Chapter 39 - Chapter 39

The Dark Shadow of the Past

"Those people you saw at the edge of the property a few weeks ago, Stella..." Melissa's voice dropped to a heavy, strained whisper. "Those were the very same 'old friends' from my youth. They have finally tracked me down, believing I still possess something left for them. But it isn't just the family fortune they are after. It's much worse."

Melissa leaned her head against the high back of the balcony chair, staring blindly out at the dark horizon. "In our university days, my wealth and connections blindly dragged me into their darkest schemes. They got involved in trafficking illegal, high-end narcotics, selling them directly to teenagers from incredibly wealthy families in other countries to make millions. Because of my family's shipping lines and international connections, I was the one who inadvertently facilitated the transport of those drugs. I didn't realize the horror of what I was doing until it was too late."

She swallowed hard, a wave of profound sorrow crossing her face. "The moment I discovered the truth, the absolute devastation those drugs were causing to those young lives, I was horrified. I went to the youth myself, explained the danger, and shut the operation down immediately. But my so-called friends turned on me like rabid dogs. They demanded I hand over the massive stockpile of drugs I still had in my possession. I couldn't give it to the police—if I did, my own connections would have landed me straight in prison. And they knew it. They threatened me, swearing that if I didn't hand the supply over, they would report me to the authorities themselves."

Melissa turned to Stella, tears finally brimming in her faded eyes. "That has been the greatest regret of my entire life. That threat is the exact reason they keep coming back, even now. Those moments you saw them lurking, trying to corner me or bundle me into a vehicle—they want those old hidden supplies, or the wealth from them, to refund their failed empires and make more money. That is the kind of twisted company I kept."

Stella sat in stunned silence, the puzzle pieces of her entire life suddenly slamming into place.

"And that brings me to you, Stella," Melissa said, her hand trembling as she squeezed Stella's fingers. "When I took you in after you survived that horrific shipwreck, you became my entire world. But they found out about you. They tried to use you as bait to get to me, knowing that if they had you, I would hand over absolutely anything to get you back safely. I knew I couldn't protect you alone."

A sudden realization dawned on Stella, her breath catching in her throat.

"That is why I forced you to go to the HSS," Melissa revealed, the truth finally laid bare. "I made you change your identity and disguise yourself as a male operative. I knew the HSS had the highest security standards in the country—there was no way those criminals could ever breach it. Presenting you to the world as a man completely threw them off your scent and confused them entirely. It was the only way to keep you invisible, and the only way to keep you alive. I am so, so sorry I had to put that heavy burden on your shoulders, sweetheart."

Hearing the agonizing sacrifices and the dark history her aunt had carried alone for decades, the dam broke. Stella, the fiercely stoic, unbreakable HSS agent, collapsed inward. Big, hot tears began streaming down her face as she looked at the fragile woman before her. The reality of the diagnosis hit her all over again—there were only two or three months left.

"Please, don't cry, my beautiful girl," Melissa whispered, wiping a tear from Stella's cheek. "There is one last thing I want to do with the time I have left. I want to write a story. I want to document my life, my choices, and my deepest regrets, and use it as a textbook to teach future generations never to make the catastrophic mistakes that I made. For the next two or three months, as I tell you my story day by day, I want you to write it down for me. Will you do that?"

Stella couldn't even speak through her sobbing. She just nodded fiercely, pulling her aunt into a tight, desperate embrace.

That night, Stella couldn't bring herself to leave Melissa's side. She stayed right there in her room, the two of them clinging to one another in the dark, crying until their tears ran dry, drawing whatever comfort they could from the fleeting warmth of each other's presence as the countdown gently began.
