Chapter 91: Klaus Returns
POV: Caroline Forbes
Klaus Mikaelson returns to Mystic Falls after four months in New Orleans, and Caroline's heart does complicated things she refuses to acknowledge.
He finds Sam first, approaching the town square where Sam's coordinating Connor's security rotation with characteristic tactical precision.
"Sam Barton," Klaus announces with theatrical flair. "The Clone Sovereign. Your reputation has spread across supernatural communities—New Orleans knows of the human who united Originals and forged multi-species alliances. Impressive accomplishment."
Klaus extends his hand, and Sam shakes it cautiously. "You're here about Shane and Silas."
"Ancient monsters are my specialty," Klaus confirms. "Plus, I've missed this charming little town. And certain residents."
His eyes find Caroline across the square, and she feels the weight of his attention like physical force.
Later, he corners her at the Mystic Grill with artwork wrapped in protective cloth.
"For you," Klaus says, unwrapping a portrait that steals Caroline's breath.
It's her—captured in oils with such precision and artistry that Caroline barely recognizes herself. Not because it's inaccurate, but because Klaus painted her as he sees her: strong, beautiful, radiant with life and determination.
"I thought of you constantly in New Orleans," Klaus admits. "The city's grandeur dims compared to you, Caroline Forbes."
Caroline accepts the painting because refusing would be rude, but she reinforces boundaries firmly. "Klaus, I'm with Sam. You know this. We've discussed this."
Klaus's smile carries centuries of patience. "For now. But when you're ready for eternity, for adventure beyond this small town, I'll be waiting. However long it takes."
It's both threat and promise, and Caroline hates that part of her finds it flattering.
The war council convenes at the Salvatore boarding house that evening: Klaus, Elijah, Sam, Bonnie, Damon, Stefan, Connor via video call from his hospital bed, and Caroline taking notes.
"Shane's Expression magic is known in New Orleans," Klaus reports. "Witch covens fear him—he's been building toward massive death ritual for months. Silas's awakening requires extraordinary magical energy, likely hundreds of deaths concentrated in single event."
Sam's expression hardens. "He'll target Mystic Falls. Population density, supernatural significance, and he knows this is our territory."
"When?" Elijah asks.
Caroline realizes the answer with sinking dread. "Senior prom. Two weeks from now. Three hundred people minimum—entire senior class plus chaperones, all gathered in one location."
The room goes silent as everyone processes the implications.
"We evacuate," Damon suggests.
"No," Sam counters. "Shane expects that. We use prom as trap—be ready for him instead of running."
Klaus laughs with genuine admiration. "You're planning to bait Shane with three hundred potential victims while protecting them all simultaneously. Ambitious even by my standards."
"Can you do it?" Connor asks from the video screen.
Sam looks at his assembled allies—six clones, Original vampires, hybrid pack, the most powerful Bennett witch in generations, vampires with centuries of combat experience.
"We don't have a choice," Sam replies. "Shane's coming for Mystic Falls. We make our stand at prom or lose everything."

"It's beautiful," Sam says objectively, studying Klaus's artistry. "He's talented. And he sees you clearly—your strength, not just your beauty. That's dangerous."
Caroline kisses Sam with desperation that surprises them both. "I love you. Klaus can paint a thousand portraits and it won't change that."
Sam holds her, and Caroline believes her own words completely.
But later, alone in her room, she looks at the portrait and sees what Klaus sees—someone worthy of immortality, of adventure, of eternity.
And hates that tiny part of her wonders what that would feel like.
Two weeks until prom. Two weeks to prepare for Shane's massacre attempt. Two weeks to figure out how to protect three hundred people from Expression-powered dark witch who's spent months building toward this moment.
The Clone Sovereign versus the first immortal's would-be liberator.
