The Hall of Oaths trembled beneath the weight of two destinies colliding.
Emerald tightened her grip on her father's sword. Fine cracks spread across its emerald blade, catching the green light that poured from her mark.
Across from her, the False Queen smiled.
"You cling to relics of the past," she said. "Just as your parents did."
She raised her obsidian staff.
"I will not make the same mistake."
With a flick of her wrist, dark chains erupted from the shattered floor.
They shot toward Emerald like serpents.
Emerald slashed through the first two, but a third wrapped around her ankle, yanking her off balance.
"Emerald!" Noah shouted.
He sprinted forward, only to be intercepted by two members of the Hollow Guard.
Sara and Sam rushed to his aid, engaging the undead warriors before they could overwhelm him.
Meanwhile, Darius and the loyal Hunters held back the Royal Legion, their formation slowly being pushed toward the chamber walls.
"We can't hold them forever!" one Hunter called.
"You only need to hold them long enough," Darius replied.
His spear flashed through the air, disarming another soldier without taking a life.
Varak roared and slammed into three Hollow Guards, sending them crashing through one of the ancient pillars.
Still, more continued to emerge from the Queen's portals.
They were being outnumbered.
Emerald sliced through the chain around her ankle and rolled to her feet.
The Queen was already upon her.
Their weapons collided.
Green sparks met violet flames.
The impact echoed throughout the chamber.
"You've improved," the Queen admitted.
"But you're still fighting with your heart."
"That's what makes me stronger."
The Queen laughed.
"No."
"It makes you predictable."
She vanished.
Emerald barely had time to react before a blast of dark magic struck her from behind, throwing her across the chamber.
She slid across the stone floor until she collided with the base of a broken pillar.
Pain shot through her ribs.
Her father's sword slipped from her grasp.
The Queen slowly approached.
"You know..." she said quietly, "I did admire your mother."
Emerald looked up.
"She was brilliant."
"So was your father."
The Queen's expression hardened.
"They simply lacked the courage to do what was necessary."
"They had courage," Emerald replied through gritted teeth.
"They refused to become monsters."
The Queen's eyes narrowed.
"You know nothing about sacrifice."
"I sacrificed everything."
She stopped only a few feet away.
"I loved this kingdom."
"I watched your grandfather choose your mother as heir while I stood beside him for centuries."
Emerald frowned.
"You were jealous."
"I was ignored."
The Queen's voice cracked for the first time.
"I protected this kingdom."
"I defended its borders."
"I defeated its enemies."
"And yet..."
"When the crown was passed on..."
"...he looked past me."
Silence settled between them.
For the first time, Emerald didn't see only a tyrant.
She saw someone consumed by bitterness.
"You let your pain become hatred," Emerald said softly.
The Queen's face twisted with anger.
"Do not pity me!"
Dark energy exploded from her body.
The force knocked everyone backward.
Even Varak struggled to remain standing.
The ancient Guardian looked toward Emerald.
"Your Majesty!"
Emerald met his gaze.
"The Throne..." Varak called. "It is calling to you."
At first, she heard nothing.
Then...
A faint heartbeat.
Deep beneath the chamber.
Slow.
Ancient.
Alive.
Boom.
Boom.
Boom.
The Emerald Throne.
It was close.
Much closer than anyone had realized.
Elara gasped.
"The Hall of Oaths..."
She looked around the collapsing chamber.
"It was built directly above the sanctuary."
The Queen's expression changed instantly.
"No."
She slammed her staff into the floor.
The stone cracked open.
A spiral staircase hidden beneath centuries of rock was revealed.
Far below...
A brilliant emerald light illuminated the darkness.
The Throne had awakened.
Everyone stopped fighting.
Hunters.
Shadow Guard.
Recruits.
Even the Hollow Guard stood motionless.
All eyes turned toward the staircase.
The Queen recovered first.
She lunged toward it.
"Stop her!" Darius shouted.
The loyal Hunters charged.
The Royal Legion met them head-on.
Steel clashed once again.
Noah reached Emerald and helped her to her feet.
"Go!"
"What about all of you?"
"We'll hold them."
Sara stepped beside him, blood running down her arm.
"We didn't come this far for you to stop now."
Sam smiled despite his injuries.
"Go become the queen."
Lyra drew her daggers and faced the advancing Shadow Guard.
"We'll buy you the time."
Emerald looked at each of them.
These weren't just allies anymore.
They were family.
She nodded.
"I'll come back."
"You'd better," Noah said with a grin.
Before Emerald could descend the staircase, the Queen turned back one last time.
"You truly believe they'll survive?"
She waved her hand.
The portals behind her expanded.
Dozens more Hollow Guards began stepping through.
The loyal Hunters faltered.
Darius looked at the overwhelming force.
Then at Emerald.
Without hesitation, he removed the emerald pendant hanging around his neck.
He tossed it to her.
She caught it instinctively.
"My father gave me that," he said.
"He told me to protect the true heir if she ever returned."
Emerald stared at him in shock.
"He knew my father?"
Darius nodded.
"He saved my life."
Then he turned back toward the battlefield.
"I've been repaying that debt ever since."
He lifted his spear.
"Hunters!"
The loyal soldiers answered as one.
"With me!"
They charged the advancing Hollow Guard.
Emerald's eyes filled with tears.
Noah gently placed a hand on her shoulder.
"Go."
She took one last look at her friends.
Then she turned and ran down the ancient staircase toward the Emerald Throne.
Behind her...
The sounds of battle echoed through the Hall of Oaths.
Ahead...
The light of the throne grew brighter with every step.
The moment she reached the bottom, the enormous stone doors of the sanctuary slowly began to open on their own.
Something inside was waiting for her.
And it knew her name.
