Liz sat in her car outside the café, sipping her coffee and pretending to scroll through her phone. She had arranged to meet Evelyn here, choosing a neutral location far from Madam Grace's shop. She needed to approach the conversation casually, not alarm Griffin, not alert Vinny, and definitely not give West any inkling of what was unfolding.
Evelyn arrived promptly, her posture stiff, eyes scanning the parking lot before landing on Liz. She gave a curt nod and slid into the passenger seat.
"Thank you for meeting me," Liz said softly. "I wanted to talk about Vinny. About his routines. How things are going."
Evelyn crossed her arms, eyes narrowing. "And why would you need to know?"
Liz smiled politely. "I just… care about him. I know you do too. I want to make sure everything is okay, that he's safe, that… no one is taking advantage of him."
Evelyn's gaze softened, but just for a moment. She leaned back, studying Liz carefully. "He's safe. For now. But you have to understand… Griffin is very… intense. Protective. Obsessed, if you want to call it that. It isn't easy to be near him without noticing it."
Liz nodded slowly. "I've seen glimpses. I mean, he's kind, he helps Vinny, but… there are patterns that feel controlling. I'm trying to understand."
Evelyn's lips tightened. "You are brave to say that. Most people would not. Griffin's mother, for example, refuses to think about it. She sees his protectiveness as love. And in some ways it is. But it has… shadows."
Shane's words from earlier echoed in Liz's mind. Observing, documenting, connecting patterns. This was exactly what they needed.
"Do you think Vinny notices?" Liz asked, careful to keep her tone casual.
Evelyn's eyes flickered with uncertainty. "I don't know. I hope not. He is… young. He trusts Griffin. He admires him. But there are moments… moments where his eyes tell me he feels something he cannot name. Something heavy. Something that scares him even as he wants it."
Liz's pulse quickened. That was exactly what she had suspected. Griffin's obsessive love was not soft. It was dark, and Vinny was trapped in its gravity.
"Has anyone else noticed?" Liz asked.
Evelyn hesitated. "Madam Grace, sometimes. But she admires him too. She sees the care, the protection, and she overlooks the shadows. She does not want to think of the darker side."
Liz nodded, committing every word to memory. "Thank you for trusting me with this. I want to help Vinny if something ever goes wrong. If… if Griffin's obsession becomes dangerous."
Evelyn's eyes hardened. "Then you will need to be very careful. He notices everything. He knows when someone is watching. If Griffin even suspects… he can be… intense."
Intensity. That word made Liz shiver slightly.
Meanwhile, across town, Griffin had returned to his apartment. He moved silently through the rooms, alert, aware. The fleeting sense that someone was watching had not left him. West's presence lingered like a shadow at the edge of his perception, subtle, calculating, unnerving.
He checked the security cameras installed around the building, even though they were meant for his own protection. Everything appeared normal. Yet his instincts screamed differently. Someone had been close enough to observe him, to study him.
Griffin exhaled, running a hand through his hair. He knew what he had to do. Control the situation. Protect Vinny. And ensure that any threat, no matter how small, understood that he would not allow interference.
Vinny, oblivious, was in the kitchen, quietly organizing his day. He glanced at the window. Something felt different. Tension hung in the apartment like a thick fog.
Griffin noticed the glance. His hand brushed against Vinny's shoulder. "Relax," he murmured. "You are safe. Nothing can touch you while I am here."
Vinny nodded, but the unease lingered. Griffin's dark, protective energy pressed against him, comforting and terrifying at once. The intensity that had once been thrilling now carried a weight that pressed into every thought, every breath.
Outside, West lingered in the shadows. He had noticed the change in Griffin's behavior. His subtle probing had triggered a response, one that made him take careful note. Every step Griffin took to protect and claim Vinny left a trail. Every pattern could be observed, analyzed, exploited.
Shane and Finn were preparing too. Liz's meeting with Evelyn had given them crucial insight. They began mapping Griffin's routines, noting the subtle control he exerted, planning carefully how to gather evidence without alarming him.
The stage was being set. Every player was moving, every shadow shifting into place.
And Vinny remained unaware, caught between the dark, obsessive love that surrounded him and the invisible web beginning to close in.
Outside the apartment, the city hummed quietly. But the tension inside was building, and soon every hidden truth would collide.
