Chapter 42 - Chapter 42: The Emerald Throne

The ancient doors groaned as they opened.

A warm emerald light spilled into the passageway, washing over Emerald like the first rays of dawn. The moment she stepped inside, the doors closed behind her with a deep, echoing boom.

Silence.

She found herself standing in a vast chamber unlike anything she had ever seen.

The walls were carved from living crystal intertwined with enormous roots that pulsed gently with green light. A river of liquid emerald energy flowed around a circular platform at the center of the room.

Upon that platform stood the Emerald Throne.

It was magnificent.

Forged from crystal, ancient wood, and shimmering vines, it seemed less like an object and more like a living being. Every heartbeat Emerald felt echoed from the throne itself.

Boom.

Boom.

Boom.

It had been waiting.

As Emerald took a cautious step forward, hundreds of glowing lights appeared throughout the sanctuary.

One by one, they took shape.

The former kings and queens of the Underworld.

The true rulers.

They stood in complete silence, forming a circle around the throne.

Emerald recognized two of them immediately.

Her mother.

Her father.

Both smiled with unmistakable pride.

"My daughter," Queen Seraphim said gently.

"You've come farther than we ever imagined."

Emerald's eyes filled with tears.

"I wish you were really here."

King Aldren stepped forward.

"In a way..."

He placed a hand over his heart.

"...we never left."

Emerald looked around the chamber.

"Am I supposed to sit on the throne?"

The spirits exchanged knowing smiles.

An elderly queen, crowned with silver leaves, spoke first.

"If ruling were that simple, every tyrant would succeed."

Another king nodded.

"The throne does not give power."

"It reveals the ruler's heart."

Emerald frowned.

"I don't understand."

"You will."

The throne suddenly shone brighter.

Emerald's mark burned.

A wave of emerald energy surged through the sanctuary.

Without warning....

....the floor disappeared beneath her.

She was standing in her childhood bedroom.

Eight years old again.

Her human mother tucked a blanket around her shoulders.

"You've been having those dreams again?" she asked softly.

Young Emerald nodded.

"The scary ones."

Her mother smiled warmly.

"Whatever happens..."

She gently brushed Emerald's hair behind her ear.

"...you'll never face it alone."

The memory dissolved.

She was twelve.

She had fallen from her bicycle.

Her human father knelt beside her.

"You can stay down..."

He offered her his hand.

"...or you can stand up."

Young Emerald took it.

The memory faded.

She was sixteen.

Training with Sara.

Laughing with Sam.

Arguing with Noah before both burst into laughter.

Watching Lyra earn everyone's trust.

Seeing frightened recruits become courageous defenders.

Every memory.

Every friendship.

Every act of kindness.

They flowed around her like a river.

Then...

The throne spoke.

Its voice was neither male nor female.

It sounded like countless voices joined as one.

"What is a queen?"

Emerald closed her eyes.

"A queen protects."

The chamber remained silent.

"What is strength?"

She remembered the warehouse.

The Hall of Oaths.

Her parents.

"My strength comes from the people beside me."

The throne glowed brighter.

"What is sacrifice?"

Emerald thought of her mother.

Her father.

Darius.

Her human parents.

She whispered,

"Giving everything... so that someone else can have hope."

The emerald light intensified until it filled the entire sanctuary.

The spirits smiled.

The throne spoke one final question.

"Who are you?"

Emerald opened her eyes.

She no longer saw the frightened girl abandoned as a baby.

She saw every part of herself.

"I am Emerald."

"The daughter of King Aldren and Queen Seraphina."

"The child of the family who raised me with love."

"The friend who will never abandon those beside her."

"The last royal..."

She took one confident step toward the throne.

"...and the rightful Queen of the Underworld."

The sanctuary erupted with emerald light.

The throne accepted her answer.

Slowly...

Emerald sat upon the Emerald Throne.

The moment she did..... the curse shattered.

A blinding wave of green light burst from her body, racing through every corner of the sanctuary.

The black markings that had wrapped around her royal mark dissolved into glittering fragments.

She gasped.

For the first time in sixteen years...

She felt complete.

Magic surged through her not wild or uncontrollable, but calm and perfectly balanced.

The missing half of her soul returned.

She could feel the heartbeat of the kingdom itself.

The forests.

The rivers.

Everything atlast.
