"Ethan, several of my maintenance tasks have been on hold these past few months—some require a supervisor to operate, others are beyond my capability. I just noticed your assignment is no longer in Kalispell. Perhaps next week the company will assign you to assist with my workload."
"Sure, it's been a long time since we hung out."
Do you miss me?
"I miss you, I miss you so much,"
"Ha ha,"
"Send me a photo of yourself right now—I barely recognize you anymore."
In the photo, Kasiya looked thinner. Li Haojun couldn't help but feel a pang of concern as he noticed the slight pallor in her face, wondering if it was due to the recent exhaustion from work.
"Your hair has grown so long."
Yeah, I'm growing my hair out again. Do you like it?
"I like both short and long."
...
On the flight to Boise, Li Haojun looked at his chat history with Kasiya from a few days earlier, a sweet smile playing on his lips. The anxious heart that had been separated from Kasiya for months finally relaxed. The Kasiya he knew remained his Kasiya, and his sense of anticipation felt as fresh and expansive as the azure sky and sea of clouds outside the airplane window.
The entire morning was spent on the road, and it was nearly noon before he set off for the factory. In late spring and early summer, the blazing sunlight filtered through the trembling, tender green leaves of the poplar trees, telling the story of spring's vibrant vitality. Occasionally, rays of light pierced through the gaps in the foliage, casting a backlight on Li Haojun's face. In that dazzling radiance, the colors of life shone brightly.
Turning the corner to reach the gates of Eagle's factory, he spotted Kacy waiting for him from afar. Today she wore pink skinny pencil pants and a light blue denim jacket with a collar and diagonal drawstring. She'd pulled her hair back into a bun, but the strands on either side weren't quite long enough, so they fell naturally, framing her cheeks. She paced back and forth before the factory entrance, her white sneakers strikingly visible in the midday sun's direct rays...
Suddenly, Li Haojun felt another powerful gust of wind from behind toss him upward, followed by the sensation of weightlessness before plummeting back down. He instinctively tensed every muscle in his body, bracing for the impact of hitting the ground, but only a slight jolt followed.
Li Haojun opened his eyes to find himself seated inside a hovering air taxi that had already landed. As the cabin door slid open, the clamor of voices outside reached him. He realized he had been dreaming—a dream he'd had during the flight. Recalling carefully, he confirmed he had indeed planned to head to the Eagle Factory.
Li Haojun glanced at the time—it was already afternoon. Only then did he recall that he'd fallen asleep after eating lunch in the air and slept straight through until now. He couldn't figure out why he'd slept so soundly this time, waking up completely groggy. Stepping off the aircraft, he surveyed his surroundings. He was indeed in the plaza in front of the Eagle Factory. But Kacyia wasn't there to greet him at the factory gates. For some reason, crowds of people were gathering on the surrounding streets.
With a ding notification, Li Haojun pulled out his terminal device to see that it was indeed an instant message from Kasiya.
"Ethan, I see you. Please enter the factory premises as soon as possible. I'll be waiting for you in the control room."
With a sense of excitement, Li Haojun jogged up to the factory control room on the first floor. Just as he was about to step through the door, he took a moment to steady his nerves and catch his breath. Looking inside, he seemed a bit timid.
A simple white top, light blue jeans—still that familiar figure.
Gazing at the profile of her cheek, Li Haojun stepped softly into the room, filled with anticipation yet tinged with a flutter of apprehension as he whispered her name.
"Kasia,"
She turned her head, offering no reply, but simply stood up and gave Li Haojun a hug.
All of Li Haojun's inner hesitation and unease vanished in that moment as he held her tightly in his arms, refusing to let go.
After a long while, Kasiya shook Li Haojun's shoulder and said,
"Ethan, you should take a look at the situation here first."
Hearing her say this, Li Haojun let go of her and asked,
"What's wrong?"
Kasia pointed at the outdoor surveillance feed, switching between views as she spoke.
"Look—there are so many unidentified individuals surrounding our factory. I've actually been here for a full day and night. It started with equipment malfunctions; the company sent me to investigate. But since I arrived, I've noticed more and more people gathering around the factory perimeter. And the equipment damage appears to be deliberate sabotage."
"Oh, I see. Did you report it to the police?" Li Haojun asked urgently upon hearing this.
Yes, I called the police, but no officers came. Then I reported the situation to the company, and they sent you over.
"Oh," Li Haojun gave a helpless smile, carefully observing the state and movements of the people around him as he asked,
"What's the local news saying?"
"There have been reports of riots in Boise, and it seems the police are all heading there," Kasiya explained.
"How much water and food do we have left?"
"No need to worry about that. We've got enough for a few days. It's just these people I'm concerned about."
"I understand. Gathering here without proper authorization, and likely having already damaged workshop equipment," Li Haojun said as he pulled out his terminal to request backup. But there was none available. He regretted not bringing a weapon, though judging by the number of people outside, he'd probably need a machine gun.
"Sorry for making you stay out there alone for so long,"
Hearing Li Haojun say this, Kasiya's face lit up with a sweet smile. Li Haojun, however, didn't notice; his attention was entirely focused on observing the chaotic crowd outside and devising a way to escape.
Kasia, was there a big crowd here last night?
Not much, but when I tried to leave this afternoon, someone came toward me. I was so scared I went back inside the factory and haven't come out since.
"Why didn't you just call me?" Li Haojun's tone carried a hint of reproach. He didn't notice Casey's reaction as he analyzed the news reports and surveillance footage while speaking.
I suspect these individuals might be waiting for nightfall. News reports indicate the riots and vandalism in Boise began after dark. Once it gets dark, facial recognition becomes difficult for both fixed surveillance cameras and police drones. Report the situation to headquarters. We're preparing to evacuate. You stay here monitoring the feeds. We'll stay in contact via walkie-talkie. I'll go gather the necessary items for our departure.
"Alright," Casey said flatly, a hint of reluctance flickering in her eyes.
As dusk fell, Li Haojun radioed Kasiya to meet at Gate 5 of the office building. He appeared carrying a hand-operated disinfectant sprayer on his back, four beer bottles tucked into his chest, a straight ladder in his right hand, and a shoulder bag in his left.
"Here's food and water. Put this on your back," Li Haojun said, handing the shoulder bag to Rikaycia.
"Follow me. We'll go out through the back wall."
Then he walked out of the building without looking back.
Leaning the ladder against the back wall, Li Haojun climbed up first. Peeking his head over the top, he scanned left and right. Seeing no one, he said nothing, merely straddling the wall and beckoning to Kasiya to climb up too.
Li Haojun held the ladder against the wall. When Kasiya climbed up, he helped her sit across from him. He then pulled the ladder up, lowered it over the wall, and let Kasiya descend first. After she was safely down, he climbed down himself, laid the ladder flat, and hid it in the grass.
By then, night had fallen completely. Li Haojun said nothing, taking Casey's hand as they walked along the back mountain path toward a general aviation landing pad at the summit. As they advanced, Li kept one eye on Highway 55 to their right, where a bustling stream of vehicles and people flowed toward Eagle. Headlights and various lights illuminated the entire roadway.
In the evening breeze, halfway along the mountain path, Li Haojun unloaded the sprayer and beer bottles from his back and placed them in the roadside grass. Only then did Kasiya ask softly,
"What's that?"
Molotov cocktails and flamethrowers," Li Haojun said, then took the backpack from Kasiya's shoulders and slung it over his own. Taking her hand, he continued onward with lightened loads.
Fortunately, this path was secluded, and no troublemakers ventured into this area—they seemed far more eager to wreak havoc on the city. In the gentle evening breeze, he held Kasiya's hand, occasionally turning to gaze at her face and silhouette in the night, filling the void left by his longing for her since their parting.
With light steps, the two reached the aircraft landing pad on the mountain ridge. The wind picked up slightly at the summit's height, yet it remained warm and gentle. As they waited for the air taxi, Li Haojun rested his hands on Kasiya's shoulders, studying her face intently—he couldn't get enough of looking at her.
"Where are we going now?" Kasiya asked softly.
Li Haojun tenderly stroked her cheek and whispered,
"Come home with me."
