Chapter 4 - Chapter 4 - A flame worth saving (remake)

The morning sun climbed slowly above the endless sea of trees, painting the forest in warm shades of gold and amber. Thin rays of light slipped through the dense canopy, illuminating drifting dust and tiny insects that floated lazily through the cool air. Birds called from distant branches while somewhere deeper in the wilderness, the cries of wild Pokémon echoed across the valley.

It should have been peaceful.

Instead, every sound reminded Alex to stay alert.

He walked carefully beside Riolu, stepping over twisted roots and ducking beneath low branches. His shirt was still stained from the fight with the Mightyena. No matter how many times he had tried to rinse it in the nearby stream the previous evening, faint brown patches remained, carrying with them the lingering smell of smoke and dried blood.

Beside him, Riolu moved with the same determination he always had.

His injuries had begun healing, but they hadn't disappeared.

Every few steps, Alex noticed the little Fighting-type favoring one leg before stubbornly correcting himself as though refusing to show weakness.

Alex finally sighed.

"You know..."

Riolu glanced toward him.

"You really should've stayed in the cave today."

"...Rio."

The answer came immediately.

A firm shake of the head.

Alex smiled despite himself.

"I figured."

He looked ahead once more.

"You never listen."

Riolu crossed his arms with an almost offended expression.

Alex couldn't help laughing quietly.

"I guess we're both stubborn."

The forest grew silent again.

Not uncomfortable.

Comfortable.

They had spent enough time together that silence no longer felt awkward.

Alex found himself appreciating that.

Back on Earth, silence had usually meant loneliness.

Here...

It simply meant they understood each other.

Several hours passed without much luck.

The few berry bushes they discovered had already been stripped clean.

Broken branches littered the ground beneath them.

Small Pokémon tracks surrounded nearly every patch of edible plants.

Alex crouched beside another empty bush before letting out a tired sigh.

"Nothing..."

He gently pushed a branch aside.

"Looks like we're not the only ones trying to survive."

Riolu sniffed around the area before pointing deeper into the forest.

"You think there's more over there?"

Riolu nodded.

Alex stood.

"Then let's keep moving."

The further they walked, the older the forest became.

Towering trees blocked most of the sunlight until only scattered beams reached the ground. Thick vines hung between branches, while enormous roots twisted across the earth like the backs of sleeping Onix.

Even the sounds of birds became fewer.

Alex slowed his pace.

"I don't like how quiet it is."

Riolu's ears twitched.

He didn't like it either.

Then

A sound.

Alex froze.

"...Did you hear that?"

It wasn't a roar.

Nor footsteps.

It sounded like...

Someone struggling to breathe.

A weak rasp.

Followed by another.

Then silence.

Alex carefully motioned for Riolu to stay close.

Together, they moved toward the sound as quietly as possible, carefully pushing through thick bushes and hanging vines.

The smell reached them first.

Burned wood.

Ash.

Then they saw it.

Nestled beneath the massive roots of an ancient oak tree lay a small Pokémon.

Alex stopped instantly.

"...Charcadet?"

His voice barely escaped as a whisper.

The little Fire-type looked terrible.

Its crimson armor was cracked in several places, with black scorch marks covering most of its body. The flames burning upon its shoulders flickered weakly, rising and falling as though even they lacked the strength to stay lit.

Bruises covered its arms.

Fresh cuts marked its legs.

It looked exhausted.

No...

It looked broken.

Alex's eyes widened.

"That doesn't make any sense."

He looked around the forest instinctively.

"Charcadet live in Paldea..."

His gaze returned to the injured Pokémon.

"So how are you here?"

As if sensing them, Charcadet slowly opened its eyes.

The instant it saw Alex and Riolu...

It reacted.

Its flames flared brighter.

Not from confidence.

From fear.

It forced itself upright despite its injuries, taking an unsteady step backward.

Its entire body trembled.

Alex immediately stopped moving.

"Hey..."

His voice became much softer.

"It's okay."

He slowly lifted both hands.

"I'm not going to hurt you."

Charcadet didn't believe him.

It hissed weakly.

Its stance was unstable, but it refused to let its guard down.

Alex remained exactly where he was.

He knew that look.

He had seen it before.

In Riolu.

Then...

His eyes drifted downward.

Around Charcadet's ankle was a thick metal restraint.

Part of a broken chain still hung from it.

Alex's expression changed immediately.

His stomach twisted.

The chain wasn't old.

It had been broken recently.

His gaze slowly traveled across Charcadet's body once more.

The bruises.

The cracked armor.

The older scars hidden beneath the newer wounds.

None of those had been caused by wild Pokémon.

"...Someone did this to you."

His voice was barely audible.

Charcadet instinctively stepped back another pace.

The broken chain scraped softly across the roots beneath its feet.

Alex lowered his hands.

"I'm sorry."

He wasn't apologizing for himself.

He was apologizing for humanity.

For whoever had treated this little Pokémon like nothing more than property.

Neither of them moved.

The forest became completely still.

Then Riolu quietly walked forward.

Alex looked toward him but said nothing.

The little Fighting-type stopped several feet away from Charcadet before slowly sitting down.

He made no attempt to approach further.

He simply waited.

Charcadet watched him cautiously.

Riolu gently raised one arm.

The bite marks from the Mightyena were still visible beneath his fur.

Then he touched one of the healing bruises on his shoulder.

Finally...

He looked back at Charcadet.

He didn't need words.

They had both suffered.

They had both been hurt.

Charcadet stared at Riolu for several long moments.

Then...

Its flames settled slightly.

Not completely.

But enough.

Alex noticed immediately.

Hope flickered inside his chest.

Very slowly, he looked around.

"If you've been here for a while..."

His eyes settled on a faint shimmer between the trees.

"...there should be water nearby."

He followed the gentle sound of flowing water until he found a narrow stream weaving through the forest.

Kneeling beside it, he cupped his hands together, but the water slipped through his fingers before he could carry much of it.

"...Think, Alex."

His eyes searched the forest floor.

A few moments later, he spotted several broad leaves growing near the stream's edge.

Carefully, he folded one into the shape of a shallow bowl, weaving a thin vine through it to help it keep its form.

It wasn't perfect.

Water dripped slowly from one side.

But it would last long enough.

Alex carefully carried the leaf back toward Charcadet.

Instead of offering it directly...

He knelt several feet away and gently placed it on the ground.

Then he backed away.

"I know you don't trust me."

His voice remained calm.

"You don't have to."

He nodded toward the water.

"But you look thirsty."

"Drink..."

"...only if you want to."

For several long seconds...

Nothing happened.

Charcadet looked at Alex.

Then at Riolu.

Then at the small leaf bowl resting on the ground.

Slowly...

Very slowly...

The little Fire-type limped forward.

Every step looked painful.

When it finally reached the water, it lowered its head cautiously before taking a small sip.

Then another.

Then another.

Within seconds, it was drinking desperately, as though it hadn't had clean water in days.

Alex quietly looked away.

He didn't want Charcadet to feel embarrassed.

When the little Fire-type finally finished, it sat down heavily, breathing much more steadily than before.

Its eyes met Alex's once again.

The fear was still there.

But it wasn't alone anymore.

Now...

There was curiosity.

Alex smiled gently.

"I guess introductions are in order."

He rested a hand against his chest.

"My name's Alex."

He pointed toward the blue Pokémon sitting nearby.

"And this is Riolu."

Riolu smiled and gave a small wave.

For a moment, Charcadet simply stared at them.

Then...

Ever so slightly...

It lowered its head.

Not in submission.

Not in fear.

But in acknowledgment.

It was a tiny gesture.

Barely noticeable.

Yet to Alex...

It felt like the first step toward something neither of them had expected to find in this endless forest.

A friend.

The forest had grown quieter.

The gentle breeze continued to sway the branches overhead, carrying away the last traces of tension that had lingered between the three of them. Sunlight filtered through the leaves in scattered beams, warming the clearing where Alex, Riolu, and Charcadet rested.

For the first time in what felt like forever...

Everything was calm.

Alex sat beneath the massive oak, watching Charcadet from the corner of his eye.

The little Fire-type remained cautious, though not frightened anymore. Every now and then, it glanced toward Riolu, who answered with the occasional reassuring smile.

Alex noticed something.

Charcadet wasn't used to resting.

Every small sound made it tense.

Every snapping branch caused the flames on its shoulders to flare instinctively.

Whoever had owned it...

Hadn't shown it kindness.

Alex clenched his fists.

"No Pokémon deserves that."

He slowly walked over before kneeling several feet away, careful not to invade the Fire-type's space.

"Those wounds..."

His eyes followed the cracked armor covering Charcadet's body.

"...they're going to take time."

Charcadet looked away.

Alex sighed softly.

"I wish I could do more."

He searched the nearby bushes until he found several Oran Berries growing beneath a fallen log.

They weren't many.

Only three.

He picked them carefully before returning.

Holding one out, he spoke gently.

"They helped Riolu."

He smiled.

"They should help you too."

Charcadet hesitated.

Its eyes shifted toward Riolu.

The Fighting-type immediately picked up one of the berries himself and took a large bite before smiling happily.

"...Rio!"

Almost as if to say,

"See? They're safe."

Charcadet stared for another few moments before finally accepting the berry.

Its movements were slow.

Careful.

Almost expecting someone to snatch the food away.

Alex looked away again, pretending not to notice.

The little Pokémon deserved to eat without feeling watched.

Several quiet minutes passed.

The tension gradually melted away.

Charcadet's flames burned a little brighter.

Its breathing became steadier.

Alex smiled to himself.

"Maybe..."

"Maybe you're going to be okay."

Without warning...

The forest exploded.

A roar thundered through the trees.

Birds scattered into the sky in terrified flocks.

The ground shook violently beneath Alex's feet.

His smile vanished instantly.

"...Riolu."

The Fighting-type was already standing.

His ears stood straight.

Every muscle in his body tightened.

Another roar echoed through the forest.

Closer.

Much closer.

Branches snapped.

Entire bushes were crushed beneath something enormous forcing its way through the undergrowth.

Alex's heartbeat accelerated.

"...Something big."

Very big.

Then it appeared.

A massive Ursaring burst through the trees with terrifying force.

Its dark brown fur was matted with dirt and dried blood. Long scars crossed its shoulders, while one of its ears had been torn nearly in half during battles long past.

Its claws...

Were stained crimson.

Its golden eyes immediately locked onto the three of them.

Not curious.

Hungry.

Territorial.

Dangerous.

Alex instinctively stepped in front of Charcadet.

"Behind me!"

Charcadet froze.

The giant bear released another deafening roar before charging.

The ground trembled beneath every step.

It was unbelievably fast.

"Riolu!"

The little Fighting-type reacted instantly.

Blue aura surged around his paw.

"Force Palm!"

Riolu launched forward with everything he had.

His glowing strike slammed directly into Ursaring's chest.

The impact echoed through the clearing.

The giant bear barely moved.

Its expression twisted into annoyance.

With one casual swipe—

SMASH!

Riolu was launched across the clearing like a rag doll.

He slammed into the trunk of a nearby tree before collapsing onto the ground.

"...RIOLU!"

Alex's voice cracked.

The world seemed to slow.

No...

Not again.

Not someone else.

Not another person he cared about.

Ursaring continued charging.

Alex quickly grabbed a heavy branch from the forest floor.

It wasn't a weapon.

It barely counted as one.

But it was all he had.

The bear raised one massive claw.

Alex knew.

If that strike landed...

He would die.

Then—

A burst of orange fire erupted between them.

Charcadet.

The little Fire-type had stepped forward.

Its entire body trembled.

Its instincts screamed at it to run.

Its memories reminded it what happened whenever stronger opponents appeared.

Pain.

Chains.

Punishment.

Its legs refused to move.

Then...

It looked toward Alex.

Toward Riolu lying unconscious beneath the tree.

Toward the two people who had offered food...

Water...

Kindness...

Without asking for anything in return.

Something changed.

The fear remained.

But something stronger pushed through it.

Resolve.

Alex looked at Charcadet.

"...You don't have to fight."

The Fire-type slowly turned toward him.

Then shook its head.

Its flames blazed brighter than ever before.

Alex understood.

"...Alright."

He smiled.

"We'll fight together."

Ursaring roared once more before charging again.

"NOW!"

Charcadet sprinted forward.

Its right fist ignited.

Brilliant orange flames surrounded its arm.

"Fire Punch!"

The blazing strike crashed against Ursaring's front leg.

The giant bear roared in pain for the first time.

It staggered.

Only for a second.

But a second was enough.

Alex immediately grabbed a loose stone from the ground.

"HEY!"

He threw it with all his strength.

The rock struck Ursaring across the side of its head.

Not enough to injure it.

Just enough...

To make it look at him.

"Over here!"

The enraged bear turned.

Exactly as Alex wanted.

"Riolu!"

The little Fighting-type slowly pushed himself upright.

Blood trickled from the corner of his mouth.

His legs trembled.

But he stood.

Blue aura exploded around both paws.

He dashed forward.

"Force Palm!"

This time...

The strike landed directly across Ursaring's snout.

CRACK!

The massive Pokémon stumbled backward.

Charcadet seized the opportunity.

Alex's mind raced.

Fire wasn't enough.

They needed something unexpected.

His eyes widened.

"...Charcadet!"

The Fire-type looked toward him.

"Night Slash!"

For just a heartbeat...

Charcadet hesitated.

Then darkness gathered around its arm.

Shadow-like energy stretched into razor-sharp claws.

With one swift motion—

SLASH!

The attack carved across Ursaring's chest, leaving four deep black marks that seemed to burn even without fire.

The enormous bear staggered again.

Its breathing became ragged.

It looked from Riolu...

To Charcadet...

Then toward Alex.

For several tense seconds...

Nobody moved.

Finally...

Ursaring growled one last time.

Then turned.

It crashed back through the forest, disappearing between the trees as quickly as it had arrived.

Silence followed.

Alex remained frozen.

"...Did..."

He blinked.

"...Did we actually survive?"

Riolu gave a tired laugh before collapsing onto the grass.

"...Rio..."

Charcadet remained standing for another moment.

Then its legs gave out.

Alex rushed toward them immediately.

"You two..."

His voice shook.

"You actually did it."

He carefully helped Riolu sit upright before turning toward Charcadet.

The Fire-type looked exhausted.

Its flames had dimmed once more.

Yet...

There was something different in its eyes.

Confidence.

For the first time...

It believed in itself.

Alex smiled.

"I owe both of you my life."

He looked between them.

"I don't think I'll ever be able to repay that."

The three sat together for several quiet minutes, simply catching their breath while the forest slowly returned to normal around them.

Eventually...

Alex reached into his pocket.

Inside rested a single empty Poké Ball.

He had discovered it beside the remains of an unfortunate traveler several days earlier.

He had kept it.

Not because he planned to capture anything.

Because throwing it away had felt wrong.

Now...

He slowly placed it on the ground between himself and Charcadet.

He didn't pick it up.

He didn't throw it.

He simply slid it forward.

"...I don't want to force you."

Charcadet looked at the Poké Ball.

Then at Alex.

Alex spoke quietly.

"I know what it feels like to have your choices taken away."

His eyes drifted briefly toward the broken restraint around Charcadet's ankle.

"So if you stay with us..."

"It has to be because you want to."

"You'll never be my prisoner."

"You'll be my partner."

Silence filled the clearing.

Charcadet stared at the Poké Ball for a long time.

Its small hand slowly reached forward.

It rested on the smooth red surface.

The Fire-type closed its eyes.

Then...

With one gentle tap...

The Poké Ball opened.

A beam of soft red light surrounded Charcadet.

There was no struggle.

No resistance.

Only acceptance.

The ball closed.

Once.

Twice.

Click.

Alex stared at it silently.

Then...

A smile spread across his face.

A genuine one.

He picked up the Poké Ball carefully.

"...Welcome to the team."

Riolu smiled brightly beside him.

"...Rio."

That evening, the three shared the last of their berries around a small campfire.

The flames danced quietly beneath the darkening sky.

Riolu eventually leaned against Alex's shoulder, already half asleep.

Across the fire, Charcadet watched them for several long moments.

Then...

Very slowly...

The little Fire-type moved closer.

Not much.

Just enough to join the circle.

Alex noticed.

He smiled but said nothing.

Some things didn't need words.

Only a few days ago, he had woken up completely alone in a world that terrified him.

Now...

As he looked at the two Pokémon resting beside him, he realized something.

He still didn't know what tomorrow would bring.

The forest remained dangerous.

The future remained uncertain.

But whatever challenges waited beyond the trees...

They would face them together.

And somehow...

That made this strange new world feel just a little more like home.
