It wrote itself as they walked.
Every step Kael took, a line of black appeared under his boot. Every step Veyr took, the line thickened. Two Authors. One path.
`[CONVERGENCE: 17%]`
`[FRACTURE STABILITY: 0.3%]`
The number hadn't moved since they Overclocked.
"It's counting down," Kael said. He didn't stop walking. "To what?"
`CONTACT,` Veyr's text said.
`WHEN THE ROAD MEETS THE PEN.`
East. Always east. Where the sky was a scar.
The Fractured Lands changed the further they went.
Hour 1: Floating stone.
Hour 3: Rain that fell up, then sideways, then forgot it was rain.
Hour 6: Silence. No wind. No birds. Only the sound of ink on air.
The rules were thinner here.
*[The First Law Wall – Hour 7]*
They hit it at noon.
A wall. Not stone. Words.
`[GRAVITY: REVERSED]`
It stretched from ground to broken sky. Ten miles wide. The same law from the pen in Chapter 15.
On this side: down was down.
On that side: down was up.
Kael touched it. His hand went numb.
`AUTHOR 01'S TERRITORY BEGINS HERE,` Veyr said.
`HE WRITES BORDERS.`
Kael looked at the wall. Then at his Book. "Can we Copy it?"
Veyr's text flickered.
`NO.`
`YOU CAN'T COPY A LAW THAT SAYS YOU CAN'T.`
Kael smiled. "Then we don't Copy. We write."
He opened the Book. Blood from his lip. Ink from his crack.
He wrote:
_Rule: Gravity is a suggestion._
The wall cracked. Not shattered. Cracked. A single line, from top to bottom.
Kael stepped through.
The world flipped.
They fell up.
Veyr caught Kael's wrist. His cracked Book slammed to the ground — which was now the sky.
`ANCHOR,` Veyr wrote in the air.
They stopped.
`[CONVERGENCE: 19%]`
Kael was bleeding from his nose again. "He felt that."
`YES,` Veyr said.
`AUTHOR 01 KNOWS WE ARE HERE.`
*[The Field of Pens]*
Past the wall was a field.
Millions of pens. Black. Floating. Pointed at the sky.
Each one was writing.
`[TIME: SLOWED]`
`[MEMORY: ERASED]`
`[DOUBT: MANDATORY]`
The air was heavy.
Kael's thoughts slowed. "Veyr… I can't…"
`DO NOT READ THEM,` Veyr said. His text was sharp.
`AUTHOR 01 TRAPS YOU WITH COMPREHENSION.`
Kael closed his eyes. "Then we walk blind."
They walked. Through the field. Pens turning to follow them. Writing laws at their backs.
One law hit Kael's shoulder: `[PAIN: AMPLIFIED]`
He screamed. The crack on his neck flared to 0.2%.
Veyr grabbed him. Tore the page from his own Book. Wrote:
`PAIN: NULL.`
He slapped it onto Kael's back.
The law shattered.
`[CONVERGENCE: 22%]`
`[AUTHOR BOND: STRAINED]`
"Don't do that again," Kael gasped. "You'll crack yourself."
Veyr's text was quiet.
`BROTHER.`
*[Interlude: Author 01's Throne]*
Far east.
A throne of books. A figure with no face.
Before it: a pool of ink. In the pool: Kael and Veyr. Walking.
The figure lifted a pen. The size of a tower.
It wrote one word in the pool.
`WAIT.`
The pens in the field stopped.
*[The Broken City's Echo – Hour 9]*
The field ended at a mirror.
Not glass. A city.
The Broken City. From Chapter 15. But whole.
Buildings intact. Streets straight. People walking.
Kael stopped. "That's… impossible."
`IT'S A COPY,` Veyr said.
`AUTHOR 01 COPIED THE CITY BEFORE IT BROKE.`
One of the people looked up. It was the woman. The ghost with `RUN` on her palm.
But she wasn't frozen now. She was smiling.
"Kael," she said. No sound. Only in his head.
Kael froze. "She's alive?"
`NO,` Veyr said.
`SHE IS AUTHOR 01'S MEMORY OF HER.`
The woman raised her hand. On her palm: `JOIN US.`
The whole city turned. Thousands of eyes. All on Kael.
`[CONVERGENCE: 28%]`
Kael's Book shook. Pages flipping fast.
`SHE TRIED TO COPY ESCAPE. THE FRACTURE COPIED HER INSTEAD.`
The Book's words from Chapter 15.
Kael understood. "This isn't a city. It's a trap."
Veyr drew his cracked Book. `WE BURN IT.`
"Wait," Kael said.
He walked forward. Alone.
The woman smiled wider. "You were Unwritten. Now you are Author. Come. Write with us."
Kael stopped three feet away.
He opened the Book.
He didn't write a rule. He wrote a name.
`[AUTHOR 03:???]`
The woman's smile broke.
`NO,` she said.
`THAT NAME IS ERASED.`
Kael closed the Book. "Then remember it."
The city cracked.
Like glass. Like paper.
The woman screamed without sound.
The whole copy collapsed into ink.
`[CONVERGENCE: 31%]`
Kael fell to his knees. Veyr was at his side instantly.
`YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE,` Veyr said.
`NOW HE KNOWS YOU KNOW.`
Kael wiped blood from his mouth. "Good."
*[The Road Ends – Hour 12]*
The ink-road stopped.
Not because they stopped. Because it hit something.
A door.
Black. No handle. Only text:
`AUTHOR 01`
Under it:
`[CONVERGENCE: 100%]`
Kael stood. His crack was at 0.1%. One more use and it would hit his heart.
Veyr stood beside him. His cracked Book was down to half its pages.
`THIS IS IT,` Veyr said.
`AFTER THIS, NO RETURN.`
Kael put his hand on the door. It was warm. Like the Book.
"Chapter 16," he said. "The Academy sent Wards. Author 01 sent laws. I sent a name."
He pushed.
The door opened.
Inside: darkness. And a throne.
And on the throne: a figure.
No face. Only text.
`HELLO, AUTHOR 04.`
Kael stepped in.
Veyr followed.
The door closed behind them.
