Darius's glare cut across the hall like a blade, and Elowen answered it with a smile that was too calm to be innocent. The tension between them thickened at once, drawing every noble's attention back into the center of the chamber.
"You have ulterior motives," Darius said coldly. "Everyone knows you wouldn't support him unless you expected something in return." His eyes shifted at the end of the sentence and landed on me, as if I were suddenly part of the accusation instead of merely the one trying to survive it.
Yeah, he does have ulterior motives.
Elowen gave a soft, mocking laugh and leaned back with deliberate ease. "Need something from him?" he repeated. "And what, exactly, do you think I could possibly need from him?"
A lot of things.
