still presenting perfectly to Hadrian as his male partner and best friend—looked at him as he accidentally knocked a spoon onto the floor, his brow furrowed in intense concentration over a mixing bowl. Her mind drifted back to the most defining moment of their bond—the day Hadrian had literally risked his life to rescue her from a horrific car accident, pulling her from the twisted metal just before it was too late.

A familiar, beautiful song began playing softly on the radio in the corner. Listening to the lyrics, the sheer weight of everything Hadrian had sacrificed for her over the years hit her all at once. An overwhelming wave of gratitude and pure emotion washed over her. She knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that she had the best friend in the entire world.

Moved by pure impulse and emotion, Stella stepped forward and threw her arms around him in a sudden, tight hug.

Hadrian, completely caught off guard by the sudden burst of affection from his usually stoic male partner while holding a freshly opened bag of flour, jolted in surprise. "Whoa—buddy?!"

In his startle, the bag slipped from his hands, exploded against the counter, and sent a massive, white cloud erupting directly into his face.

When the cloud cleared, Hadrian stood frozen, completely coated from head to toe, looking like a panicked ghost with only his blinking eyes visible. Stella took one look at his flour-covered face and burst into unstoppable, breathless laughter. Hadrian blinked through the white powder, a slow, defeated grin breaking across his face before he started laughing right along with her, wiping a clump of flour from his nose.

After cleaning up the hilarious disaster, the time came for them to actually start their vacation. They shared a warm, meaningful goodbye as Hadrian left to spend his three weeks with his family, while Stella packed her bags to head to the coastal sanctuary of her caregiver, Aunt Melissa.
