Chapter 69 - Chapter 69: The Harvest Festival

While the rest of the fleet prepared for the harvest festival, Yuu remained exactly where everyone expected her to be.

Working.

The doctor had promised herself a vacation.

That promise lasted approximately eight minutes.

Now several scanners floated around her while holographic screens projected data into the air.

"Chief was right."

The doctor adjusted her glasses.

"This world is fascinating."

Shipgirls and Nikkes alike had volunteered.

Partly because they trusted her.

Partly because they wanted the leveling system.

And partly because saying no to Yuu after she became excited about research was surprisingly difficult.

So one by one they underwent scans.

=================

Belfast represented the Light Cruisers.

Prinz Eugen the Heavy Cruisers.

Laffey the Destroyers.

Vestal and Akashi the Repair Ships.

Illustrious the Light Carriers.

Yorktown the Fleet Carriers.

Kaguya the Arcane Shipgirls.

Wales the Battleships.

Mary and Pepper for Nikkes.

Momo and Kyon for Tsukimimi.

=================

The doctor spent hours comparing results.

The findings were astonishing.

"Structurally."

Yuu enlarged several holograms.

"Shipgirls are remarkably close to humans."

Mary and Pepper looked surprised.

"They are?"

Yuu nodded.

"Far closer than I expected."

The doctor rotated Belfast's scan.

"Skeletal structure."

"Musculature."

"Organ systems."

"Neurological pathways."

The image rotated.

"All broadly human."

Then another layer appeared.

A glowing network hidden beneath the body.

"Until you reach this."

The shipgirls immediately recognized it.

Their connection to their rigging.

The Wisdom Cubes.

The source of their power.

The doctor's eyes lit up.

"This changes everything."

The hologram shifted again.

Showing Akashi.

The catgirl immediately puffed out her chest.

"Akashi is special nyaa."

"That you are."

Yuu admitted.

Several scans appeared.

Akagi.

Kaga.

Akashi.

Maya.

Choukai.

The doctor pointed toward the fox ears.

Then the cat ears.

Then the wolf ears.

"The animal traits are genuine."

That surprised several people.

"Genuine?"

Yorktown asked.

Yuu nodded.

"They aren't cosmetic."

The scans zoomed in.

"The ears are connected."

"The tails possess musculature."

"The nervous systems have adapted around them."

Akashi's tail immediately stood upright.

"Nyaa?"

The doctor smiled.

"Your hearing is superior."

The catgirl grinned.

"Of course nyaa."

Akagi folded her arms.

"What about foxes?"

Yuu pulled up another graph.

"Enhanced sensory perception."

"Improved balance."

"Higher reaction speed."

Akagi immediately looked smug.

Kaga looked smug too.

Though she'd never admit it.

The doctor continued.

"The fascinating part."

Everyone leaned forward.

"You're not finished evolving."

Silence.

"What?"

Maya blinked.

Yuu nodded.

The scans expanded.

Showing growth pathways.

Potential.

Dormant systems.

Unutilized capacity.

"Every shipgirl I've scanned."

The doctor pointed at the data.

"Possesses room to grow."

Her smile widened.

"A lot of room."

Yorktown looked surprised.

"After all these years?"

"Especially after all these years."

Yuu nodded.

"The framework already exists."

The doctor pointed toward their rigging interfaces.

"Your bodies were designed to improve."

"To adapt."

"To synchronize with stronger equipment."

Yuuki folded his arms.

"Meaning the leveling system is possible."

The doctor nodded immediately.

"More than possible."

Several shipgirls perked up.

Even Maya.

Even Choukai.

Even Houshou.

Then Yuu switched to another dataset.

The Nikkes.

Immediately the holograms changed.

Mechanical pathways appeared.

Artificial musculature.

Energy systems.

Weapon synchronization nodes.

The differences were dramatic.

"Nikkes are completely different."

Rapi folded her arms.

"How so?"

The doctor pointed toward the scans.

"Your bodies are essentially combat platforms."

The Nikkes nodded.

That wasn't surprising.

What surprised them came next.

"You don't carry rigging."

The hologram enlarged.

"But your bodies are weapon amplifiers."

Several shipgirls blinked.

"Weapon amplifiers?"

Yuu nodded.

The doctor pointed toward Neon.

"An ordinary rifle."

Then toward Rapi.

"An ordinary assault rifle."

Then toward Anis.

"An ordinary launcher."

The doctor smiled.

"In human hands."

The hologram displayed comparison figures.

"They would be dangerous."

Then the figures multiplied.

"In a Nikke's hands."

The numbers skyrocketed.

The shipgirls widened their eyes.

"You're kidding."

Belfast muttered.

Yuu shook her head.

"The weapon isn't the threat."

The doctor pointed toward the Nikkes.

"You are."

The scans showed it clearly.

Their bodies enhanced.

Amplified.

Strengthened.

Every projectile they fired.

Every shell.

Every bullet.

Every rocket.

Was transformed through the Nikke systems.

An ordinary round became something far deadlier.

"Anti-aircraft caliber."

"Armor-piercing capability."

"Enhanced kinetic output."

The doctor looked impressed.

"Frankly."

The hologram rotated.

"It's absurd."

Neon immediately became happy.

"Firepower!"

"Firepower."

Yuu agreed.

The Nikke smiled proudly.

The doctor then compared the two groups.

Shipgirls.

Nikkes.

Different strengths.

Different weaknesses.

"If a shipgirl and a Nikke fought."

Several girls immediately became interested.

Yuu pointed toward Yorktown's scan.

Then toward Rapi's.

"The shipgirl wins."

The answer came immediately.

Several Nikkes sighed.

"That fast?"

Anis asked.

The doctor nodded.

"The difference in durability."

"The difference in output."

"The difference in defensive capability."

"The rigging alone changes everything."

The Nikkes understood.

That wasn't an insult.

Just reality.

Then Yuu smiled.

"However."

The word immediately caught attention.

"Nikkes excel elsewhere."

The hologram shifted.

Urban environments.

Forests.

Ruins.

Mountains.

Close-quarters battlefields.

Ground operations.

The simulations changed drastically.

"Nikkes are superior ground combat specialists."

Rapi nodded.

That made sense.

The doctor pointed toward the simulations.

"Mobility."

"Coordination."

"Infantry tactics."

"Urban warfare."

"Reconnaissance."

"Specialized squad operations."

The Nikkes dominated those categories.

The doctor smiled.

"Which means."

She looked toward both groups.

"You complement each other perfectly."

Shipgirls.

Masters of naval warfare.

Powerful frontline combatants.

Nikkes.

Elite ground specialists.

Experts at operating where shipgirls struggled.

Yuuki nodded.

"Exactly."

The commander looked toward the growing fleet.

"We don't need one group replacing the other."

The doctor smiled.

"We need both."

Then Yuu glanced toward her notes.

Toward the countless pages of data.

The leveling framework.

The animal traits.

The shipgirl evolution pathways.

The Nikke enhancement systems.

The Arcane shipgirls.

The fairies.

The Tsukimimi.

The doctor smiled.

For the first time since arriving on Autumn Isle—

She could see it.

A path forward.

A way to let Shipgirls and Nikkes grow stronger together.

And if her calculations were correct—

This was only the beginning.

The moment Yuu finished compiling her preliminary data on Shipgirls and Nikkes, her attention naturally shifted toward the one individual who had continuously produced anomalies throughout every scan.

Kaguya.

The fox-eared Arcane Shipgirl sat calmly beneath a nearby tree, sipping tea as though being identified as a walking violation of conventional naval warfare was the most normal thing in the world.

Yuu adjusted her glasses and projected the scans into the air.

"Chief... this one doesn't fit into any category."

Yuuki laughed.

"That's because she wasn't designed to."

That immediately attracted everyone's attention.

Even Maya, Choukai, and Houshou moved closer.

The newer arrivals had already realized Kaguya was extraordinary, but they still didn't fully understand exactly what she was.

Yuuki activated a holographic display.

Several classifications appeared.

Priority.

Decisive.

Arcane.

"The Azur Lane factions eventually discovered that standard Shipgirls were reaching their limits. Sirens kept evolving. Their warships became stronger. Their elites became stronger. Then came the larger constructs."

The display shifted to images of increasingly powerful Siren warships.

"To counter them, the factions began developing a new generation."

The Priority classification illuminated.

"Priority Shipgirls. These were designed to be significantly stronger than ordinary Shipgirls. Faster adaptation, more powerful riggings, greater combat efficiency."

Several girls nodded.

That seemed reasonable.

Then the next category illuminated.

"Decisive Shipgirls."

The hologram shifted again.

"Decisive-class units surpassed Priority models. They represented years of accumulated combat data, technological advancements, and specialized Wisdom Cube engineering."

Yuu nodded thoughtfully.

"So each generation was an attempt to overcome the previous limitations."

"Exactly."

Yuuki pointed toward the display.

"For a while, Decisive Shipgirls worked."

Then his expression became more serious.

"Unfortunately, the Sirens didn't stop evolving."

The hologram shifted.

Larger warships appeared.

Stranger constructs.

Weapons beyond anything seen previously.

Then images resembling giant mechanical fortresses.

"The Sirens adapted."

Another image appeared.

A monstrous Rapture formation.

"And then the Raptures appeared."

Several Nikkes frowned.

They knew all too well how terrifying Rapture evolution could become.

According to Friedrich's records, the enemies eventually reached a point where even Decisive Shipgirls were beginning to struggle.

That was when the factions began pursuing something completely different.

The final category illuminated.

Arcane.

Yuu immediately leaned forward.

"This is where things stop making sense, isn't it?"

"Pretty much."

Yuuki pointed toward Kaguya.

"Arcane Shipgirls were the result of merging magical cores with Wisdom Cubes."

Silence.

Yuu blinked.

"Excuse me?"

"Magic."

Kaguya smiled pleasantly.

"Actual magic."

The doctor rubbed her forehead.

"I was hoping you'd say advanced energy manipulation."

"Nay."

The fox shook her head.

"Tis magic."

The doctor looked physically pained.

Meanwhile, the hologram shifted toward Kaguya's scans.

Every graph immediately became chaotic.

Power readings fluctuated wildly.

Multiple energy signatures overlapped.

Several unknown systems appeared.

Then Kaguya stood.

"If thou wishes for a demonstration."

The fox smiled.

Golden particles gathered around her.

Magic flowed from her body.

The familiar fox tails behind her swayed.

Then enormous battleship riggings materialized behind her.

Massive cannons.

Heavy armor.

Shield systems.

The pressure alone caused several newer Shipgirls to widen their eyes.

The firepower was absurd.

"Super Battleship configuration."

Kaguya spoke casually.

Then the riggings dissolved.

The armor vanished.

The cannons disappeared.

A moment later, entirely different riggings emerged.

Flight decks.

Aircraft launch systems.

Carrier infrastructure.

"Super Carrier configuration."

The girls stared.

Before anyone could react, the riggings transformed again.

This time into sleek battlecruiser weaponry.

Then heavy cruiser armaments.

Then lighter destroyer-style systems.

Each transformation took only seconds.

The equipment adapted seamlessly.

As though Kaguya could simply decide what kind of ship she wanted to become.

The demonstration left everyone speechless.

Yuu slowly lowered her scanner.

"That's ridiculous."

"It truly is."

Yuuki agreed.

The commander pointed toward Kaguya.

"Arcane Shipgirls are not restricted by traditional classifications. Their magical cores allow them to alter their combat roles depending on the situation."

Yorktown folded her arms.

"Which means she can fill almost any role in a fleet."

"Exactly."

The commander nodded.

"If a fleet requires a carrier, she can become one."

"If a fleet requires a battleship, she can become one."

"If a fleet requires a fast attack unit, she can become one."

The versatility alone was terrifying.

Then Kaguya's feet left the ground.

The fox casually floated several meters into the air.

Flight.

Natural flight.

Not through aircraft.

Not through jet propulsion.

Not through riggings.

Simply flight.

Magic carried her effortlessly.

The newer Shipgirls stared.

Even Choukai looked stunned.

"You can just... fly?"

"Tis convenient."

Kaguya admitted.

The fox descended again.

"Arcane Shipgirls continuously upgrade themselves through magical cultivation. We refine our magical cores. Strengthen our bodies. Improve our riggings."

Yuu's eyes widened.

"So you're self-evolving."

"Precisely."

That revelation alone explained why Arcane Shipgirls were considered so dangerous.

They didn't merely receive upgrades.

They became their own upgrades.

Yuuki crossed his arms.

"That level of power is also why Arcane Shipgirls cannot truly be controlled by their factions."

Several girls looked surprised.

Kaguya nodded.

"Power beyond control inevitably creates fear."

The fox smiled softly.

"We are not commanded. We choose who we follow."

That explained many things.

It explained why Kaguya followed Yuuki.

It explained why Arcane Shipgirls operated independently.

It explained why they were hidden from public view.

A single Arcane Shipgirl could potentially overwhelm entire Siren fleets by herself.

Their power had become too great.

Yet despite all that power, Kaguya herself seemed strangely unconcerned by it.

In fact, her expression became slightly melancholic.

"Everyone always looks at our power."

The fox looked toward the other Shipgirls.

"They rarely look at what we lost."

The atmosphere became quieter.

Kaguya's smile softened.

"We are powerful."

Her tails swayed slowly.

"But power is not everything."

The fox looked toward Akagi.

Toward Kaga.

Toward Atago.

Toward the others.

"Most Arcane Shipgirls spend years isolated."

She folded her hands together.

"We are hidden."

"We are separated."

"We are treated as strategic assets rather than sisters."

No one interrupted.

Because many understood exactly what she meant.

Kaguya looked toward the gathered group.

For the first time, her smile became genuine.

"That is why I am happy here."

The fox laughed softly.

"I can annoy Akagi."

"Hey."

Akagi immediately protested.

Kaguya ignored her.

"I can tease Kaga."

The carrier sighed.

"As always."

"I can spend time with everyone."

The fox smiled warmly.

"Most importantly..."

Her gaze shifted toward Yuuki.

"I can simply be Kaguya."

The statement hit harder than any discussion about power.

Because beneath all the magical abilities, beneath the transformations, beneath the overwhelming strength...

Kaguya was still a Shipgirl.

A woman who wanted friends.

Comrades.

A family.

People who saw her as herself rather than as a weapon.

The fox looked around at the fleet.

"I may possess greater power than most Shipgirls."

Her expression softened.

"But I still need support."

Yorktown smiled.

"We all do."

Houshou nodded.

"Even mothers need support."

Rapi crossed her arms.

"No one wins alone."

Kaguya's smile widened.

"Exactly."

The fox looked genuinely happy.

Not because she had demonstrated her power.

Not because everyone was impressed.

But because, for the first time in a very long time, she no longer felt alone carrying it.

===================

The more Yuu studied the data, the more fascinated she became.

At first glance, Shipgirls appeared remarkably similar to humans.

Their skeletal structures were familiar.

Their musculature was familiar.

Their organs functioned similarly to human organs.

Even their neurological pathways shared many similarities.

Yet beneath that familiar appearance lay something entirely different.

Something engineered.

Something evolved.

Something that had been continuously adapting through Wisdom Cube technology for years.

Yuu projected dozens of scans into the air.

The more she examined them, the more distinct factional traits began appearing.

"Interesting..."

The doctor enlarged several comparative models.

"Very interesting."

Mary looked over her shoulder.

"What did you find?"

Yuu pointed toward Akashi's scan first.

The catgirl immediately stood proudly.

"I am special, nyaa."

"Surprisingly, yes."

Yuu admitted.

Akashi looked far too pleased by that answer.

The doctor highlighted several neural pathways.

"Animal-trait Shipgirls possess genuine biological adaptations."

The scans zoomed into the ears.

The tails.

The sensory systems.

"They're not cosmetic additions like I said before."

Yuu rotated the model.

"Their nervous systems have evolved around those features."

Akashi's ears twitched.

Kaguya's fox ears perked up.

Akagi, Kaga, Takao, Atago, Houshou, Maya and Choukai instinctively listened more carefully.

Yuu continued.

"Cat-type Shipgirls possess enhanced reflexes and instinctive response systems."

The display highlighted Akashi.

"Reaction times exceed normal human limits."

Akashi grinned.

"Nyaa."

The doctor ignored her.

"Their balance is also exceptional."

Then she shifted to Kaguya.

"Fox-type Shipgirls possess heightened sensory processing."

The hologram displayed neurological activity.

"Hearing."

"Environmental awareness."

"Threat detection."

"Pattern recognition."

Kaguya smiled.

"Tis useful when catching certain foxes attempting to sneak away."

Akagi and Kaga immediately looked elsewhere.

The group laughed.

Yuu moved on.

The scans shifted toward Houshou.

"Bird-type Shipgirls demonstrate enhanced visual processing."

The display zoomed in on the carrier's eyes.

"Superior distance perception."

"Target tracking."

"Long-range observation."

Houshou nodded.

"That would explain why I could often identify aircraft before others."

The doctor smiled.

"Exactly."

The adaptations weren't random.

They were functional.

Purpose-driven.

Integrated deeply into each Shipgirl's biology. The features were built into shipgirls as if its their natural talent.

In Yuuki's fleet, he has foxes, cats, wolves and birds. Imagine if more will come with different animal traits, Yuu couldn't wait to find out more about them.

Then she moved to factional comparisons of other than Sakura Empire.

That was where things became even more interesting.

The display separated into multiple categories.

Royal Navy.

Eagle Union.

Iron Blood.

Northern Parliament.

Each faction displayed distinct trends.

Not absolute rules.

But clear tendencies.

The doctor pointed toward IronBlood data first.

"They appear human."

The scans displayed Eugen, Hipper and Nimi.

"Yet their physical structure differs significantly."

Armor-density readings appeared.

Power output charts followed.

"They naturally favor heavier armor systems."

"Higher firepower output."

"Greater weapons integration."

Eugen smiled.

"We've always preferred bigger guns."

"That is becoming increasingly obvious."

Yuu replied.

The doctor shifted toward Eagle Union.

Yorktown's profile appeared.

Then Enterprise's archived data.

Then San Diego, Eldridge, Laffey and Vestal.

"Eagle Union Shipgirls possess remarkable durability."

The graphs showed sustained operational capacity.

Adaptability.

Damage tolerance.

Recovery efficiency.

"They simply refuse to stay down."

Yorktown laughed softly while eyeing her sister.

"That sounds familiar."

The doctor nodded.

"It should."

The display shifted again.

Royal Navy.

Prince of Wales, Illustrious, Belfast and Unicorn.

The numbers immediately jumped.

"Royal Navy Shipgirls excel in offensive output."

Several Royal Navy members looked pleased.

"Precision."

"Efficiency."

"Firepower optimization."

Wales crossed her arms proudly.

"A proper fleet should possess proper firepower."

Neon immediately pointed.

"I like her."

The others were not surprised.

The display shifted again.

Northern Parliament.

Avrora appeared.

Alongside archived records.

"Environmental resistance."

"Cold-weather performance."

"Operational endurance."

The statistics were absurd.

"They function in conditions that would cripple most fleets."

Avrora smiled.

"Mother Russia would be proud."

The doctor nodded.

"Frankly, it's terrifying."

Then Yuu stepped back and looked at the larger picture.

That was where her excitement truly began.

Because these weren't limitations.

They were foundations.

Foundations for growth.

The doctor highlighted dormant systems within multiple scans.

Potential pathways.

Adaptive biological structures.

Wisdom Cube interfaces.

Energy processing networks.

"They can become stronger."

The statement immediately drew attention.

Yuu pointed toward the data.

"Much stronger."

The doctor looked toward Yuuki.

"Their bodies were designed to adapt."

The commander nodded.

"That's what I was hoping you'd find."

Yuu smiled.

"Not only can they adapt."

She enlarged several pathways.

"They're almost perfectly suited for a custom leveling system."

That statement made everyone pause.

The doctor continued.

"Human GDI personnel require extensive augmentation before fully integrating the leveling framework."

The hologram displayed comparative diagrams.

"But Shipgirls already possess most of the necessary architecture."

Several girls blinked.

"What does that mean?"

Belfast asked.

Yuu smiled.

Yuu smiled as several girls looked increasingly confused.

The doctor enlarged a holographic image of a human cell.

Then another image appeared.

A tiny machine beside it.

"It means your bodies already understand growth."

The doctor pointed toward the Wisdom Cube networks floating above the display.

"I can send this data to Vergil. Once he receives it, he can begin modifying the Leveling System nanomachines specifically for Shipgirls and Nikkes."

Several girls immediately paid attention.

"Nanomachines?"

Ade tilted her head.

"Yes, dear Ade."

The doctor nodded.

"Once the framework is complete, we inject specialized nanomachines into your bodies. They register you into the GDI system, assign your designation, establish your membership status, and connect you to the Leveling Framework."

Soda blinked.

"Wait."

The maid looked confused.

"The Leveling System is just nanomachines?"

Yuu smiled.

"Not just nanomachines."

The doctor enlarged the hologram.

"Very complicated nanomachines."

That somehow did not make the explanation easier.

The girls stared.

The doctor sighed.

"Think of them as microscopic workers."

The hologram shifted.

Thousands of tiny machines appeared around a cell.

"They constantly monitor your body."

"Track your growth."

"Analyze improvements."

"Record combat experience."

"Manage stat progression."

The display zoomed into a single cell.

"A cell cannot truly be improved beyond its biological limitations."

The doctor pointed at the image.

"But it can be enhanced."

The nanomachines attached themselves to the holographic cell.

"When you gain a level, the nanomachines improve the performance of existing cells."

The cell brightened.

"Then, when those cells naturally die and are replaced..."

A new cell appeared.

"The replacement cell is upgraded by the nanomachines as well."

Several girls slowly began understanding.

"So your body keeps producing normal cells."

Yorktown said thoughtfully.

"And the nanomachines improve them every time."

"Exactly."

Yuu smiled.

"The nanomachines are what level up."

The doctor pointed toward the display.

"Your body adapts to the improvements they provide."

The hologram displayed a gradual progression.

Level 1.

Level 2.

Level 3.

The changes appeared small.

But they accumulated.

Over time.

Then San Diego raised her hand.

"Wait!"

Everyone turned toward her.

The cruiser looked unusually serious.

"If that's true..."

She pointed at the display.

"Why don't you just make us Level One Hundred immediately?"

Silence.

Several girls blinked.

Then Yuuki looked genuinely surprised.

"That's actually a good question."

San Diego immediately looked proud.

"I know."

The commander laughed.

Then activated another hologram.

This time showing a human body.

"Because your body would explode."

"..."

"..."

"..."

The smile immediately vanished from San Diego's face.

"What?"

The commander pointed toward the image.

"Your cells might be capable of functioning at Level One Hundred."

The display highlighted bones.

Muscles.

Organs.

Nerves.

"But the rest of your body wouldn't be ready."

The image cracked.

Systems failed.

Organs overloaded.

Muscles tore.

Bones fractured.

The girls winced.

"The body must adapt."

Yuuki folded his arms.

"That's why levels are gained gradually."

The display resumed.

Level 1.

Level 2.

Level 3.

Each stage showed adaptation.

"The nanomachines upgrade your cells."

"The body learns to use those upgraded cells."

"The skeleton adapts."

"The nervous system adapts."

"The organs adapt."

"The muscles adapt."

Only then could another level be safely added.

The commander pointed toward the hologram.

"Your body isn't leveling."

Several girls blinked.

"It isn't?"

Rapi asked.

Yuuki shook his head.

"The nanomachines are."

That answer confused them even more.

The commander smiled.

"The nanomachines continuously improve themselves."

"They learn."

"They adapt."

"They become better at improving your cells."

The hologram displayed the process.

Leveling up didn't directly strengthen the body.

It strengthened the nanomachines' ability to strengthen the body.

The realization spread slowly.

"Oh."

Anis blinked.

"That's actually terrifying."

"It is."

Yuu agreed.

The doctor looked almost proud of that fact.

"Which is why the system is so effective."

The display shifted again.

Strength.

Defense.

Intelligence.

Agility.

Each statistic appeared.

"As your nanomachines improve, they become better at enhancing your body's capabilities."

The numbers increased.

Higher strength.

Higher durability.

Faster reactions.

Improved tactical processing.

The doctor smiled.

"Shipgirls and Nikkes are especially suited for this because your bodies already adapt to equipment."

The display shifted toward riggings.

Then Nikke weapon systems.

"You already synchronize with external systems."

"You already evolve through upgrades."

"You already process combat experience."

The doctor pointed at the scans.

"The Leveling System simply formalizes that process."

Then Houshou raised a hand.

"How is this different from training?"

Yuu immediately smiled.

"Excellent question."

The display shifted once more.

A soldier appeared.

The soldier trained.

Gained muscle.

Improved.

Then stopped training.

The muscle mass slowly declined.

Performance decreased.

"Natural training is temporary."

The doctor pointed toward the image.

"If you stop training."

"The body eventually loses part of that improvement."

Several girls nodded.

That was common knowledge.

Then another image appeared.

A GDI soldier with the Leveling System.

The soldier trained.

Leveled up.

Improved.

Then stopped.

The improvements remained.

The girls widened their eyes.

"The levels stay?"

Choukai asked.

"Forever."

Yuu answered.

Silence followed.

The implications were enormous.

Every battle.

Every mission.

Every exercise.

Every accomplishment.

Permanent growth.

Permanent progression.

Permanent improvement.

The doctor nodded.

"Your effort becomes part of you."

The hologram glowed.

"The nanomachines preserve the gains."

Then Yuuki added one final point.

"If you leave the GDI."

The atmosphere immediately became quieter.

The commander folded his arms.

"The system is terminated."

Several girls blinked.

"What happens then?"

Maya asked.

"The nanomachines shut down."

The commander spoke calmly.

"The enhancements disappear."

"The levels disappear."

"The system's benefits disappear."

The wolf-eared cruiser looked surprised.

"So we'd lose everything?"

Yuuki shook his head.

"Not everything."

The commander smiled.

"You'd still keep your memories."

"Your experience."

"Your skills."

"Your knowledge."

"Everything you personally learned."

The hologram displayed a swordsman.

The levels vanished.

But the swordsmanship remained.

"The system cannot take away who you are."

The commander looked around at the gathered Shipgirls and Nikkes.

"It only takes away what GDI provided."

Silence followed.

Then Yuuki smiled.

"Personally."

The commander looked toward Yorktown.

Then Rapi.

Then Houshou.

Then Maya and Choukai.

"I hope none of you ever have a reason to leave."

The statement was simple.

Honest.

And somehow far warmer than all the technical explanations that had come before it.

Several girls smiled.

Because after everything they had been through—

Most of them were already thinking the same thing.

They had finally found a place worth staying.

Yuuki blinked when Yorktown answered first.

The carrier folded her arms and smiled.

"Commander, are you actually crazy?"

That immediately drew everyone's attention.

Yorktown shook her head before continuing.

"Who in their right mind would willingly leave the warmth and light of your heart?"

The words caught him completely off guard.

Several Shipgirls immediately nodded.

Even the newer arrivals.

Especially Houshou.

Especially Choukai.

Even Maya quietly agreed.

They had all felt it.

That strange warmth.

That sense of safety.

That feeling of being accepted.

Not because of what they could do.

Not because of how powerful they were.

But because Yuuki genuinely cared about them.

Eugen chuckled beside him.

The heavy cruiser wrapped an arm around his shoulder.

"Yorktown is right, Teddy Bear."

The silver-haired cruiser smiled lazily.

"The light is far too intoxicating."

Her crimson eyes softened slightly.

"Imagine trading a diamond for a piece of coal."

Several girls laughed.

Even Kaga nodded slightly.

The comparison was admittedly accurate.

Yuuki rubbed his forehead.

"You girls really know how to make a man embarrassed."

"Thou art merely hearing the truth."

Kaguya replied immediately.

The fox's tails swayed happily behind her.

Yuu watched the exchange before laughing softly.

"They got you there, Chief."

The doctor looked thoroughly amused.

The commander looked around at everyone gathered there.

The Shipgirls.

The Nikkes.

The fairies.

The Tsukimimi.

The friends he had reunited.

The allies he had found.

The family he was slowly building.

For a brief moment, he simply smiled.

"Thank you, girls."

The sincerity in his voice made several of them smile back.

Then Yuu adjusted her glasses and looked toward one of her floating displays.

"Well."

The doctor looked pleased.

"While everyone was busy being sentimental, I already transmitted all the collected data to Vergil."

That immediately got Yuuki's attention.

"You already sent it?"

"Of course."

Yuu looked mildly offended.

"Did you think I would wait?"

The commander laughed.

"Fair point."

The doctor tapped the hologram.

"If Vergil implements the modifications according to the data package I provided, we should have preliminary compatibility results by tomorrow."

The girls immediately perked up.

"Tomorrow?"

Anis repeated.

"That fast?"

Yuu nodded confidently.

"The framework already exists."

"The nanomachines already exist."

"The leveling infrastructure already exists."

"We merely need to adapt it for Shipgirls and Nikkes."

Her smile widened.

"If everything proceeds smoothly, all of you may receive access to the Leveling System before the Mother Whale operation."

Silence.

Then absolute excitement.

Neon's eyes practically sparkled.

"Wait."

The Nikke pointed dramatically.

"You mean we can level up during the battle?"

"Exactly."

Yuu nodded.

The doctor projected another display.

"The Mother Whale operation will be the perfect test environment."

The display showed hundreds.

Then thousands.

Then tens of thousands of enemies.

Several girls immediately understood.

Their eyes widened.

"Commander."

Rapi looked toward Yuuki.

"Are you saying..."

The commander grinned.

"The Mother Whale is basically a farming zone."

The entire group froze.

Then began imagining it.

A battlefield.

Thousands of enemies.

Every kill granting experience.

Every victory making them stronger.

Every level improving their bodies.

Their reactions.

Their endurance.

Their firepower.

Their intelligence.

Their durability.

Their speed.

It sounded absurd.

It sounded impossible.

It also sounded incredibly exciting.

"I feel like we're about to become characters inside a game."

Soda commented.

"Except the monsters are trying to kill us."

Ade added.

"That's usually how games work."

Anis replied.

The group laughed.

Then Yuuki activated another display.

A simple progression chart appeared.

Several girls leaned forward.

"You're probably wondering how strong you can become."

The commander pointed toward the graph.

"Let's use simple numbers."

The graph displayed Level One.

"Your current baseline."

Then Level Two appeared.

"Twice as effective."

Then Level Three.

"Three times."

Then Level Four.

Then Five.

Then Ten.

The graph continued rising.

The girls watched quietly.

The implications slowly sinking in.

Yorktown folded her arms.

"You mean to tell me that if this system works..."

The commander nodded.

"You won't remain limited by your current strength anymore."

The graph continued climbing.

Level Twenty.

Level Fifty.

Level One Hundred.

The values became increasingly ridiculous.

The girls exchanged glances.

Even Maya looked stunned.

Even Choukai.

Even Houshou.

The three newest arrivals were beginning to understand why GDI personnel could become so terrifying.

It wasn't merely technology.

It wasn't merely equipment.

It was growth.

Continuous growth.

The ability to keep becoming stronger.

The ability to never stagnate.

The ability to always move forward.

Then Yuuki shut off the display.

Immediately causing several girls to protest.

"Hey!"

Neon complained.

"I wanted to see higher levels."

The commander laughed.

"You can earn those levels yourself."

The Nikke immediately became motivated again.

Yorktown had been quietly listening to the discussion about levels, experience, and stat growth.

Then she raised a hand.

"If we receive the Leveling System, what exactly do we gain besides becoming stronger?"

Several girls immediately nodded.

That was a fair question.

Strength was nice.

Very nice.

But surely a system sophisticated enough to manage an entire GDI civilization offered more than simply increasing combat performance.

Yuuki smiled.

"Oh, quite a lot."

That answer immediately caught everyone's attention.

The commander activated a holographic display.

"The Leveling System isn't merely a progression framework."

He pointed toward the interface.

"It's also your personal terminal."

The display expanded.

Wallet functions.

Communication functions.

Mission management.

Inventory management.

Equipment management.

Personnel records like achievements or medals.

Navigation systems such as radar and map.

Several girls blinked.

"That's a lot."

Belfast commented.

Yuuki nodded.

"Every member of the GDI receives a personal interface."

The hologram shifted.

"You can access your credits directly."

"No need to carry physical money. You can even withdraw them in faction cities, the Ark or in Aqua."

The display showed transactions occurring instantly.

"Purchases."

"Transfers."

"Mission rewards."

"Bonuses."

"Everything is processed through the system."

Akashi immediately perked up.

"Nyaa?"

The cat's eyes sparkled.

"Digital credits nyaa?"

"Yes."

Yuuki immediately regretted answering.

The merchant catgirl looked delighted.

Then the commander continued.

"You can also communicate directly through the interface."

A communication screen appeared.

Messages.

Voice calls.

Video calls.

Mission channels.

Emergency alerts.

"Think of it as a phone that cannot be lost."

That immediately appealed to several girls.

Especially those who had spent ten years stranded on islands.

Then another menu appeared.

Mission notifications.

Quest boards.

Operation updates.

Combat reports.

"The system allows me to distribute missions."

Yuuki pointed toward the display.

"You'll receive alerts directly."

"Accept quests."

"Track objectives."

"Monitor progress."

"Receive rewards."

Neon's eyes widened.

"So it's literally a game."

"Pretty much."

The commander admitted.

Several girls looked excited.

Others looked concerned.

Then another screen appeared.

Personnel Records.

The list contained names.

Personal Details.

Levels.

Ranks.

Specializations.

Achievements.

Medals.

"You can view GDI personnel."

The commander explained.

"Personal Details."

"You can see their levels."

"Achievements."

"Ranks."

Anis immediately pointed.

"Can we see your level?"

"No."

The answer came instantly.

The group groaned.

Yuuki pretended not to hear them.

Then another feature appeared.

Equipment Management.

The display showed weapons.

Armor.

Attachments.

Enhancements.

"If you meet the requirements."

The commander pointed toward the menu.

"You can unlock upgrades yourself."

Several girls looked interested.

"Such as?"

Maya asked.

The commander smiled.

"New rigging configurations."

The wolf's ears perked up.

"Improved weapons."

"Enhanced systems."

"Additional equipment slots."

The hologram expanded further.

Yorktown's eyes widened.

"So we don't have to wait for headquarters?"

"Not for basic upgrades."

Yuuki nodded.

"Advanced retrofits still require facilities."

The display shifted again.

Shipgirls.

Nikkes.

Special upgrade trees.

Yuu immediately became interested.

The doctor looked at the data.

"That would simplify development enormously."

"Exactly."

The commander nodded.

"Once you reach suitable levels."

He pointed toward Yorktown.

"I can begin implementing GDI retrofits."

Then toward Rapi.

"Nikke GDI combat improvements."

Then toward Kaguya.

"Special Arcane integrations once we find out more on magical artifacts."

The fox immediately became interested.

Then Yuuki paused.

A grin appeared.

"Oh."

The commander looked around.

"There's one more thing."

Several girls noticed the smile.

Which usually meant trouble.

Or something ridiculous.

"What?"

Anis asked cautiously.

The commander activated another display.

A cube appeared.

Then another.

Then another.

Then hundreds.

Storage Space.

Several girls blinked.

"Storage?"

Yuuki nodded.

"Every GDI member receives a personal inventory."

Silence.

Then more silence.

Then Neon raised a hand.

"You mean..."

The commander smiled.

"A pocket dimension."

The entire group froze.

"A what?"

"A personal dimensional storage space."

The hologram expanded.

Items disappeared into the inventory.

Then reappeared.

Weapons.

Food.

Equipment.

Supplies.

Books.

Tools.

Everything.

The girls stared.

Then stared harder.

Then stared even harder.

"It stores things?"

Choukai asked.

"Anything you want."

The commander nodded.

"Within capacity limits."

The display showed measurements.

Level 1.

1 cubic meter.

Level 10.

10 cubic meters.

Level 100.

100 cubic meters.

The numbers continued climbing.

Several girls immediately understood.

Then their eyes widened.

"Wait."

Yorktown pointed.

"The storage grows with levels?"

"Exactly."

The commander nodded.

"The higher your level."

"The larger your inventory."

Anis looked horrified.

"Commander."

"What?"

"You just gave everyone a reason to become loot goblins."

The commander considered that.

Then nodded.

"Fair."

The group laughed.

Then Yuuki continued.

"The inventory preserves stored items."

That immediately caught attention.

"What do you mean?"

Mary asked.

The commander pulled an apple from storage.

"Food remains exactly as it was when stored."

The apple looked freshly picked.

"Store it today."

"Retrieve it a week later."

"It remains unchanged."

The doctor blinked.

"Temporal suspension."

"Essentially."

Yuuki nodded.

Several girls immediately imagined the possibilities.

Food.

Medicine.

Emergency supplies.

Equipment.

The utility was incredible.

Then the commander added.

"However."

Everyone knew there was a catch.

"You cannot store living things."

The display flashed red.

"No animals."

"No people."

"No fairies."

Esche immediately looked relieved.

Then Yuuki pointed at the silver fairy.

"Because I know exactly what some of you would try."

The fairies looked away suspiciously.

Then Soda suddenly realized something.

The maid looked toward Yuu.

Then toward the storage display.

Then back toward Yuu.

A look of horror appeared.

"Wait."

The doctor looked over.

"Yes?"

Soda pointed.

"Doctor."

"Yes?"

"What level are you again?"

The doctor smiled.

"One thousand."

Silence.

Everyone slowly turned toward her.

Then toward the storage capacity chart.

Then back toward her.

Then back toward the chart.

Then back toward her again.

The realization hit all at once.

"YOU HAVE A THOUSAND CUBIC METERS OF STORAGE?!"

Neon nearly shouted.

The doctor blinked.

"Approximately."

The girls stared.

A thousand cubic meters.

That wasn't storage.

That was a warehouse.

Yuu looked genuinely confused by their reaction.

"Is that unusual?"

"YES."

Several voices answered simultaneously.

The doctor adjusted her glasses.

"Oh."

Then thought for a moment.

"That explains why Vergil said I carry too much equipment."

Yuuki laughed.

"How much stuff do you actually have in there?"

Yuu looked thoughtful.

"Research samples."

"Medical supplies."

"Laboratory equipment."

"Archived records."

"Spare armor components."

The doctor paused.

Then added casually.

"And an entire emergency field hospital."

Silence.

The girls stared.

Then stared harder.

Then slowly accepted that Kirino Yuu was exactly the kind of person who carried an entire hospital inside a pocket dimension just in case she might need it one day.

Which, somehow, made perfect sense.

==================

The setting sun was beginning to paint the village in shades of gold and orange.

Lanterns were already being lit.

Food stalls were opening.

Music drifted through the evening air.

The harvest festival was beginning.

For the first time in years.

The Tsukimimi were celebrating a successful harvest.

A celebration made possible because the village had finally been freed.

Yuuki looked toward the glowing village square.

Then toward his fleet.

Then toward the friends surrounding him.

Tomorrow they would prepare for war.

Tomorrow they would finalize plans against the Mother Whale.

Tomorrow they might gain the power to begin leveling for the first time.

But tonight wasn't about war.

Tonight wasn't about Sirens.

Tonight wasn't about Raptures.

Tonight belonged to the villagers.

To laughter.

To food.

To music.

To peace.

The commander smiled.

"For now, let's forget about levels."

Several girls immediately protested.

Which only made him laugh harder.

Then he pointed toward the brightly lit village square below.

"Come on."

The commander began walking toward the festival.

"Let's enjoy the harvest festival."

The Shipgirls and Nikkes quickly followed behind him.

Some talking excitedly about leveling.

Others discussing the Mother Whale.

Others simply happy to spend time together.

Above them, the first festival lanterns illuminated the evening sky.

And for one peaceful night before the coming battle, everyone allowed themselves to simply enjoy being together.

===================

By the time the discussion about levels, inventories, and nanomachines finally ended, the sun had already begun setting beyond the horizon.

Golden light painted the island in warm colors.

Lanterns illuminated the village streets.

Music drifted through the evening air.

The harvest festival had officially begun.

And unfortunately for Yuuki—

His fleet had absolutely no intention of allowing him to spend the evening working.

"Commander."

"Chief."

"Master."

"Shikikan-sama."

"Beloved."

The various titles came from every direction.

The commander immediately knew he was doomed.

Before he could even attempt an escape, Yorktown grabbed one arm.

Anis claimed the other.

Akagi appeared behind him.

Kaguya somehow appeared beside him despite not being there a second ago.

The commander sighed.

"I see democracy has failed."

"It was never a democracy."

Anis replied cheerfully.

"It was a unanimous decision."

The others nodded.

Yuuki looked toward Yuu.

The doctor immediately looked away.

She wasn't helping him.

Not this time.

Even she had changed out of her usual lab coat.

For once, the Head Doctor of the Global Defense Initiative looked less like a scientist and more like a woman enjoying a festival.

Her light-blue yukata matched her dark hair surprisingly well.

Several Tsukimimi villagers had already complimented her appearance.

The doctor had become mildly flustered every single time.

Nearby, Houshou wore a beautiful traditional yukata patterned with cranes and autumn flowers.

The carrier blended so naturally into the festival that several villagers had already mistaken her for a local noblewoman.

Choukai looked genuinely happy simply being surrounded by people again.

The younger cruiser eagerly explored every stall she could find.

Meanwhile Maya attempted to maintain a serious expression.

Attempted.

The wolf-eared cruiser was currently holding three skewers and a bag of sweets.

Her serious image had already suffered catastrophic damage.

Atago naturally noticed.

"Having fun, Maya-chan?"

"No."

The wolf immediately took another bite.

Atago laughed.

"Of course."

The Tsukimimi village had transformed completely.

Colorful lanterns stretched between buildings.

Wooden stalls lined the streets.

Children ran around carrying carved rabbit lanterns.

Families laughed together.

Musicians played traditional songs from a raised platform near the center square.

The smell of food filled the air.

Carrot cakes.

Carrot buns.

Carrot stew.

Carrot dumplings.

Carrot pastries.

Yuuki eventually realized the Tsukimimi really loved carrots.

A lot.

"Commander."

Neon pointed dramatically.

"They weaponized carrots."

The commander looked toward a stall.

There was indeed something resembling a carrot-shaped missile pastry.

"I stand corrected."

The villagers had worked miracles.

Despite only having a single day.

The festival felt alive.

Authentic.

Full of joy.

The former village chief had spent years hoarding resources.

Now those resources had been returned.

The food stores recovered.

The reservoir restored.

The fields flourishing once more.

For the first time in years, the villagers had something worth celebrating.

And they celebrated enthusiastically.

Kyon and Momo were practically running the entire event.

The two rabbit girls bounced between stalls.

Introducing villagers to the newcomers.

Showing off the fairies.

Helping distribute food.

And occasionally dragging unsuspecting Shipgirls into activities.

Poor Belfast was currently participating in a carrot-carving contest.

The maid accepted her fate with admirable dignity.

Meanwhile the Bulin sisters had discovered festival games.

This proved dangerous.

Extremely dangerous.

"Buli!"

The youngest won a giant stuffed rabbit.

"Buli!"

The second won two more.

"Buli!"

The third accidentally broke one of the strength-testing machines.

The villagers were surprisingly impressed.

Akashi immediately began calculating how profitable these festivals could become.

Yuuki confiscated her notebook before she could start drafting business contracts.

"Nyaa!"

The catgirl protested.

"Enjoy the festival."

The commander ordered.

Akashi pouted.

Then immediately found a food stall.

Problem solved.

The most surprising sight, however, was Yuu.

The doctor who normally spent every waking moment researching.

The woman who carried an entire hospital inside a dimensional inventory.

The Level 1000 genius.

She was simply sitting beneath a lantern.

Watching.

Listening.

Smiling.

Oberis and Esche sat upon her shoulders while Kyon excitedly explained various Tsukimimi traditions.

For once.

No experiments.

No research.

No reports.

Just enjoying the evening.

When Yuuki passed by, Yuu looked up.

The doctor smiled.

"A nice village."

"It is."

Yuuki agreed.

The doctor looked around.

The laughing villagers.

The reunited families.

The Shipgirls.

The Nikkes.

The children running through the streets.

Then her gaze shifted toward the growing GDI outpost visible in the distance.

The unfinished towers.

The shield generators.

The observation post.

Tomorrow.

The reality of war would return.

The Mother Whale.

The rescue mission.

The Sirens.

The Raptures.

The leveling system.

The future.

But tonight?

Tonight belonged to the people.

Yuu smiled.

"I think this is why we're fighting."

The commander looked around.

At the laughter.

At the smiles.

At the happiness.

Then nodded.

"Yeah."

A few moments later, Anis appeared from nowhere and dragged him away before he could become too philosophical.

"Commander!"

"What now?"

"Festival games."

"Anis."

"Festival games. You're going to win me something!"

The commander sighed.

The Nikke had already won.

Around them, lanterns illuminated the night sky while the people of Autumn Isle celebrated their first true harvest festival in years.

And for one peaceful evening before the coming battle, everyone simply allowed themselves to be happy.

Eventually, after being dragged from stall to stall, forced into games, persuaded into judging food competitions, and somehow becoming the honorary guest of half the village, Yuuki finally managed to slip away from the festivities.

The sounds of laughter and music gradually faded behind him.

Not completely.

Just enough.

Enough to appreciate them from afar.

He climbed a small hill overlooking the village.

From there, the entire festival could be seen.

Lanterns illuminated the streets like rivers of gold.

Children ran between stalls carrying glowing rabbit-shaped lanterns.

Shipgirls and Nikkes mingled with the Tsukimimi as though they had known each other for years.

For a moment, it felt less like a temporary refuge.

And more like home.

"Ah, Commander. You're here as well?"

Yuuki turned.

Yorktown stood a short distance away.

The carrier wore a pale blue yukata decorated with white flowers.

Her white hair swayed gently in the evening breeze.

The warm lantern light made her look almost ethereal.

"I could ask you the same thing."

Yorktown smiled softly.

"I was looking for a quiet place."

She stepped beside him.

Then looked down at the festival below.

The carrier laughed quietly.

"The villagers certainly know how to celebrate."

"They do."

Yuuki nodded.

"They had one day to prepare and somehow created an entire festival."

Yorktown's smile widened.

"You helped."

"I merely supplied resources."

The carrier gave him a look.

The kind of look that clearly said she wasn't fooled.

Then she noticed several large crates near the edge of the hill.

Her eyebrow rose.

"Fireworks?"

Yuuki grinned.

"Fireworks."

Yorktown laughed.

"You even gave them fireworks?"

"What is a festival without fireworks, Hana?"

The carrier covered her mouth as she laughed.

The sound was gentle.

Comfortable.

One he found himself enjoying more and more.

After a moment, she moved closer.

Then quietly sat beside him.

Neither spoke for a while.

They simply watched.

The music.

The dancing.

The laughter.

The celebration.

Below them, Anis was somehow trying to convince a group of villagers that a rocket launcher could be considered festival equipment.

Neon appeared to be helping.

Which made the situation significantly worse.

Yuuki sighed.

Yorktown laughed.

"It really is nice."

The carrier rested her head against his shoulder.

"To be peaceful for once."

The commander looked toward the village.

Then toward the distant ocean.

Beyond that ocean waited the Mother Whale.

Beyond that battle waited more rescue missions.

More dangers.

More responsibilities.

But for now...

"Yeah."

His voice softened.

"It is."

The evening breeze drifted across the hill.

The festival lanterns glowed warmly below.

Above them, the stars slowly emerged across the night sky.

The moon hung high overhead.

Bright and beautiful.

Yuuki found himself staring at it for a moment.

Then he smiled.

"The moon is really beautiful tonight."

Yorktown's expression immediately softened.

A faint blush appeared on her cheeks.

The carrier looked at him.

Not the moon.

Not the festival.

Just him.

The man who had fallen from the sky into her life.

The man who had saved her.

The man who somehow carried enough warmth to gather lost souls around him.

The man she loved.

Yorktown leaned forward.

Gently.

Slowly.

Their lips met in a brief, tender kiss.

Nothing hurried.

Nothing demanding.

Just a quiet expression of affection beneath the moonlight.

When she pulled back, her forehead rested lightly against his shoulder once more.

"Hana?"

Yuuki asked softly.

The carrier smiled.

A genuine smile.

The kind she rarely showed anyone else.

"It's rare for me to have you all to myself."

Her fingers found his hand.

Intertwining with his.

"Let me enjoy this moment with the man I love."

The commander looked at her.

Then at their joined hands.

Then back toward the festival below.

For all the chaos surrounding their lives, moments like this were surprisingly precious.

So instead of saying anything clever.

Instead of teasing her.

Instead of changing the subject.

He simply squeezed her hand gently.

And together they sat beneath the moonlight.

Watching the festival.

Listening to the distant laughter.

Enjoying one peaceful evening before the next battle awaited them.

Yorktown had barely settled comfortably within his embrace when another voice interrupted the quiet moment.

"Ah, there you are."

Yuuki already knew who it was before turning.

"Yuu."

The doctor approached with her hands behind her back, looking amused.

"Well, someone has a habit of disappearing whenever things become peaceful."

Then she noticed Yorktown sitting comfortably against him.

The carrier looked entirely unrepentant.

Yuu's eyebrow rose.

"More than alone, I see."

Yorktown smiled without the slightest embarrassment.

"For once."

The carrier leaned further back into Yuuki's chest.

"I get to have him to myself."

"You're quite possessive."

Yuu observed.

Yorktown simply laughed.

"Pff."

Her fingers intertwined with Yuuki's.

"You don't understand."

The carrier's gaze drifted toward the festival below.

"I can feel everyone's hearts."

Her voice remained warm.

Calm.

Without resentment.

Without insecurity.

"I know how much everyone loves him."

The carrier smiled.

"I don't envy it."

"I don't resent it."

"Nor am I jealous."

She squeezed Yuuki's hand.

"But having him all to myself?"

A mischievous smile appeared.

"That is a luxury."

Yuu found herself smiling.

It was difficult not to.

The connection Yuuki shared with the Shipgirls and Nikkes truly was unusual.

There was no competition.

No rivalry.

No bitterness.

Only understanding.

Then the doctor looked toward the commander.

"So."

Yuuki immediately knew where this was going.

"No."

"I haven't even asked yet."

"No."

Yuu laughed.

"Then you already know the answer."

The doctor sat beside him anyway.

Then calmly leaned against his other shoulder.

"Even you?"

Yuuki sighed.

"Yes."

Yuu adjusted her glasses.

"I already confessed my feelings."

The doctor sounded completely matter-of-fact.

"As far as I'm concerned, that grants me the right to sit next to you."

Yorktown laughed.

"Fair."

"Thank you."

Yuu replied.

The commander looked between them.

One woman comfortably nestled against his chest.

The other leaning against his shoulder.

Both completely at ease.

Neither seeing anything unusual about the arrangement.

"Please cut me some slack."

Yuuki groaned.

His complaint was ignored.

Entirely.

Yorktown simply nestled deeper into his embrace.

Meanwhile Yuu tightened her hold around his arm.

The commander stared at the night sky.

Neither woman showed any intention of moving.

Then a familiar voice echoed from below.

"Ah!"

A pause.

Then another voice echoed from the path leading up the hill.

"There he is."

Yuuki immediately froze.

The commander slowly closed his eyes.

"No."

Yorktown immediately started laughing.

Beside him, Yuu looked curious.

Then she saw the growing number of silhouettes climbing the hill.

"Oh."

The doctor understood immediately.

"You've been discovered."

"I noticed."

Yuuki sighed.

Moments later, the rest of the fleet arrived.

Enterprise was the first to reach the top.

The carrier folded her arms.

Then her eyes landed on Yorktown comfortably occupying Yuuki's embrace.

"There she is."

Enterprise pointed.

"No wonder she's missing."

Yorktown immediately looked away.

Whistling.

Poorly.

Very poorly.

San Diego appeared beside Enterprise.

The cruiser looked scandalized.

"No fair, Commander!"

Before Yuuki could defend himself, a blonde-haired destroyer launched herself through the air.

"Hug."

Eldridge attached herself to his back like a koala.

Direct hit.

The commander nearly lost his balance.

Then things became worse.

Much worse.

"Buli!"

"Buli!"

"Buli!"

The three Bulin sisters immediately joined Eldridge.

One latched onto his arm.

One claimed his shoulder.

One hugged his waist.

The commander was rapidly becoming a climbing frame.

Vestal sighed.

A long suffering sigh.

The sigh of a woman watching a completely preventable disaster unfold.

Belfast adjusted her yukata.

"Hana."

The maid smiled politely.

"This is quite unfair."

Yorktown looked entirely unrepentant.

"I have no idea what you're talking about."

Several girls simultaneously stared at her.

Illustrious giggled behind her sleeve.

"Perhaps we should take the Commander for ourselves next time."

The carrier's smile was sweet.

Far too sweet.

Unicorn hurried forward carrying a stuffed rabbit.

"Onii-chan!"

She happily held it up.

"I won a bunny for U-chan!"

Yuuki smiled immediately.

"Good job, Unicorn."

The little carrier's face lit up.

Wales folded her arms.

"Lady Yorktown certainly knows how to be sneaky."

Avrora nodded in agreement.

"She stole my beloved away for herself."

Yorktown laughed.

"I merely arrived first."

The explanation convinced nobody.

Absolutely nobody.

Kaguya eventually reached the hilltop.

The Arcane fox placed a hand dramatically against her chest.

"Oh my."

Her tails swayed.

"So this is where mine husband chose to hide himself."

Yuuki groaned.

"Kaguya."

"Tis merely an observation."

The fox replied innocently.

Akagi immediately pointed.

"Shikikan-sama!"

The fox looked deeply betrayed.

"Akagi wanted alone time as well."

Kaga nodded beside her.

"We all do."

The carrier's answer earned widespread agreement.

Atago placed her hands on her hips.

"Hana-chan!"

The heavy cruiser laughed.

"You are sneaky."

Takao immediately sighed.

"Atago-nee."

The elder sister already knew exactly where this conversation was heading.

Akashi appeared carrying festival snacks.

"Shikikan busted, nyaa."

The cat looked far too pleased about the situation.

Houshou watched the entire scene unfold.

Then smiled behind her sleeve.

"Oh my."

The carrier sounded genuinely amused.

Choukai blinked.

Then looked toward Yorktown.

Then Yuuki.

Then Yorktown again.

"Shikikan-sama is playing favorites."

Yorktown immediately objected.

"I am not."

The younger cruiser laughed.

Maya simply crossed her arms.

Then sighed.

The wolf had already accepted that resisting the commander's orbiting collection of women was impossible.

Anis looked toward Yorktown.

Then grinned.

"Mom."

Yorktown immediately sensed danger.

"You should've said you wanted alone time."

The carrier's smile froze.

Anis pointed dramatically.

"We would've helped if you include us."

Yorktown covered her face.

"Please don't."

Neon nodded enthusiastically.

"Caught red-handed."

Rapi folded her arms.

"Indeed."

The Nikke looked entirely unsurprised.

Ade covered her mouth politely.

"Oh my, Master."

Soda immediately joined in.

"No fair, Master."

Cocoa puffed her cheeks.

"Commander should share."

The maid looked genuinely offended.

Nearby, Nayuta observed everything quietly.

Then smiled.

"Ah."

The Pilgrim nodded.

"It appears the great hero knows when to run."

"Not very successfully."

Yuu commented.

The doctor had already noticed everyone found him anyway.

Mary eventually arrived carrying both fairies.

Esche sat upon one shoulder.

Oberis sat upon the other.

The nurse smiled.

"My."

Her eyes sparkled.

"The Commander certainly is popular."

Pepper nodded.

"It really is impressive."

Yuuki wasn't sure if that was praise or concern.

Laffey finally reached him.

The sleepy destroyer immediately leaned against his back.

"Commander nap."

That was apparently her entire contribution.

Javelin pointed accusingly.

"Commander!"

The destroyer pouted.

"I am your fiancée too!"

Several girls immediately agreed.

Nimi pinched the bridge of her nose.

"Our Kommandant sneaks away."

The destroyer sounded exhausted.

Eugen finally arrived.

The heavy cruiser looked toward Yorktown.

Then toward Yuuki.

Then toward Yorktown again.

A mischievous smile appeared.

"Naughty Teddy Bear."

The silver-haired cruiser slipped beside him.

"Leaving your fiancées behind."

Hipper immediately corrected her.

"It's not entitlement."

Then she paused.

"...But it is a little unfair."

The entire group stopped talking.

Then collectively stared.

At Yuuki.

At Yorktown.

At Yuu.

The commander immediately realized there would be no escape.

Yorktown suddenly found the fireworks below fascinating.

Yuu looked up toward the stars.

Both women refused to make eye contact.

Neither offered assistance.

Traitors.

The lot of them.

Then Anis broke first.

She laughed.

Neon joined.

Soon Enterprise was smiling.

Then Belfast.

Then Atago.

Then Houshou.

Before long the entire group was laughing.

Even Yuuki eventually gave up.

The commander looked around at the collection of Shipgirls, Nikkes, fairies, and friends crowding around him atop the hill.

Then he shook his head.

"I can't have one peaceful romantic moment, can I?"

"No."

The answer came instantly.

From everyone.

The synchronized response caused another wave of laughter.

Then the first firework exploded overhead.

Golden light illuminated the hill.

For a brief moment, everyone fell silent.

Watching the colors bloom across the night sky.

The village cheered below.

The lanterns glowed.

The festival continued.

And somehow, with Yorktown leaning against him, Yuu holding one arm, Eldridge on his back, Bulins attached everywhere else, and the rest of the fleet gathered around him—

Yuuki found himself smiling.

It wasn't the peaceful moment he originally wanted.

But looking at the people around him.

He wouldn't have traded it for anything.

Enterprise crossed her arms.

The carrier's expression immediately became a pout.

"Not fair, Hana."

Yorktown smiled.

"I have no idea what you're talking about."

"Liar."

Enterprise replied instantly.

Belfast sighed.

A deep sigh.

The sigh of a maid who had long since accepted her commander's fate.

"It seems that Hana appears to have secured a strategic advantage."

"I merely arrived first and he was here. I just took advantage of it."

Yorktown replied.

Akagi immediately pointed.

"Shikikan-sama!"

The fox practically appeared beside him.

"You should be spending your time with Akagi at all times."

Kaga rubbed her forehead.

"Please stop saying things like that."

"Nay."

Akagi replied proudly.

Then Kaguya appeared.

The Arcane fox placed a hand over her chest dramatically.

"Oh my."

Her tails swayed.

"Thy wife was left all alone below."

She pointed accusingly.

"And here thou art surrounded by other women."

"Kaguya."

Yuuki groaned.

The fox giggled.

Nearby, Houshou simply smiled behind her sleeve.

"Ara."

That single word somehow contained an entire conversation.

Even Yuuki wasn't sure how.

Then Anis finally snapped.

The Nikke pointed dramatically.

"We want the commander's attention too!"

Several voices immediately agreed.

"Indeed."

"That's fair."

"I agree."

"Commander."

"Master."

"Shikikan-sama."

Yuuki suddenly found himself surrounded.

Again.

Entirely surrounded.

Akagi claimed one side.

Atago sat beside him.

Eugen immediately occupied available space.

Laffey quietly climbed onto his lap and fell asleep.

Nimi looked exasperated.

Then sat nearby anyway.

Rapi shook her head.

Then joined the group.

One by one.

Shipgirls.

Nikkes.

Everyone settled around him.

No arguments.

No disputes.

No competition.

Simply wanting to spend time together.

The commander looked around.

Then sighed.

His peaceful private moment had lasted approximately seven minutes.

A new personal record.

Then the first firework launched.

A bright streak crossed the sky.

A moment later—

BOOM.

Golden light exploded overhead.

The entire festival below cheered.

More fireworks followed.

Red.

Blue.

Gold.

Silver.

The night sky bloomed with colors.

Children pointed excitedly.

Villagers laughed.

Music continued beneath the explosions.

The harvest festival reached its climax.

For a while, nobody spoke.

They simply watched.

The fireworks.

The village.

The stars.

The people they had saved.

The future they were building together.

Yorktown rested comfortably against him.

Yuu remained at his side.

Akagi leaned nearby.

Kaguya smiled softly.

Houshou watched the display like a proud mother.

The Nikkes laughed whenever particularly large fireworks exploded.

And for a brief moment, surrounded by friends, comrades, family, and people who genuinely cared about him, Yuuki realized something.

Tomorrow would bring another battle.

Another rescue mission.

Another impossible challenge.

But tonight—

Tonight was enough.

The fireworks continued illuminating the sky above Autumn Isle while the people beneath them celebrated a future that finally seemed worth believing in.
