Chapter 18 - 18 Cracks Beneath the mask

Soft music floated through the enormous ballroom while golden lights reflected beautifully against the marble floors of the Cole mansion.

Guests laughed elegantly beneath the chandeliers.

Expensive perfume filled the air.

Everything looked perfect.

Exactly how Vivian wanted it.

Elena moved quietly between the guests carrying silver trays alongside the other servants. Her expression remained calm and professional, but her eyes observed everything carefully.

The rich truly lived differently.

Fake smiles.

Hidden tension.

Polite conversations hiding ugly thoughts underneath.

Across the ballroom, Vivian stood proudly near a group of wealthy women while showing off her charity event as though she owned the entire city.

Nearby, Adrian remained surrounded by business partners and investors.

Cold.

Sharp.

Untouchable.

Yet Elena noticed something tonight.

He looked exhausted.

Not physically.

Mentally.

Like someone carrying endless pressure alone.

Meanwhile upstairs, Vanessa sat inside her room scrolling angrily through her banking app for the fifth time.

Still frozen.

Every single account.

Her jaw tightened furiously.

"This is insane."

She immediately grabbed her phone and dialed Adrian.

No answer.

She called again.

Still nothing.

Vanessa stood up abruptly.

"He thinks this is funny?"

She stormed out of the room angrily, nearly colliding with Vivian near the staircase.

Vivian frowned instantly.

"Why are you stomping around like this?"

Vanessa shoved her phone toward her.

"He froze everything."

Vivian sighed heavily.

"I warned you already."

"Oh please." Vanessa rolled her eyes. "He's acting like I robbed strangers."

"You took company money."

"I was going to return it."

Vivian lowered her voice carefully after noticing servants nearby.

"Not now. Guests are downstairs."

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"Of course. Everything is always about appearances with this family."

She started walking downstairs angrily.

Vivian grabbed her arm quickly.

"Vanessa."

Vanessa pulled away impatiently.

"What?"

"Do not create drama tonight."

Vanessa stared at her for several seconds before scoffing softly.

Then suddenly—

A slow smile appeared on her face.

The kind that made Vivian nervous immediately.

Without another word, Vanessa continued downstairs.

Inside the ballroom, Elena carefully arranged fresh drinks near one of the side tables when she noticed Vanessa walking directly toward the bar area.

Her expression looked dangerous.

Vanessa grabbed a glass of champagne immediately before drinking half of it at once.

Then another.

One servant looked terrified approaching her.

"Miss Vanessa, should I—"

"Leave."

The servant disappeared instantly.

Vanessa leaned against the counter while glaring across the ballroom toward Adrian.

Not approaching him.

Just staring.

The anger on her face was impossible to miss.

Elena quietly noticed the tension from a distance.

Even Vivian kept watching Vanessa nervously from across the room.

Several minutes passed.

The party slowly continued normally.

Then suddenly—

CRASH!

The sharp sound echoed across the ballroom.

Guests turned immediately.

One entire tray of crystal glasses had shattered across the floor near the bar area.

A frightened servant stood frozen beside it.

Vanessa stepped backward slightly, clearly drunk and irritated.

"This idiot spilled it on me!"

The poor servant looked seconds away from crying.

"I-I'm sorry, miss—"

"Sorry?" Vanessa snapped loudly. "Do you know how expensive this dress is?"

The ballroom became awkwardly quiet.

Madam Martha rushed over immediately looking horrified.

"I'm extremely sorry, Miss Vanessa."

Vanessa laughed coldly.

"Sorry won't clean this mess."

The servant's hands trembled badly.

Elena quietly watched the scene while anger rose inside her chest.

People like Vanessa enjoyed humiliating others simply because they could.

Then suddenly—

A calm voice interrupted.

"Enough."

Adrian.

The entire ballroom became still instantly.

Vanessa turned sharply toward him.

Her expression hardened immediately.

Adrian walked closer calmly before looking down briefly at the broken glass.

Then at the terrified servant.

"Clean it up carefully," he said quietly.

The servant nodded quickly.

Vanessa folded her arms.

"So now you're protecting servants too?"

Adrian finally looked at her directly.

His expression remained unreadable.

"You're drunk."

Vanessa scoffed.

"And you're controlling."

"Go upstairs."

The command in his voice was quiet but firm.

Vanessa stared at him angrily.

For one dangerous second, Elena thought Vanessa might explode completely.

But then,

Vanessa suddenly laughed softly instead.

A cold laugh.

"You know what? Fine."

She grabbed another champagne glass from the counter.

"But don't expect me to beg you for money after this."

Adrian said nothing.

Which somehow made the tension worse.

Vanessa held his gaze for several long seconds before finally walking away toward the staircase.

Her heels echoed sharply against the marble floor.

Vivian quietly released the breath she had been holding.

The guests slowly returned to their conversations afterward, pretending nothing had happened.

But the atmosphere had already changed.

The elegant perfection of the party now carried visible cracks underneath.

Elena bent slightly to help one servant gather the remaining broken glass pieces.

Then suddenly,

A hand stopped her wrist gently.

Adrian.

"You'll cut yourself."

His voice remained calm.

Low.

Elena slowly looked up at him.

For one brief moment, the noise around them disappeared completely.

Their eyes locked again.

And strangely,

Neither of them moved immediately.

Then Elena quietly pulled her hand back.

"I can handle it."

Adrian studied her silently for a second longer before straightening again.

Maybe it was the lights.

Maybe exhaustion.

But for the first time,

Elena thought she saw something dangerous hidden behind Adrian's cold expression.

Not arrogance.

Not cruelty.

Loneliness.

Deep, quiet loneliness.

And somehow,

That unsettled her more than hatred ever could.Adrian stepped away shortly afterward, returning once again to the wealthy guests waiting for him near the center of the ballroom.

But Elena's thoughts remained unsettled.

She hated this feeling.

Every time she looked at Adrian lately, things became more complicated inside her mind.

That was dangerous.

Very dangerous.

Across the ballroom, Vivian finally approached Vanessa near the staircase.

"You embarrassed yourself again," she whispered sharply.

Vanessa rolled her eyes while sipping champagne carelessly.

"Oh relax. Nobody died."

Vivian glanced nervously toward Adrian before lowering her voice further.

"You need to stop provoking him."

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"He froze my accounts like I'm some useless criminal."

"Then return the money."

Vanessa's expression darkened instantly.

"You sound just like him now."

Without waiting for another response, she brushed past Vivian and disappeared upstairs again.

Meanwhile, Elena quietly carried another tray toward the garden entrance.

As she pushed open the glass doors slightly, cold wind rushed inside.

Rain still poured heavily outside.

Then suddenly,

She noticed something strange.

A black car remained parked quietly beyond the mansion gates.

The engine was still running.

But no guest arrived.

No one stepped out.

Elena frowned slightly.

For several long seconds, the car remained completely still beneath the rain.

Watching the mansion.

Waiting.
