Chapter 33
Lina's POV
My skin crawled at my father's words. He wasn't even trying to hide his hypocrisy. He stood a few steps away, his presence sucking the air out of the space like it always did. That cold, unreadable expression on his face made my stomach twist with old instincts I wished I had buried deeper. Even after everything, after my rejection of Kain, after being thrown into the servant quarters, after all the changes I'd forced upon my fate, one look from him still made me feel like the girl who used to shrink herself to fit his expectations.
Louis hadn't let go of my hand. His grip was warm, steady, almost stubborn. I could feel the protectiveness rolling off him in waves, and for a moment, a small, dangerous part of me wanted to lean into it. To let him shield me from the man who had treated me like a pawn my entire life.
But that was exactly why I couldn't. My father wouldn't back down till he got what he wanted. I knew that much about him.
