Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: Brother

The fracture in the sky didn't close.

It waited.

The figure on the other side stepped through like it was a doorway. Black robes. Hood up. The text on its face wasn't shifting. It was fixed. One phrase.

`HELLO, BROTHER.`

Kael's hand tightened on the Book. The ink-line on his collarbone burned cold.

`[FRACTURE STABILITY: STABLE]`

`[AUTHOR 05: DETECTED]`

"Brother," Kael said. He didn't move. "That's new."

The figure tilted its head. The hood shifted. Under it, no face. Only text. But different from the Archon. This text was hand-written. Messy. Like it was written in a hurry.

`AUTHOR 05`

`NAME: [REDACTED]`

`STATUS: UNSEALED`

"Cut the system tags," Kael said. "What do you want?"

`AUTHOR 05` lifted a hand. In it, a Book. Not the Book of Mythos. Smaller. Cracked down the center. Pages spilling light.

`I WANT THE SAME THING YOU DO.`

The voice wasn't sound. It was text in Kael's head.

`FREEDOM.`

*[The Fractured Lands]*

The ground between them was dead. No Wards. No Academy law. Only broken rules. Floating rocks. Rain falling up.

Kael didn't trust it. "If you wanted freedom, you wouldn't have come to me."

`AUTHOR 05` laughed. The text on its face changed.

`CORRECT. I CAME BECAUSE YOU LEFT.`

It pointed back at the Academy. A black speck on the horizon.

`THEY FEAR YOU NOW. THAT MEANS THEY'LL HUNT YOU. AND WHEN THEY HUNT YOU, THEY HUNT ME.`

Kael understood. "You're exposed."

`AUTHOR 05`'s Book flipped open on its own.

`I WAS SEALED FOR 300 YEARS. AUTHOR 02 ERASED MY NAME. AUTHOR 01 PUT ME IN THE VAULT. YOU CRACKED IT.`

So. The Vault wasn't just holding the Book. It was holding people.

Kael's grip loosened a fraction. "You're welcome."

`DON'T BE.`

The air snapped.

`AUTHOR 05` moved. No steps. It just wasn't there, then it was. Three feet away. The cracked Book slammed toward Kael's face.

Kael reacted. Not with thought. With Copy.

`COPY: MOTION.`

He stole the rule that said `things must travel distance to move`. For one second, distance didn't exist.

He was behind `AUTHOR 05`.

The cracked Book hit empty air.

`AUTHOR 05` turned. Slow. The text on its face changed again.

`INTERESTING.`

`YOU DON'T COPY TECHNIQUES.`

`YOU COPY LAWS.`

Kael didn't answer. He raised his Book.

"Who are you? Really."

`AUTHOR 05` was silent for three seconds. Then it lowered its hood.

There was no face. Only a page.

A page torn from a book. The same black paper as Kael's. On it, one line:

`AUTHOR 03:???`

Kael's blood went cold. "You're the missing one."

`I AM WHAT'S LEFT OF AUTHOR 03,` the text said.

`AFTER ERASURE. AFTER THE SEAL. AFTER YOU.`

*[The Rule of Two]*

`AUTHOR 05`'s cracked Book opened wide. Light poured out. Not mana. Ink.

It wrote in the air.

`RULE: TWO AUTHORS CANNOT EXIST IN ONE FRACTURE.`

The Fractured Lands groaned. The floating stones began to fall. The up-rain stopped mid-air.

Kael felt it. Pressure. Like the world was choosing.

`[WARNING: AUTHOR CONFLICT]`

`[FRACTURE STABILITY: DROPPING]`

`[0.8%...0.7%...]`

"No," Kael said. He'd just stabilized it.

`YES,` `AUTHOR 05` said.

`ONE OF US MUST WRITE. THE OTHER MUST BE WRITTEN.`

It raised its cracked Book.

`COPY: KAEL.`

Kael froze.

He felt it. A pull. Like someone was reading him. Every memory. Every Copy. Every Crack. Being lifted off the page.

The Book of Mythos in his hands grew hot.

`NO.`

He slammed his palm on the cover. Blood again. Ink again.

He wrote. Fast. Ugly.

_Rule: Two Authors can exist if one is not a copy._

The world hiccupped.

The pull stopped.

`AUTHOR 05` staggered. The text on its face glitched.

`ERROR. ILLOGICAL.`

`YOU CAN'T WRITE A RULE TO COUNTER A RULE.`

Kael was bleeding from his nose now. "Watch me."

He wrote again.

_Rule: The Original is not copied. The Copy is not original._

The fracture in the sky above them widened.

`AUTHOR 05` screamed. Not sound. Text. Letters scattering.

`YOU'RE BREAKING THE SYSTEM!`

"Good," Kael said. "It broke me first."

*[Interlude: Academy Watchtower]*

Lyra had a spyglass. Rhen stood beside her. Nina behind them.

They watched the two black lines in the distance.

"That's not a fight," Rhen said. "That's two pens on the same paper."

Nina's tablet was sparking. `REALITY OVERRIDE: CONFLICT. ZONE: UNSTABLE.`

"If one wins," Lyra said, "the other is erased."

She touched her wrist. The silver seam pulsed.

"Then we hope Kael writes faster."

*[Back to the Fractured Lands]*

`AUTHOR 05` was coming apart.

The text on its face was unraveling. Letters falling like ash.

`YOU… YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO…`

Kael stepped forward. The Book was shaking. His crack was burning up his neck.

`[FRACTURE STABILITY: 0.4%]`

One more rule and he'd pass out. Or worse.

He looked at `AUTHOR 05`. Really looked. It wasn't an enemy. It was a warning. What happened when an Author lost.

He lowered the Book.

"I'm not going to erase you."

`AUTHOR 05`'s text slowed.

`…WHY?`

"Because if I do," Kael said, "then I'm just Author 01."

He tore a page from his Book. Blank. He held it out.

"Write with me. Not against me."

`AUTHOR 05` stared at the page. The torn text on its face stopped falling.

For ten seconds, nothing.

Then. A hand. Made of text. Reached out.

It took the page.

`…BROTHER.`

The page filled. One word.

`ALLY.`

The fracture in the sky sealed.

`[FRACTURE STABILITY: STABLE]`

`[AUTHOR STATUS: 04 + 05. BOND: FORMED]`

Both of them dropped to their knees.

***_[Aftermath]

Night fell fast in the Fractured Lands.

`AUTHOR 05` sat across from Kael. Its hood was up again. The text now read:

`ALLY.`

"Name," Kael said.

`I DON'T HAVE ONE.`

"Then I'll give you one." Kael thought. "Veyr."

The text flickered. Then settled.

`VEYR. ACCEPTED.`

Veyr held up his cracked Book. "This is all I have left of Author 03. Fragments. Memories. Pain."

Kael nodded. "The Mythos keeps receipts."

They were quiet.

Finally, Veyr asked: `WHAT NOW, AUTHOR 04?`

Kael looked back at the Academy. Then forward, into the deeper Fractured Lands.

"Now," he said, "we find Author 01."

He opened the Book. A new page. Blank.

At the top, he wrote:

_Chapter 14. The Academy did nothing. So I found family.*

The Book hummed. Satisfied.
