The announcement which spread across the university in less than an hour. The Annual Music Showcase. The biggest event of the semester. Every student in the School of Music wanted to participate. Every lecturer encouraged it. Every classroom talked about it. But there was one person who remained unusually quiet.
Jarnell.
He stood in front of the notice board with his hands in his pockets while reading every line carefully.
Prize, recognition, guest judges, Industry professionals, families invited, everything about it felt... too big.
Jayden walked up beside him.
You've been staring at that poster for five minutes. Jarnell didn't look away.
...I was thinking. Dangerous. A small smile escaped Jarnell. You always say that. Because it's always true. Soon, Jonas, Calvin, Alvin and Brian arrived.
Brian folded his arms dramatically.
So... Jarnell sighed.
... What now?.
We haven't even spoken.
I know that look. Alvin laughed.
We all do. Jonas pointed at the poster.
You're entering. Jarnell shook his head.
No.
Calvin raised an eyebrow. Why?
...Because I don't want to stand there alone.
The group went quiet. Jayden looked at him.
Not in a teasing way. He was just listening.
After a long silence, Jarnell finally spoke again.
...I'll join. Everyone smiled immediately.
...On one condition. Brian grinned.
Here it comes.bJarnell looked directly at Jayden.
....You perform with me, pointing at hiself.
Silence.
Complete silence. Jayden blinked.
...Me? You.
But I'm not a music major. I know. I'll embarrass you. You won't. You've never even heard me sing properly.
I don't care. Jayden stared at him for several seconds.
..Are you asking me because you're nervous?
Jarnell looked away_ Maybe. Or because I want the person who gave me courage to be standing beside me. Jayden smiled.
The softest smile Jarnell had ever seen.
Th...Then I'll do it.
Brian jumped onto a nearby bench.
HE SAID YES!
Students turned to look. Brian didn't care.
Weeks of Practice
From that day on, campus changed. Every afternoon, the music room echoed with piano melodies. Jarnell patiently corrected Jayden's timing, Jayden made Jarnell laugh whenever rehearsals became too serious.
Calvin and Alvin became unofficial judges.
Brian quietly took notes and offered suggestions. Jonas still disappeared every Friday afternoon. Nobody asked anymore.
They all knew he was sneaking off to see the girl he'd quietly loved for months. Whenever he returned, he wore the same silly smile.
And everyone pretended not to notice.
Meanwhile, Calvin and Brian had finally stopped hiding. They weren't dramatic about it. Just quietly holding hands when they thought no one was looking. Of course...
Everyone was looking. Jonas simply smiled every time he caught them.
The Night of the Showcase, the university auditorium was completely full.
Students, lecturers, guests, families, excitement filled every corner.
Backstage, Jarnell stood in complete silence. His hands were cold, his breathing uneven, Jayden noticed immediately. Without saying a word, he reached over and gently squeezed Jarnell's hand. You don't have to prove anything tonight. Jarnell looked at him. You already changed someone's life.
...Mine. For a moment, Jarnell couldn't answer. Then the announcer called their names. The lights dimmed as curtain slowly opened. The applause began. Jarnell walked to the piano and Jayden stood beside him.
Neither of them was afraid. The first notes filled the auditorium. Soft, beautiful. Every emotion Jarnell had spent years hiding poured into the music. Loneliness, hope, fear, love, and finally— Peace.
When the final note faded... The room remained silent. Just for one heartbeat.
Then the entire auditorium stood. Thunderous applause echoed through the hall. Some students cried. Lecturers smiled proudly. Even the judges were on their feet.
Jarnell searched the audience. His eyes found his parents. For once... Neither of them was looking at a phone. Neither was distracted. They were clapping. Both smiling and Proud.
His mother wiped away a tear. His father nodded proudly. It was all Jarnell had secretly wished for as a child.
The host handed Jarnell the microphone.
He hadn't planned to speak. But somehow...
his heart told him to. He looked at the audience, his friends, and then Jayden. His voice was steady.
When I first came to university... I thought I already knew who I was. He smiled softly.
I was wrong. I met people who refused to leave my side. He looked toward Jonas, Calvin, Alvin, Brian. You laughed with me.
You annoyed me. You believed in me long before I believed in myself. The audience laughed gently. Then Jarnell turned toward Jayden. His eyes softened. And then...
I met someone who never tried to change me. He simply stayed beside me. Until I found the courage to change myself. Jayden's eyes were already shining.
Jarnell smiled. I love you, Jayden. A soft gasp spread through the auditorium. You helped me become the version of myself I was always afraid to be. You showed me that being loved doesn't make someone weak.
It gives them the courage to grow. Jayden walked onto the stage and hugged him tightly as the audience applauded once more. Jarnell laughed quietly against his shoulder. Then looked back at the crowd.
I hope everyone here finds someone who makes them feel seen. Someone who walks beside you instead of ahead of you. And when you find that person... Hold on to them.
After the ceremony, everyone gathered outside the auditorium. Jayden's lively family. Jarnell's parents, smiling more than anyone had ever seen.
Jonas, who had finally introduced the girl he had been secretly dating all this time and their other friends.
Children running around. Jayden's little sister stood on a bench. Everyone closer!
No gaps!. Jarnell, stand next to my brother!
As if he was going to stand anywhere else, Brian laughed. Everyone burst into laughter.
The photographer raised the camera.
"Ready?"
Jayden quietly reached for Jarnell's hand.
Their fingers intertwined. Jarnell squeezed gently, then smiled. The kind that reached his eyes.
Three....Two....One.....click.
The photograph captured more than smiling faces. It captured friendship, Family, forgiveness, dreams fulfilled and two boys...
Who had started as strangers...
But found a home in each other.
