Having let go of the unnecessary distractions, Lin Yuhui's mood became much simpler and calmer. Those sleepless nights could only be made up for slowly.
"David, this equipment needs an adjustment," the boss came to Lin Yuhui holding a draft.
But this time it didn't go as smoothly as usual. Lin Yuhui felt his brain wasn't quite sharp, his reactions were sluggish, and even the data entry he was doing kept producing errors.
"What's wrong, David? You've lost your touch today," Christian asked half-jokingly.
"Ah, why don't you go handle your business first? I'll bring it to you when I'm done."
"Okay, thanks."
Slowing his own pace, after finishing the work and delivering it to the boss, Lin Yuhui gathered his thoughts. He too realized he had been below his standard today. The sleep issues and his heart's blood-supply problems of these past few days had affected his state by the afternoon. As it got close to quitting time, the atmosphere in the office livened up again. Dylan was naturally the most animated, but Lin Yuhui no longer joined in their conversations, letting the words of the people around him, separated by his own silence, fly over his head.
After a somewhat groggy afternoon, he finished the day's work and went to the cafeteria to eat as usual. Sitting in a corner, he happened to look up and a petite woman in a yellow-based dress with red flowers caught his attention. Her demeanor was poised, her aura fresh and clean — not at all like the vulgarity of ordinary factory girls, nor like the excessive seductiveness of Cerise. What Lin Yuhui found most intriguing was that the moment he saw her face and hairstyle, they reminded him of the second woman from the three consecutive dreams he'd had before. She seemed to be new — whether she was here temporarily or long-term, he didn't know. But what did that have to do with him anyway? He finished his meal and strolled back to his lodging.
In Lin Yuhui's spare time, besides collecting news, he now had a new pastime — his newly purchased violin had arrived. It was a second-hand instrument, with a spliced body, and the wood grain looked quite nice. His rented room was on the fifth floor, and the landlord seemed to live three floors below, so there was no issue of noise disturbance. He rubbed rosin on the bow and tuned the strings, then gave it a try — but the string height seemed a bit too high, and it cut into his fingers.
In the quiet time that followed, it was the cutting and scraping of wood by the blade of a utility knife. As the peaceful evening hours slipped away, deeper layers of the wood grain revealed themselves in the cutting, like turning through the traces of bygone years. The maple of the bridge, as it was worn smooth, gave off a clean fragrance accumulated over the years, bringing a clarity and calm that pierced the heart — as if one were already standing deep in a tranquil mountain forest.
Putting down what he was doing, Lin Yuhui felt he had enjoyed enough of this for today — any more would just be toil. He got up and stretched his limbs and joints. A wisp of coolness blowing in through the open纱窗 caught his attention.
The night outside had turned completely dark. This was the suburban edge of the county town, with not much municipal lighting. Looking out the window, the dim yellow lights from homes and small shops were the only warmth in the darkness.
Looking up at the sky again, it was the rain clouds brought by the typhoon that had blocked the daytime heat and brought the evening coolness. The churning dark clouds here looked different from what Lin Yuhui had seen before — they seemed very low, and silent lightning flickered among the rolling clouds.
The intensifying wind was about to blow the boards stacked on the third-floor balcony and roof of the neighbor across the way right off. A pair of little sisters were busy putting them away. The older sister especially made Lin Yuhui's heart leap — she was actually standing on the wall of the third-floor balcony, pulling down the boards from the roof. One slip and she could fall from the third floor. Were all girls this risk-prone? Or did they just seek thrills? He would definitely tell the landlord tomorrow to have him speak to the adults across the way and teach these kids some safety awareness.
The next morning, Lin Yuhui focused only on his own world in the office. After finishing the work at hand, he discovered a line of evaluation from the boss in his email: "Your work is useless."
Lin Yuhui was instantly indignant. If it was going to be like this from the start, how could he possibly keep going at this company in the days ahead? Constantly being disparaged and manipulated? He wasn't that kind of person. Even though he had been unemployed for years, if he had to eat this rice on his knees — could he really endure it?
Lin Yuhui's thoughts churned. He knew deeply that the courage not to kneel didn't come from whining, nor from putting on a show of strength — it came from truly having the courage to let go, whether in finding a job or finding a partner. Lin Yuhui hesitated for a moment, then finally decided to take this step. But how to take that first step? He knew in his heart.
Only to see Lin Yuhui slam his mouse down on the desk with a bang and blurt out casually,
"If this job can't be done, then I won't do it."
Dylan beside him caught the vibe instantly and leaned right in, his bulbous nose almost touching Lin Yuhui's face.
"David, what's up?"
Lin Yuhui knew that Dylan had always been dissatisfied with his own position — for financial reasons or other reasons. He had even once wanted to learn CAD from Lin Yuhui to gain some skills so he'd have more confidence to jump ship. But Lin Yuhui knew clearly that Dylan had no real personal advantages, and had talked him out of it. Now that he himself had this inclination, he knew Dylan would butt in like he'd been injected with chicken blood.
Lin Yuhui pulled his chair back to make room, pointed at the screen and said petulantly,
"Look, the boss says I'm useless. What's the point of me still working? If it won't work, I'll just quit." After saying that, he stood up indignantly and went to stand in front of the floor-to-ceiling window, facing the wall, staring at the scenery.
From the corner of his eye, he could only see Dylan dragging his chair up to the screen, staring at it with the utmost care.
Lin Yuhui vented his anger facing the glass for a while, figuring Stephanie had probably already sent the news straight to the boss. Only then did he return to his seat and reply to the boss's email with a few cold words: "Need to talk."
Before long, the boss's wife came first, saying pleasantly,
"David, don't worry, the boss will be here soon."
Lin Yuhui quickly stood up and said with a smile,
"Okay, no rush. Go ahead with your work, I'm fine." As the saying goes, you don't hit someone who's smiling at you — especially when that someone is a woman.
Sitting in his seat, not long after, the boss arrived too. Lin Yuhui glanced at him as he walked past the window — his face full of trouble.
"David, do you have something to talk to me about? Are you free now?"
"Yes, preferably now." Lin Yuhui stood up to answer, but his expression and tone were ice-cold.
"Alright then, let me tidy up the office. I'll call you when I'm ready."
After a while, he came to the boss's office, sat down, and seeing that the boss showed no sign of speaking first, Lin Yuhui got straight to the point.
"If my work has no value, then I should leave." His voice was low and steady, his expression dark.
"Why do you want to leave?" Christian asked, somewhat confused.
"You said it — my work has no value. So what's the point of me staying here?"
"When did I ever say your work has no value?"
"The email you sent me." After saying that, seeing Christian turn to check his computer screen, Lin Yuhui also stood up and pointed it out to him.
Just as Lin Yuhui's gaze swept across the email list, a memory suddenly flashed in his mind — he had received an email from the boss before. That project had been cancelled, yet he had still gone ahead and finished it according to the original plan. It was as if his brain had rusted over.
So the boss's reply email was correct — he had indeed done useless work. This was a misunderstanding.
