Chapter 3 - Chapter 3 – The Will to Grow (remake)

The night settled over the forest once again.

Moonlight filtered through the towering branches, painting silver patterns across the earth while thousands of fireflies drifted lazily between the trees like tiny floating stars. The air had grown cool, carrying with it the scent of damp moss and distant pine, while the quiet chorus of nocturnal Pokémon echoed somewhere beyond the cave.

Everything was peaceful.

Yet Alex couldn't find peace.

He sat near the cave entrance with his arms resting across his knees, staring into the darkness beyond the trees. His body was exhausted after everything that had happened during the past two days, but every time he closed his eyes, the same image returned.

Yellow eyes.

Bared fangs.

The sharp resistance of stone piercing flesh.

The silence after the fight.

His fingers unconsciously tightened.

It wasn't the violence that disturbed him.

It was how quickly he'd accepted it.

The first time he'd held a weapon...

The first time he'd taken a life...

He thought he would fall apart.

Instead...

He had cleaned the blood from his hands.

Buried the memories beneath necessity.

And continued walking.

"...I'm not a monster."

His voice barely rose above a whisper.

The forest offered no answer.

Only silence.

Alex lowered his head.

"No..."

He quietly corrected himself.

"I'm just trying to survive."

The distinction mattered.

At least...

He hoped it did.

Soft footsteps interrupted his thoughts.

Riolu slowly emerged from deeper within the cave, carrying several freshly gathered berries between his small paws. The little Fighting-type still walked with a slight limp, his injuries not yet fully healed, but there was far more strength in his movements than there had been yesterday.

Without saying a word, Riolu held the berries out toward Alex.

Alex blinked.

"You went looking for these?"

Riolu nodded once.

Alex accepted them carefully.

"...Thanks."

His voice was softer now.

The berries weren't special.

They weren't even enough to satisfy his hunger.

But that wasn't why they mattered.

Someone had thought about him.

Someone had worried whether he had eaten.

It was such a simple gesture.

Yet in both of his lives...

It was one he had rarely experienced.

He slowly ate one berry while Riolu settled beside him.

Neither of them spoke.

Neither of them needed to.

The quiet companionship felt strangely comforting.

After several minutes, Alex finally broke the silence.

"I wasn't very good with people."

Riolu glanced toward him.

"In my old world..."

Alex gave a dry laugh.

"I could barely hold a conversation."

He stared toward the moon hanging above the trees.

"Crowds terrified me."

His smile slowly disappeared.

"I couldn't even order food without overthinking every word I wanted to say."

He paused.

"I spent most of my life alone."

The words left his mouth more easily than he expected.

Maybe because he wasn't speaking to another person.

Maybe because Riolu never judged him.

Alex looked down at the berry in his hand.

"I died there."

His voice remained calm.

"Probably without anyone noticing."

For a long moment, only the wind filled the silence.

Then Alex looked toward Riolu.

"And somehow..."

A faint smile appeared.

"I ended up here."

He gestured toward the endless forest surrounding them.

"A place where everything is stronger than me."

His eyes drifted toward the cave wall where faint bloodstains still remained.

"A place where surviving sometimes means killing."

He swallowed quietly.

"I still don't know if I'll ever get used to that."

Riolu watched him carefully.

Then, without hesitation, the little Pokémon extended one paw.

Alex looked down.

He hesitated.

Slowly...

He reached forward.

Their hands met.

Warm.

Alive.

Real.

A small smile crossed Alex's face.

"...I'm glad I met you."

Riolu's ears twitched slightly.

Neither of them spoke again.

They simply sat together beneath the stars until sleep finally claimed them both.

Morning arrived wrapped in a blanket of mist.

Cool fog drifted silently between the ancient trees, softening the sunlight into pale silver beams that reached through the canopy. Tiny droplets of dew clung to leaves and branches, sparkling whenever the first rays of sunlight broke through.

The clearing outside the cave had already begun to change.

Broken branches lay scattered across the ground.

Several tree trunks carried fresh cracks from Force Palm.

The earth itself had become uneven beneath countless footsteps.

Alex stood in the center of the clearing with his arms folded.

Riolu waited opposite him.

"We survived."

Alex's voice was calm.

"But surviving yesterday won't save us tomorrow."

Riolu's expression immediately sharpened.

"If this world has taught me anything..."

Alex looked around the forest.

"...it's that no one's coming to rescue us."

He met Riolu's gaze.

"If we want to live..."

"We get stronger."

Riolu nodded firmly.

Alex had spent part of the early morning preparing the clearing.

Several thick logs hung from sturdy vines, swaying gently in the breeze to create moving targets. Smaller branches had been arranged into narrow obstacles that forced quick footwork, while scattered rocks created uneven terrain that punished careless movement.

It wasn't much.

But it was enough to begin.

"First exercise."

Alex pointed toward the swinging logs.

"Force Palm."

"Don't hit where the target is."

He picked up a small stick and gently nudged one of the hanging logs.

It began swinging.

"Hit where it's going to be."

Riolu narrowed his eyes.

Then burst forward.

His first strike barely grazed the log.

"Again."

The second landed cleanly.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Every successful hit came a little faster than the last.

Alex watched carefully.

"Your power is fine."

"What you need is precision."

Riolu continued striking until sweat soaked his fur.

His breathing grew heavier.

His movements slowed.

Still...

He refused to stop.

"Come on, Riolu."

Alex's voice remained encouraging.

"I know you've got more in you."

Another strike.

Cleaner.

More controlled.

Alex smiled.

"There it is."

The little Fighting-type attacked again and again until the skin on his paws began splitting from repeated impacts.

Only then did Alex raise a hand.

"Enough."

Riolu prepared to attack again anyway.

Alex stepped forward and gently caught his wrist.

"I said enough."

Riolu looked away.

Almost embarrassed.

Alex crouched beside him and handed over another berry.

"Pushing yourself is good."

He smiled faintly.

"Breaking yourself isn't."

Riolu quietly accepted the berry.

After several minutes of rest, Alex stood once more.

"One more thing."

He picked up a sturdy branch from the ground and held it like a spear.

Riolu tilted his head.

"...Ri?"

"I want you to fight me."

The little Pokémon blinked.

Alex nodded.

"I'm serious."

He raised the branch into a defensive stance.

"Trees don't think."

"I do."

"You'll learn more fighting someone who's trying to outsmart you than something standing still."

Riolu hesitated.

Then lowered his stance.

The battle began instantly.

Quick Attack.

Alex barely stepped aside in time.

The branch intercepted Riolu's Metal Claw with a sharp crack.

"Good."

Alex pivoted away.

"But you committed too much."

Riolu landed gracefully before immediately changing direction.

This time he feinted left.

Then attacked from the right.

Alex barely managed to block.

"Better."

Riolu smiled.

He was learning.

Moments later, Force Palm struck Alex square in the ribs before he could react.

The impact sent him stumbling backward several steps.

He gasped.

"...Okay."

He rubbed his side while laughing softly.

"That one definitely hurt."

Riolu immediately looked concerned.

Alex shook his head.

"No."

His grin widened.

"That's exactly what I wanted."

He lowered the branch.

"You're adapting."

The training continued until the sun stood high above the forest.

By the time they finally stopped, both of them collapsed onto the grass, breathing heavily.

Alex's arms felt like lead.

Fresh bruises covered his body.

Riolu's paws were sore, and every muscle in his body trembled from exhaustion.

Neither of them cared.

For the first time since arriving in this world...

Alex laughed.

Not a nervous laugh.

Not a forced one.

A genuine laugh.

Riolu laughed with him.

The sound echoed through the clearing before disappearing into the endless forest.

Alex reached over and gently ruffled Riolu's ears.

"One day..."

He smiled.

"You're going to be terrifying."

Riolu puffed out his chest proudly.

Alex chuckled.

"And I'll be able to say..."

"I helped you get there."

As evening slowly settled over the forest once again, they returned to their small cave.

Alex built a modest fire while Riolu arranged the last of their berries between them.

Tomorrow would bring more challenges.

More training.

More hunting.

More uncertainty.

But tonight...

For the first time since arriving in this world...

Alex wasn't afraid to fall asleep.

When nightmares eventually found him, they weren't quite as overwhelming as before.

Somewhere during the night...

Riolu quietly rested one paw against Alex's chest.

A silent promise.

Neither of them would have to face tomorrow alone.
