The deafening vibration tearing through the air did not come from an explosive impact. It resonated from the ruined edge of the battlefield, carrying the horrific, grinding sound of tearing fabric and snapping wood.
Far in the distance, the bisected remains of Azzemude dragged themselves across the dirt. Braided sinew and woven flesh stitched rapidly back together, pulling the monster's two halves into a single terrifying whole. Without the flat white mask, his reformed face looked like a withered old man stretched over a theatrical corpse, sunken and warped beneath the cracked frame of his new body. Surging with newly reformed power, Azzemude charged across the field at blistering speed.
Stepping directly into the monster's path, Grant raised his hands to lock down the engagement space.
"Unconditional Surrender."
A thick, shimmering containment box slammed down over the two of them, sealing Grant and the sprinting nightmare together inside a single inescapable vault. Grant immediately dropped into a low, wide combat stance and crossed his heavy mechanical arms tight against his chest. Every exhaust port on his chassis locked wide open while brilliant lines of magical script flared wildly across his metal plating.
Azzemude's withered face twitched. His head tilted, nostrils flaring as if he had noticed something beneath the heat, metal, and battlefield smoke. "That smell," he rasped. "That old, rotten stink. It is on all of you."
"Reports say you are pretty good at taking damage," Grant announced smoothly over the rising hum of his internal furnace. "Let us see if you can take this."
Blistering heat flooded the enclosed arena. Waves of thermal energy washed over Azzemude, licking hungrily at his faded carnival attire. Instead of bracing for an attack, the monster simply began to vibrate, translating the immense atmospheric heat into a continuous, bass-heavy acoustic rumble.
Azzemude abandoned his will to fight, transitioning into a lazy, deliberate stride right through the center of the mounting fire. He walked straight up to the stationary Presidroid and slammed his carved wooden forehead directly against Grant's metal brow.
Staring deep into Grant's glowing optics, Azzemude offered a raspy, rumbling whisper. "Please. If you can kill me, do it. Just do it. I would not mind being dead again."
After a brief pause, he erupted into manic laughter. "Do it. Now! Ha!"
Grant refused to answer. He held his ground and cranked his internal temperature to cataclysmic levels.
The air inside the box turned blindingly bright. The outer edges of Azzemude's layered clothing and woven skin began to burn, vibrating rapidly until the tissue crumbled into floating ash.
Azzemude cackled with pure, unrestrained delight. "More!" he screamed, his voice warbling from the intense oscillation. "Do it! Burn me! Do it!"
The sheer concentration of the thermal output finally overcame Grant's own magical protections. The fabric of his suit caught fire and burned away into nothingness, leaving his bare metal chassis exposed to the raging inferno. The extreme heat began soaking directly into his plating, raising his internal systems to dangerously critical thresholds.
Watching the containment box glow on one of the drone feeds, Roy leaned forward on the Fireside Ascent, panic cutting through his voice. "Grant, let him go! We can beat him a different way!"
"No," Grant replied, his calm voice transmitting over the comm. "I will have nothing but unconditional surrender."
Grant pushed his core past every programmed safety limit. Remaining firmly locked forehead-to-forehead with the burning monster, the Presidroid continued to amplify the inferno until a sharp internal pop cracked through his right shoulder. A burst of superheated vapor blasted out between the seams of his plating, and the light inside the containment box dimmed for one dangerous second as his heat production faltered.
Azzemude's withered face twisted with sudden delight. "Weakling! There it is!" he screamed through the rumbling fire. "There it is! Break open for me!"
Grant's fingers dug harder into his own forearms. The magical script across his chassis staggered, caught itself, and flared brighter than before as he forced the damaged system back into line. The inferno surged again, hotter and denser, pressing against the walls of the containment box until the air itself seemed ready to ignite.
Azzemude howled with hysterical, booming laughter as his body steadily disintegrated into burning flakes. "We die as one! Victory... married to defeat! Sweet silence... here comes the sweet silence!"
A low, mechanical chuckle escaped Grant's vocal processor. The quiet sound built rapidly, catching the frequency of the monster's pitch. Within seconds, both Grant and Azzemude were screaming manic, psychotic laughter straight into each other's faces while the air around them burned into solid fire.
Grant's steel plating shifted from a dull, heavy red into a blinding, radiant yellow. He glowed like a miniature sun trapped inside a glass box.
Azzemude's laughter finally broke into violent static as the intense heat overwhelmed his damage conversion capabilities. The interwoven sinew and cracking wood burned away entirely, reducing the massive theatrical monster to a floating cloud of nothingness.
The shimmering barrier popped, releasing a massive shockwave of displaced heat across the broken ground. Grant dropped heavily onto one knee, his bright yellow plating sizzling violently in the cool subterranean air.
"Grant!" Roy shouted over the comms. "Grant, answer me!"
"I do not think I can do anything for the rest of this battle," Grant said, his vocal processor warping through the strain of the heat damage. "Put me in a cool place, perhaps. And don't consider this... my... unconditional... surren... der..."
His voice cut out as his core temperature triggered an automatic partial shutdown, locking his glowing joints firmly in place.
Roy's face went pale on the drone feed. "No. No, no, no. Serenity, tell me what I am looking at. Eisenhower, get him to safety. Somebody tell me he is not dead."
Eisenhower reached the collapsed Presidroid first. "He is completely fine, Captain," he assured Roy. "He is simply recovering his systems."
Takara hurried in beside him, clutching her injured arm against her chest as her eyes locked onto Grant's damaged shoulder. "That was his right side," she said, voice thinning. "That was the side from the throw."
Eisenhower knelt beside Grant and scanned the warped plating. "His right brachial cable-junction reservoir was compromised during the amped throw."
Takara stared at him. "Reservoir? I thought only base models had those."
"Grant is effectively a perfected version of that design," Eisenhower said. "A true unique prototype. One of only three entirely unique Presidroids. I assumed you knew."
The explanation made Takara look even worse. "Then I... I put the amplification through a system I did not even know he had. I thought it was a servo pathway. I thought..."
"The seal held until the heat load climbed," Eisenhower continued, calm and steady. "Then the synovial gel flashed under heat and pressure, rupturing the junction."
Takara swallowed hard, her mouth opening and closing around words that would not come out.
Eisenhower looked over at her. "You know him. If any blame or fault attaches to the attempt, he would say it is his alone."
Roy stared at Grant through the drone feed for another second, then forced himself to breathe. "Cool him down. And somebody keep eyes on the crater. I am done accepting dead monsters as dead just because they look dead."
