Chapter 24: The Distance Between Us
The palace felt familiar.
But nothing within it felt the same anymore.
Helena moved quietly through the corridors, her steps careful, her posture lower than before. Not because she was weak but because she had chosen to be smaller.
Safer.
Invisible.
Whatever had happened the night before… she could not explain it. And she could not risk anyone noticing.
So she returned to what she knew.
Silence.
Obedience.
A servant's place.
From a distance, Emily watched her carefully.
Not with suspicion.
But with curiosity.
Something about Helena had shifted. Not her behavior alone but the air around her. Like something had awakened… and was now carefully being hidden.
Emily did not speak.
Not yet.
---
At the palace gates, the doors opened.
Kira returned.
He walked in with controlled steps, composed as always but something in his expression had changed since he left.
He had not expected to come back so soon.
But he did not question why he had.
The moment he entered, he saw her.
Helena.
Dressed simply. Standing at a respectful distance like a servant should.
"Your Highness," she greeted softly, bowing her head.
Kira paused.
Just for a second.
That title again.
It created the exact barrier he had been trying to rebuild.
He nodded once.
"Helena."
His voice was calm. Controlled.
Nothing more.
Nothing less.
But inside him, the memory stirred.
The accident.
The fall.
The kiss.
It had not been planned.
It had not been meant to happen.
But it had.
And before he left the palace, he had already made his decision.
He had apologized.
Not because he regretted the moment exactly…
but because he understood what it could become if they allowed it.
So he created distance.
Not cruelty.
Not rejection.
Control.
---
Helena kept her gaze lowered.
She noticed it immediately.
He was different.
Not just in presence—but in how carefully he spoke to her now.
Like something had been placed between them.
Something invisible.
And heavy.
"I've returned on palace matters," Kira said briefly.
"I understand, Your Highness," she replied.
Short.
Formal.
Correct.
Neither of them said anything more.
And that was how it stayed.
---
Emily stepped forward then.
"Welcome back, Your Highness," she said politely.
Kira nodded.
"Emily."
Her eyes shifted between them again.
Just a glance.
But enough.
Helena stood slightly behind, perfectly composed.
But Emily noticed something subtle.
The way Helena held herself.
Not broken.
Not normal.
Carefully contained.
Like something inside her had to be hidden at all costs.
---
Kira began to walk past them.
But as he did, his steps slowed slightly.
Not enough for anyone to notice.
Except Helena.
For a moment, he hesitated.
Like he wanted to say something.
But didn't.
Instead, he simply continued walking.
Leaving silence behind him.
---
Helena exhaled softly once he was gone.
Only then did she allow herself to breathe fully.
Her hands tightened at her sides.
She had to stay careful.
She could not afford attention.
Not from Emily.
Not from Kira.
Not from anyone.
Because something had changed inside her.
And she still did not understand what it was.
---
Far ahead, Kira stopped alone in a quiet corridor.
His expression tightened slightly.
He should not be thinking about it.
The kiss.
The moment.
The mistake-if it could even be called that.
He had done what was right.
Created distance.
Protected order.
But why did it feel like something was still unsettled?
Behind him, the palace remained quiet.
Behind him, Helena remained distant.
And between them…
something unspoken remained alive.
Even in silence.
Even in separation.
Even in restraint.
---
And in another part of the palace, Emily finally stopped walking.
Her eyes narrowed slightly.
Now she was certain.
Something had changed.
And no one in the palace was ready for what it meant.
