I sat on the ground where the field ended and the tree line began, and I thought about what I had just seen in her eyes.
This was the problem.
I had gone to that field with a clear purpose and a settled mind, the kind of settled that comes after you have already grieved the outcome and accepted it as necessary. I had done the accounting. I had buried Isabella. I had finished Rodrigo. I had moved through every item on the list she had not written down but that I had carried anyway, and the last item was the one standing in the field wearing black eyes and Annalyn's face.
And then something in those eyes had changed while she was standing over me.
