Madam Langdale flicked Amabel's nose playfully as she chided her, "How can you lie without batting an eye like that? Umph, are you trying to act this way to stop me from scolding you of your carelessness?" her tone hovering in the range of playfulness to seriousness.
She didn't want to scare her off.
Upon hearing that, Amabel shrunk her neck guiltily as she stuck out her tongue while blinking her eyes at the old lady.
"Aunty Clara, h-how can you say that? Hehe, I don't even remember doing anything wrong. So, why … why are you making it like I am the culprit?" her voice faltered, as she shrank her neck deeper.
Upon seeing that, Madam Langdale for once wanted to give that head a pat, the hard kind but she couldn't bear to.
She sighed deeply as she looked at this gutless little lass and responded with a forced smile, "Yes, my darling is the one who got wronged. How can I bear to accuse you?" exasperatingly saying, knowing that she was right.
