Chapter 39 - The unwanted guest

Morning sunlight slowly entered the hospital room.

Everything felt peaceful.

Too peaceful.

After the nightmare of the previous night—

The quiet almost felt strange.

Lia Thompson slowly opened her eyes.

Her head still hurt.

Her body still felt weak.

But somehow—

She wasn't afraid anymore.

Because she wasn't alone.

Lia blinked sleepily.

Then froze.

Ryan Blake.

Still there.

His head rested beside her bed.

One arm folded beneath his head.

His other hand—

Still holding hers.

Asleep.

Lia stared.

He hadn't left.

Not even once.

Slowly—

Very slowly—

A small smile appeared on her face.

His hair was messy.

His hoodie was wrinkled.

He looked exhausted.

And honestly?

Terrible.

But somehow—

He had never looked more beautiful to her.

Lia squeezed his hand softly.

Ryan's eyes immediately opened.

The moment he saw her awake—

He sat up so quickly he nearly fell out of the chair.

"Lia?!"

His sleepy voice made her laugh softly.

A tiny laugh.

But to Ryan—

It sounded like heaven.

"Good."

He breathed.

"You're okay."

Lia smiled weakly.

"You look horrible."

Ryan blinked.

Then gasped dramatically.

"Good morning to you too."

Lia laughed again.

And Ryan froze.

Because he hadn't heard that sound in what felt like forever.

He smiled.

"There she is."

"The rude patient."

Lia smiled.

"The bossy boyfriend."

Ryan froze.

Boyfriend.

She called him boyfriend.

And somehow—

His ears immediately turned red.

Lia blinked.

Then realized what she'd said.

Her eyes widened.

"I-I mean—"

Ryan immediately sat straighter.

"No no no."

"We are not correcting perfection."

Lia covered her face.

"Ryan!"

Ryan grinned.

"Nope."

"Too late."

"I'm keeping it forever."

Lia groaned in embarrassment.

And for the first time since waking up—

She felt normal.

Until—

She noticed another figure sleeping nearby.

"Ethan?"

Ryan looked over.

Ethan Carter.

Still sitting in the chair.

Arms crossed.

Head tilted.

Completely asleep.

Lia blinked.

"He stayed too?"

Ryan's smile softened.

"Yeah."

"He wouldn't leave."

Almost as if hearing them—

Ethan slowly opened his eyes.

And immediately sat upright.

"Lia?"

His voice carried so much relief.

He stood up quickly.

"You're awake."

Lia smiled softly.

"I'm awake."

For a moment—

The three of them simply looked at each other.

No jealousy.

No rivalry.

No anger.

Just relief.

And suddenly—

The door burst open.

Ava rushed inside carrying three bags.

Then she froze.

And tears immediately filled her eyes.

"LIA!"

Ryan and Ethan jumped.

Ava practically threw the bags onto the floor.

"Lia Thompson!"

"You nearly killed me!"

Lia blinked.

"What?"

Ava burst into tears.

Then immediately hugged her carefully.

"I hate you!"

"I hate you so much!"

Lia started laughing.

"Ava—"

"No!"

Ava pointed dramatically.

"No talking!"

"You scared me!"

"You scared Ryan!"

"You scared Basketball Boy Number One!"

she pointed at Ethan.

"And you scared Basketball Boy Number Two!"

she pointed at Ryan.

Ryan looked offended.

"Excuse me."

"I'm clearly Number One."

Ethan looked equally offended.

"Says who?"

"Says me."

Ryan replied proudly.

And somehow—

Watching the two boys argue over something so stupid—

Lia started laughing.

Really laughing.

Tears formed in her eyes from laughing too much.

And everyone froze.

Because after everything—

After all the fear.

After all the pain.

After almost losing her—

Hearing Lia Thompson laugh again—

Was the most beautiful sound in the world.

But outside the hospital room—

Someone stood silently.

Watching.

Watching the happiness inside.

Watching Lia laugh.

Watching Ryan smile.

Watching Ethan relax.

Madison Reed.

And the guilt in her eyes had never been heavier.

The laughter inside the hospital room slowly faded.

Ava had finally stopped crying.

Ryan and Ethan had finally stopped arguing over who was Basketball Boy Number One.

And Lia—

Lia was smiling again.

Then—

A soft knock came from the door.

Everyone looked up.

And froze.

Madison Reed stood outside.

Holding flowers.

Looking nervous.

Very nervous.

Ava blinked.

Ethan blinked.

Ryan blinked.

Lia blinked.

Nobody expected her.

Least of all Madison herself.

"...Can I come in?"

Silence.

Heavy silence.

Then Lia nodded.

"Okay."

Madison walked in quietly.

Not proudly.

Not confidently.

Not like the Madison everyone knew.

She looked...

Ashamed.

"I heard what happened."

She whispered.

"And I..."

Her voice broke.

"...I'm sorry."

Nobody spoke.

Because honestly—

Nobody knew what to say.

Madison placed the flowers down.

Then looked directly at Lia.

"I know you probably hate me."

"I know I hurt you."

"And I know I've done terrible things."

Tears filled her eyes.

"But I never wanted this."

Lia stared quietly.

And somehow—

She believed her.

Because Madison looked broken.

Not jealous.

Not angry.

Broken.

"I should go."

Madison whispered.

She turned—

But Ryan suddenly stood up.

"Wait."

Madison froze.

Ryan looked at Ethan.

Then at Madison.

"Outside."

Ethan immediately understood.

"Ryan?"

Lia asked.

"I'll be back."

He smiled softly.

And together—

Ryan.

Ethan.

And Madison.

Left the room.

Outside.

In the empty hallway.

Madison looked around nervously.

"I wasn't going to say anything."

She whispered.

"But after seeing her..."

"I can't stay quiet anymore."

Ryan frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

Madison swallowed.

"Three nights ago..."

"My parents attended an evening gala."

Ethan's expression changed.

"A business gala?"

Madison nodded.

"And your parents were there too."

She looked at Ryan.

"I wasn't paying attention."

"But I heard your father arguing with someone."

Ryan froze.

"What?"

Madison's hands trembled.

"I didn't understand everything."

"But I heard him say..."

"If the girl disappears, Ryan will finally listen."

Silence.

Ethan's eyes widened.

Ryan went completely still.

Madison looked horrified.

"I thought I misunderstood."

"I thought he was talking about business."

"But after what happened to Lia..."

She started crying.

"...I'm scared I didn't."

And for the first time in his life—

Ryan Blake felt afraid of his own family.
