"…Who are you?" Hiro asked cautiously, his voice still unsteady from crying.
There was a brief pause before the person on the other end answered.
[Hi. It's me… Izack.]
Hiro froze. He pulled the phone away from his ear for a split second, staring once again at the unknown number displayed on the screen. It was just a bunch of numbers.
He had never saved Izack's contact. Nor did the man on the other side of the phone ever get the number from Hiro.
"…How did you get my number?" he asked quietly.
[I asked the director for it.]
The answer came so naturally that Hiro couldn't even bring himself to question it. And it was something Izack could have done. After all, the alpha was rather straightforward in such matters.
[I… wanted to make sure you got home safely.]
Neither of them spoke for several seconds.
[…Hiro?] Izack called gently when the beta remained quiet. [Are you alright?]
"I'm fine."
[You don't sound fine.]
