Chapter 48 - CHAPTER 48: THE BOY IN THE WRONG MEMORY

Nothing felt stable anymore.

Not the system.

Not the people.

Not even Kelvin's own thoughts.

Kelvin

Kelvin didn't sleep that night.

Every time he closed his eyes, he saw fragments.

Not dreams.

Not memories.

Something in between.

A hallway.

A voice.

A second version of himself standing where he should not exist.

"…Kael," he whispered again.

But this time, it didn't feel like a name.

It felt like a trigger.

System response

His phone lit up on the desk beside him:

MEMORY SPLIT PROGRESSION: 18%

Kelvin sat up immediately.

"…Stop doing that," he muttered.

But the system didn't respond to emotion.

Only structure.

Nancy arrives

A knock at the door.

Nancy entered without waiting.

She looked serious—more than usual.

"…You're getting worse," she said.

Kelvin frowned.

"What do you mean 'worse'?"

Nancy didn't sit.

She just observed him.

"…You're starting to overwrite your own continuity."

Kelvin confusion

"…I don't understand that."

Nancy stepped closer.

"Then answer me this."

A pause.

"…what did you do yesterday?"

Kelvin hesitated.

"…I was here. With you. And Aisha—"

He stopped.

His voice broke slightly.

"…Aisha."

System reaction spike

REFERENCE ENTITY NOT FOUND: AISHA

Kelvin froze.

"…What?"

Nancy's expression tightened.

"…Say it again."

Kelvin swallowed.

"Aisha."

The phone flickered harder.

NAME CONFLICT DETECTED

Laura enters

Laura appeared in the doorway.

Calm.

Too calm.

She looked at Kelvin immediately.

"…You're slipping," she said.

Kelvin turned sharply.

"I'm not slipping."

Laura tilted her head slightly.

"…Then why does your memory disagree with your system?"

First deep memory break

Kelvin suddenly paused.

His eyes unfocused.

The room blurred.

Not physically—

but mentally.

Flash fragment (Kael memory intensifies)

A different room.

Dim lighting.

Two boys sitting side by side.

One of them spoke:

"If you start remembering me more than yourself… then the system is already inside you."

Kelvin flinched.

"…No…"

The vision broke.

He stumbled backward.

Nancy caught him.

Nancy realization

"…It's accelerating," she said quietly.

Laura nodded.

"…Kael is becoming active."

Kelvin looked up.

"…Stop saying that name like it's real."

Silence.

Then Nancy said:

"…It is real."

System escalation

Kelvin's phone vibrated violently:

SECOND IDENTITY EMERGENCE: 31%

Kelvin backed away from it.

"…What does that mean?"

Nancy finally answered fully.

"It means your original identity is trying to overwrite your current one."

Kelvin panic

"…That's impossible."

Laura stepped closer.

"…Not in your system."

A pause.

"…You were never meant to stay singular."

Reality distortion

The lights in the room flickered once.

Not system-wide.

Just around Kelvin.

For half a second—

he saw himself standing outside his own body.

But beside him…

was someone else.

Same face.

Different presence.

Kael presence strengthens

A voice—not from the phone—whispered:

"You're remembering wrong."

Kelvin froze.

"…Who said that?"

Nancy and Laura looked at him.

Neither of them heard it.

Final moment

Kelvin held his head.

His breathing uneven.

"…I don't trust my memories anymore."

Nancy didn't deny it.

Laura didn't comfort him.

Because the system confirmed it:

MEMORY AUTHORITY SPLIT DETECTED

KELVIN / KAEL OVERLAP IN PROGRESS

Kelvin whispered:

"…So which one am I?"

No one answered.

Because even the system was still deciding.
