Chapter 12 - 12 Quiet observation

The mansion remained silent after Adrian left the kitchen.

Elena stood alone beside the counter for several moments, staring quietly at the empty coffee cup he had used earlier.

Rain continued falling softly outside the windows while cold wind brushed lightly against the glass.

But her thoughts remained restless.

Stay away from the west wing.

Mind your steps around old wounds.

His words replayed slowly inside her head.

The strange part was not the warning itself.

It was the way Adrian said it.

Calm.

Careful.

Almost like he was trying to stop her from walking into something painful rather than dangerous.

Elena slowly washed the cup before placing it neatly back onto the shelf.

The kitchen lights reflected softly against the marble counters while silence settled heavily across the mansion once again.

Everyone had finally gone upstairs.

Even Vanessa's endless complaints had disappeared for the night.

Elena quietly left the kitchen afterward and began walking back toward the servants' quarters.

Her footsteps echoed softly through the dim hallway.

As she passed near the east sitting room, familiar voices drifted faintly through the slightly opened door.

Vanessa.

And Adrian.

"You should sleep," Adrian said calmly.

Vanessa sighed dramatically.

"You say that like tonight wasn't exhausting."

"The event still went well."

"Barely," Vanessa muttered. "Do you know how stressful tonight was?"

Elena slowed slightly while continuing down the hallway naturally.

Neither of them noticed her.

Inside the sitting room, Adrian sat near the fireplace with his tie already removed while Vanessa stood beside the window holding a glass of wine.

"You worry too much," Adrian said quietly.

"And you don't worry enough."

A faint smile almost appeared on his face before disappearing again.

Vanessa narrowed her eyes slightly.

"What was that expression?"

"Nothing."

"You've been distracted lately."

"I'm tired, Vanessa."

"Well, so am I."

Elena lowered her gaze and quietly continued walking before the conversation drifted farther away behind her.

By the time she reached the servants' wing, the mansion had become completely silent again.

Rain tapped softly against the windows while distant thunder faded deeper into the night.

Elena entered her room quietly and shut the door behind her.

The small room immediately felt colder than before.

Or perhaps her thoughts simply refused to settle tonight.

She sat slowly on the edge of the bed before reaching beneath her pillow.

The hidden letter remained safely there.

Carefully, she unfolded it once again beneath the dim bedside lamp.

Do not trust Vivian. Protect Elena.

Her fingers tightened slightly around the paper.

The warning still made little sense.

But somehow, every strange reaction inside this mansion made the letter feel more important.

Especially Adrian's reaction earlier in the archive room.

Elena could still remember it clearly.

That brief moment of shock after seeing the photograph.

He recognized her mother.

Of that, she felt completely certain now.

Outside, the rain slowly weakened until only soft droplets remained against the windows.

Elena leaned back quietly against the wall.

The deeper she stepped into the Cole mansion, the clearer one thing became.

Her mother's past had never truly disappeared from this place.

It was still here.

Hidden quietly beneath years of silence.Elena remained awake long after the mansion fell completely silent.

The bedside lamp cast a soft golden glow across the small room while rain continued tapping lightly against the windows. Shadows stretched quietly across the walls, making the space feel smaller somehow.

Carefully, Elena folded the letter again and hid it beneath her pillow.

Her mind refused to rest tonight.

Too many things felt connected now.

The archive room.

The photograph.

Adrian's reaction.

And the strange warning written inside the letter.

None of it felt accidental anymore.

Elena slowly stood from the bed and walked toward the window.

Outside, the enormous Cole estate looked cold and distant beneath the rain-covered night sky. The gardens below were nearly invisible in the darkness except for the faint glow of pathway lights near the fountain.

Everything looked peaceful from the outside.

Perfect.

But Elena knew better now.

Perfect families did not hide old photographs.

Perfect families did not react so strangely to forgotten names.

And perfect mansions did not feel this heavy with silence.

A sudden sound interrupted her thoughts softly.

Footsteps.

Elena turned slightly toward the door.

The footsteps passed slowly through the servants' hallway outside before fading again moments later.

Probably another worker finally heading to bed.

Still, Elena remained alert.

Life inside the mansion had already taught her to notice small things carefully.

After several quiet minutes, she finally returned to the bed and sat down once more.

Tomorrow would be important.

She needed to move carefully from now on.

Observe more.

Speak less.

People inside this mansion revealed themselves slowly.

Especially when they believed no one was paying attention.

Elena lowered her eyes thoughtfully.

Vanessa hid irritation beneath elegance.

Adrian hid thoughts behind silence.

And Madam Martha—

Madam Martha always looked like she wanted to say something before stopping herself at the last second.

The memory made Elena frown slightly.

Everyone here seemed cautious whenever the past approached too closely.

As though one wrong conversation could reopen something long buried.

Her gaze slowly drifted toward the rain-covered window again.

Then suddenly—

A faint light appeared outside across the garden below.

Elena blinked softly.

Someone was still awake.

From her window, she could barely see the back terrace connected to the library hallway downstairs.

A figure stood there quietly beneath the covered stone arch.

Tall.

Still.

Even from a distance, Elena recognized Adrian immediately.

He stood alone with one hand resting against the railing while looking out toward the rain-covered gardens.

The cold night wind moved lightly through his dark hair.

For several moments, he did not move at all.

He simply stood there silently, completely lost inside his own thoughts.

Elena watched him carefully from behind the curtain.

Something about the scene unsettled her unexpectedly.

Not because Adrian looked dangerous.

But because he looked tired.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like someone carrying memories too heavy to put down.

After a while, Adrian finally lifted a hand and rubbed slowly against his forehead before looking toward the dark garden again.

Then, almost absentmindedly, he reached into his pocket and removed something small.

A photograph.

Elena's heartbeat slowed slightly.

Even from this distance, she could not see the image clearly.

But Adrian stared at it for several long seconds before quietly putting it away again.

The movement alone sent questions spiraling through her mind instantly.

Another photograph.

Another memory connected to the past.

Thunder rumbled faintly somewhere far away.

Adrian finally turned and disappeared back inside the mansion moments later.

The terrace became empty again.

But Elena remained standing near the window.

Her thoughts restless once more.

What exactly was Adrian hiding?

And why did it feel like her mother's shadow still lingered around him after all these years?

Slowly, Elena stepped away from the curtain.

One thing had become painfully obvious tonight.

The answers she came searching for were somewhere inside this mansion.

And Adrian stood far closer to those answers than anyone else.
