Professor Utonium stepped into the hallway... he looked like he was one wrong word away from activating the house's defense systems. Bubbles peeked out from the living room in her pajamas, eyes widening like saucers, while Blossom hurried in from the kitchen still holding a whisk.
"What are your intentions with my daughter?!" the Professor demanded, adjusting his glasses as he stepped forward protectively. His lab coat was slightly stained with what looked like chemical residue.
"Arghhh!!! Professor stop!" Buttercup growled, her cheeks turning a shade that rivaled her outfit. "This is Dexter. He's… a friend from school and band practice. He's here because he wants to recruit you for something called Dextrotech."
Bubbles let out a high-pitched squeal. "Buttercup has a Boyfriend! Buttercup has a Boyfriend!"
"He is not my boyfriend!" Buttercup snapped, shooting Dexter a look that was half glare, half plea for backup.
Dexter felt a flicker of genuine amusement mixed with mild panic. He smiled and said "Professor, I promise my intentions are completely professional. Buttercup's been kind enough to introduce me, but I'm here because I admire your work. Dextrotech is my company, we're building something bigger, and I'd love to have you on board, even just for a trial run."
Blossom crossed her arms, tilting her head . "Dextrotech? I've heard about it in the internet, but nothing about a high school student running it."
"That's because most people don't look past the surface," Dexter replied "I've been building this for a while. Resources, funding, secure labs. We could collaborate on stabilizing compounds safely. "
The Professor's stern posture eased slightly, curiosity sparking behind his glasses. "Collaborate, you say? What exactly are you proposing?"
Buttercup jumped in, giving Dexter a supportive nudge. "Dexter's the real deal, Professor. He's a genius and serious about this. There's an expo tomorrow within his company so you should go."
Bubbles clapped excitedly. "An expo? That sounds like a perfect date!"
"It's not a date!" Buttercup retorted.
Professor Utonium stroked his chin, eyes lighting up with that familiar inventor spark. "Interesting. Very interesting. Girls, why don't you set the table? Dexter, would you like to see the lab downstairs?."
The basement lab was a beautiful kind of organized madness, beakers glowing softly, notes scattered across tables, containment fields humming. Dexter walked beside the Professor, asking genuine questions and offering thoughtful insights without revealing too much. He felt a real spark of excitement here; this wasn't just recruitment. It was connection, two minds who understood the thrill and weight of creation. The Professor grew more animated, demonstrating a recent attempt at a stabilizer.
By the time they returned upstairs, the table was set for dinner. The aroma of pasta sauce and fresh garlic bread filled the house. Dinner itself was lively chaos.
"So, Dexter," Bubbles said sweetly, passing him the breadbasket with a wink, "how long have you and Buttercup been a thing? She gets all grumpy when we ask, but it's obvious!"
Buttercup nearly choked on her water. "Bubbles! We're not— He's just— Argh!"
Blossom smiled thoughtfully. "It does seem like a strong pairing."
Dexter chuckled, a real, warm sound that surprised even him. He caught Buttercup's eye across the table and offered a small, reassuring smile. "We're good friends. Buttercup's been a big help keeping things grounded. I value that more than you know."
The Professor watched the exchange, then finally relaxed into a chuckle. "Well, if your visit is truly about science… I'm open to a trial collaboration. Data sharing, one joint project to start. But if anything untoward happens to Butte…"
"Professor!" Buttercup groaned.
As dinner wound down, Bubbles and Blossom kept up the teasing, inventing increasingly ridiculous ship names while Buttercup buried her face in her hands. Dexter helped clear the table, enjoying the normalcy of it all.
At the door, Professor Utonium shook his hand firmly. "The expo tomorrow sounds promising. I'll come by and see what Dextrotech really offers before deciding."
"Looking forward to it, Professor," Dexter replied, sincere.
