Chapter 6 - 'SEE YOU MORNING' 006 Welcome Back 《晓欣卿》006欢迎归来

In the dim theater, a performance was on stage, and the audience was all children, elementary school students. The children were very quiet, all watching the show seriously, when suddenly the curtain on stage caught fire. The fire spread very quickly, and by the time the children on stage had come down, the entire stage was already engulfed in flames.

Li Haojun quickly turned around and shouted to the children in the front rows, "Rows one and two, stand up, evacuate to the rear, hurry hurry hurry, don't push, don't push, hurry hurry hurry. Students in the last row, open the doors, hold them open, hold them open!" Li Haojun stood by the aisle seats, watching as the first two rows evacuated, then urgently shouted, "Rows three and four, stand up, rows three and four, stand up, go go go, evacuate quickly."

At this point, the stage fire behind them had already spread to the front ceiling of the theater, with thick smoke and intense heat rolling overhead and behind them,

"Students in rows five and six, stand up, evacuate quickly, hurry hurry hurry."

The children were very well-behaved and obedient, but the fire was spreading rapidly, and the smoke and scorching heat were getting lower and lower. Li Haojun looked at the remaining children who still needed to be evacuated and began to feel uneasy,

"Rows seven, eight, and nine, evacuate, hurry hurry hurry,"

By now, smoke had filled the space overhead, and the intense heat seemed ready to singe their hair and backs.

"Bend down and run, bend down..."

Under the engulfing orange flames and black tar-like smoke, Li Haojun urgently realized it might be too late.

Suddenly he opened his eyes—it was just a dream. He collected himself; the dream was very vivid, and he didn't know why he'd had such a dream.

Li Haojun got up and found that Qin Wenjing hadn't woken yet, so he went to her room. She was in the same position as yesterday morning. Li Haojun sat gently on the edge of the bed, touched her body, and seeing no reaction, didn't disturb her sleep, quietly leaving on his own.

Qin Wenjing lay silently, slowly opening her eyes. She was actually already awake, just waiting for Li Haojun to call her to get up like yesterday morning. She understood her man—the more he cared about someone, the more he cared about her past. And last night's passion might not have strengthened their relationship; it could have been hurtful. As a woman, she understood the difference between love and fuck. She had wanted to be intimate with him again this morning, but he had left on his own.

Qin Wenjing, wearing her pajamas, got up and left the bedroom. She found Li Haojun sitting by the computer in the living room, so she walked over barefoot, squatted by Li Haojun's chair, placed her hand on his thigh, looked up at him and said, "Don't overthink it, there's nothing between me and John."

Li Haojun looked down at her face, delicate and pitiful, then reached out to pull her up, helped her sit on his lap, gently caressed her body and said, "Don't worry, I love you."

Qin Wenjing wrapped her arms around his neck, pressed her face against his and said,

"A very, very long time ago, I tried to live a normal person's life—get married, have children, just live like that for a lifetime. But the marriage failed quickly. I underestimated how difficult it is to get along with someone else. When I was drifting through the world, I realized I could never find you again."

As she spoke, Qin Wenjing's hot tears slid down and fell on Li Haojun. He quickly turned his head to wipe her tears and said,

"Don't cry, I'm right here, we'll never be apart again."

"Mm," Qin Wenjing, with red eyes, sobbing, looked at Li Haojun and continued to murmur,

"I didn't love that man from my past either. My body from the past was a long time ago. Don't dislike me as I am now."

Li Haojun gently wiped away her tear stains, kissed her lips, then held her in his arms and whispered in her ear,

"I would never dislike you, how could I. Someone so good as you, I can't even cherish you enough. Sometimes my mind gets muddled, don't worry, I won't get lost. I will always remember the path that leads to you."

After being intimate like this for a while, Qin Wenjing looked at the computer screen and asked,

"What are you doing?"

"Looking at news and big events that happened in the past, filling in the gaps in my memory." After saying this, Li Haojun laughed self-deprecatingly.

"Oh, I'll go make breakfast." After saying this, Qin Wenjing slid off Li Haojun's lap, a smile crossing her face, because the man she knew had come back.

Li Haojun also put down what he was doing, wrapped his arms around her waist like a shadow, pressed close to Qin Wenjing as they went to the kitchen together. They could only step with their left legs and right legs at the same time, while Qin Wenjing giggled and looked back at Li Haojun.

At the breakfast table, Qin Wenjing swept her loose hair to one side, in her cool pajamas, sat across with her legs crossed, a sweet expression on her face.

"Last time I asked you a question and you still haven't answered me," Li Haojun asked while eating.

"What?" Qin Wenjing said in a crisp voice.

"I asked you, do we have any guns. I think... it's better to have some, this is America." Li Haojun answered.

"Mm, you've always been like this, always seeming to lack a sense of security. Yes, they were yours before too. Actually, it's quite safe here. Our area is quite conservative, far from the free zones of the big cities. The counties in between enforce laws that don't allow criminal offenses like robbery, so habitual criminals from the free zones can't come over. There are patrol cars and drones blocking those with records. Over there they have absolute freedom, but they can never escape the consequences." Qin Wenjing slowly ate and drank while casually briefing Li Haojun on the situation.

"Mm, the last line of defense still needs to be there. On one hand for petty thieves, on the other hand in case of something planned, you can't just sit and wait to die." Li Haojun added.

Qin Wenjing smiled and looked at Li Haojun. She knew this man too well. She had told him the logic of survival countless times before, but she liked this kind of man.

"They're all in the basement. After eating, I'll take you to see." As she said this, Qin Wenjing finished eating, stirred her still-hot coffee with a spoon, waiting for Li Haojun.

Coming to the basement, the lights were a bit dim. There were no windows or doors leading to the outside of the residence, and it was a bit cold and gloomy. To the right of the stairs down was a safe.

"Go try it, fingerprint lock," Qin Wenjing said with her arms crossed, not following forward.

Li Haojun unlocked it and pulled open the heavy door. Inside was like a small arsenal, with long and short weapons all complete. He looked back at Qin Wenjing in disbelief and asked,

"Could it be that I'm also a secret agent?"

Qin Wenjing still had her arms crossed and said, "No, you just like it."

"Alright, looks like I'm quite wealthy," Li Haojun said as he helped Qin Wenjing up the stairs and out of the basement.

"It's a bit cold here, you don't need to stay here with me."

"Okay, you be safe yourself."

After sending Qin Wenjing off, Li Haojun began his immersive appreciation of his collection. The inside of the safe door was all short guns: P228 Sig Sauer, exclusively for U.S. federal government agents, .40 Smith & Wesson USP, SEAL Team bid series, CZ75 all-steel compact, and so on, then CZ sub-compact and so on, HK P30SK. No full-size pistols, but Li Haojun instantly understood that his palm size simply wasn't suited for full-size pistol grips. A few .38 revolvers, Smith & Wesson, Ruger, all with concealed hammers, double-action only. Then there were pocket-level miniature self-defense pistols, .32 Beretta, and below that a short-barreled Savage shotgun.

Li Haojun laughed to himself. What a long-term project this must have been. It seemed that Qin Wenjing's claim of being his partner for ten years wasn't exaggerated.

Looking further inside, there was a NATO 7.62 Remington bolt-action, NATO 5.56 SCAR, Warsaw Pact 7.62 AK, and a Warsaw Pact rimmed 7.62 Mosin-Nagant, all popular civilian calibers. It seemed this was truly just a hobby, not pursuing ultimate performance—or else it was extremely pragmatic. Li Haojun analyzed the behavioral motives as he examined each piece.

Although he had forgotten his past experience of using and buying them, Li Haojun still picked them up one by one to test the feel. Without mental memory, what about muscle memory? Li Haojun tried gripping, chambering a round, releasing the magazine, clearing the chamber, decocking—no real feel. It seemed he was just a hobbyist, not a secret agent.

While handling the pistols, he noticed the serial numbers had years, sequential year by year, spanning a very long time. It seemed he really liked this—every year there was a new model added to the collection.

Li Haojun picked two, locked the safe, and went back up the stairs to the room. Touching the two pieces he'd brought up, he couldn't help but wonder: do I really need that many?

He looked for Qin Wenjing. She was combing her hair, sitting at her vanity mirror braiding her hair into a bun with many small braids.

Li Haojun sat beside her, wrapped his arm around her waist, admiring her work. Qin Wenjing gave Li Haojun a sweet smile in the mirror.

"Were all those items of mine bought at once?" Li Haojun asked.

"No," Qin Wenjing was a bit surprised he was asking this.

"Why do I keep buying guns?"

"Who knows what you were thinking." Qin Wenjing answered with a pout.

"Sigh, am I still an employee of the company? Do I still have a salary?"

"Yes, I've been keeping it for you."

"Wife, give it back to me, okay? I want to buy things," Li Haojun said, shaking Qin Wenjing's waist while whispering in her ear.

"Oh, when you want money I'm your wife, when you don't want money I give you everything for free,,," Qin Wenjing opened her mouth wide, pretending to be dissatisfied.

At this moment, Li Haojun also remembered something and asked timidly, "Honestly, did I ever... propose to you before?"

Qin Wenjing slowly calmed down, took Li Haojun's hand, and said softly, "No." As she said this, she looked to the side. After a moment, she turned back to Li Haojun and said, "Wandering the world..." She stroked Li Haojun's hand and murmured, "Isn't this good enough? Why think so far ahead." After saying this, she gently lay into Li Haojun's arms.
